A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 41

Chapter 41: A Seductive Gentleman – Part 3

The empress was a bit startled before following that up with a smile, “Ok, the more people in my palace, the more excitement.”

Zhao XiaoLan spiritedly greeted her. Ming ChangYan had been mixed in with the harem for a while so he knew when a concubine met with the empress, you must be polite to each jiejie and meimei. He cupped his hands together, “Hello Empress-jiejie, hello!”

Ming ChangYan’s eyes were currently fixated on the dishes that were on the empress’s table, his stomach suddenly feeling a sharp pain from the hunger.

The Aunt coughed, Zhao XiaoLan rubbed his nose and whispered, reminding him, “Yan-jiejie, when you’re paying respects to Auntie, you have to kneel down.”

Ming ChangYan’s eyes were still focused on the food and wasn’t really aware of what was going on.

Zhao XiaoLan tugged at the corner of Ming ChangYan’s robes, repeating, “Yan-jiejie, you can’t be rude.”

Ming ChangYan’s heart was concerned for that meal, not daring to act rash. After thinking it through, he came to a conclusion: The empress is like the mother of this land! I’ll just regard her as my half mother, it’s not like kneeling for her is some serious business.

He was just about to kneel down when as he bent his waist, the picture book rolled out from his chest.

With a plop, it landed on the ground and the wind blew a few of the pages open. The book was wide open, with the page opened for everyone to see precisely the one where Huai Yu was semi-clothed and looking indecent.

This book, landed directly beside Huai Yu’s feet.

Ming ChangYan thought: I’m dead!

He was flustered as he went to pick up the picture book, but he exerted himself too much and the steamed bun that was in his chest rolled on to the floor. Ming ChangYan thought ‘a sin, a sin’, picking up the picture book along with the steamed bun without panicking.

Stuffing it back into his chest, Ming ChangYan pressed his chest a bit until it looked relatively normal, raising his head he noted, “Eh? Why’s everyone looking at me?”

Zhao XiaoLan was the first to speak, “Yan-jiejie, why do you keep a steamed bun on you?”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “Ah, I’m a bit hungry, it’s not important, it’s not important.” He quickly bowed again, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Empress-jiejie, please be generous and not lower yourself to argue with someone like me.”

The empress had never met such a marveling ‘girl,’ she was a bit distracted until she gently said, “No matter. Is your life in the palace not going well or is the kitchen not giving you your meals? You can tell this empress if you’re being wronged and this empress will take responsibility.”

She paused for a bit before continuing, “From what XiaoLan said, you’re the Listening Lotus Building’s Yan-shaoshi?”

Ming ChangYan grinned, “Yes, that’s me.”

Aunt LingZhi said, “Yan-shaoshi the beautiful woman that’s ‘damaging the country and causing suffering to people?’”

Ming ChangYan modestly waved his hand, “I dare not, I dare not!”

Aunt LingZhi laughed, “The news of the Young Prime Minister going to DaMing Palace Hall and taking away your tablet is already well-known by everyone. How could shaoshi say she doesn’t dare?”

Ming ChangYan pondered for a bit before thinking: Why does it seem like this old hag’s words have a layer of sarcasm over it?

When the empress heard this, she said, “That’s quite interesting, I’ll have to take a closer look at you. But let’s not delay any longer, you’re already hungry so there’s no need to continue the polite talk. LingZhi, bring her a chair.”

Ming ChangYan already sat down when he realized that Huai Yu was sitting right beside him.

He promptly said, “Long time no see!”

It had already been several days since the events of GuangLing.

Huai Yu indifferently glanced at him, but Ming ChangYan was least afraid of the other not talking to him. When the food was served, he moved first, picking up a chopstick of food and placing it into Huai Yu’s bowl.

The empress froze.

Ming ChangYan wasn’t conscious of his actions at all, asking, “Why aren’t you eating?”

Huai Yu glanced at him again but Ming ChangYan was flexible at thinking, looking around, several of the palace maids who were spreading out the dishes looked at each other in dismay.

He laughed out loud, “My apologies, I forgot that the palace is a bit particular about eating.”

Saying this, Ming ChangYan once again picked up his chopsticks and extended them into Huai Yu’s bowl, wanting to take back the piece of meat that he gave him just now to eat by himself.

This action once again shocked everyone to hold their breath as they watched with rapt attention.

Huai Yu moved his chopsticks, holding him down, “What are you doing?”

Ming ChangYan was surprised, “If you don’t want to eat it, it’s only natural that you don’t waste food, I’ll eat it for you.”

Huai Yu didn’t say anything else, pushing away Ming ChangYan’s chopsticks, he brought the piece of meat in his bowl into his mouth.

Ming ChangYan smiled, “If you wanted to eat it, then say so. What’s the point of giving me attitude, is it fun?”

After Huai Yu ate the piece of meat, he set down his chopsticks and stopped moving.

The empress asked, “Is the food not to the Young Prime Minister’s liking?”

Huai Yu didn’t reply nor did he move his chopsticks. Ming ChangYan kept eating, thinking: Whoa, the face of this little brat truly is boundless, it’s fine if he gives me some attitude sometimes, but to not give the empress any face!

The empress continued, “If it’s not to your liking, then this empress will have the kitchen make them again. LingZhi, withdraw all the dishes for me.”

Ming ChangYan was still chewing the food in his mouth. A few of the dishes were indeed to his tastes, but he hadn’t even taken a few bites yet when the empress decided to withdraw them. His heart tensed, his eyes firmly gazed at the dishes in front of him when he thought: I’ve been enlightened. Huai Yu this fussy person is already so rude and unreasonable that he’s taken up a laissez-faire attitude to the empress! It’s seriously too scary.

Zhao XiaoLan quickly said, “I think that it’s quite delicious!”

When Ming ChangYan saw that someone was about to talk, he picked up his bowl and quickly gathered some more dishes into it. Originally, he was about to dissuade the empress too but thought that he’d might as well just grab some more dishes into his bowl. Every bite counts. He was in a frenzy, his hand was almost unable to support his bowl when Huai Yu said, “No need to change, it’s to my liking.”

The empress stated, “Then you should eat more if it’s to your liking. The Young Prime Minister didn’t worry any less about the affairs of the previous dynasty’s harem, this empress ought to thank you on behalf of the common people.”

The maids spread out the dishes. Huai Yu stared at his bowl and used his chopstick to stir the food a bit, but didn’t look as if he planned on eating it.

Ming ChangYan knew that he was extremely picky around food and had become squeamish around it. He chuckled before saying, “Ai, Huai Yu, you don’t want to eat this, you don’t want to eat that, be careful, you might not be able to grow tall.”

Huai Yu replied, “In any case, I’m still taller than you.”

Ming ChangYan went on, “If you don’t want to eat it then don’t waste it. Give it to me to eat.”

Huai Yu, “Don’t you have some in your own bowl?”

Ming ChangYan grinned, “What? I think that the dishes in your bowl look a bit tastier so I wanted to take a bite, anything wrong?”

Huai Yu said, “No, this is mine.”

Ming ChangYan said, “You don’t want me to eat it? Then I’m going to eat it!”

In between his words, he picked up the chopsticks with his right hand and adopted the attitude of going in to taste the food in Huai Yu’s bowl. Huai Yu held his chopsticks in his left hand and moved faster than him, engulfing all the food in his bowl in just two to three bites. His right cheek slightly bulged as he began to chew very slowly, letting out a cold humph.

The maid was horrified. Looking at Huai Yu’s empty bowl, she didn’t know whether she should add more dishes or not. Ming ChangYan suddenly smiled at her and mouthed the words ‘add dishes’ towards her. The maid didn’t hesitate, spreading more dishes into Huai Yu’s bowl.

It was like Ming ChangYan was addicted to grabbing the other’s dishes. Every time the maid placed a dish, Ming ChangYan would pretend to want a taste of it, causing Huai Yu to get vexed. The only solution was to finish eating it first. After going back and forth several times, Huai Yu’s stomach was full and immediately realized that he was played by Ming ChangYan.

Ming ChangYan wore a smile as he held his bowl, saying, “Wouldn’t it have been better if you just ate it in the beginning? To have to coax you into it, what kind of little missy attitude is this?”

Huai Yu pursed his lips and stared at him.

Ming ChangYan was frightened, “What are you doing, looking like you’re about to hit me? You’re not allowed to take advantage of someone’s current position! Wait till I get my cultivation back, then we’ll fight, I’m not able to defeat you at this moment. Oh right, you’re also not allowed to flip the table over, I’m not done eating!”

Huai Yu gazed at him for a while longer but he didn’t flip the table over, merely standing up and taking his leave.

Ming ChangYan muttered: Here it comes, here it comes, here we go again. Ai, this shaoxia has a headache.

With Huai Yu gone, Ming ChangYan could finally eat without a distraction. Without saying anything, he refilled his bowl three to four more times. Putting his diligent and thrifty habit to practice, he swept the dishes clean, afraid of wasting even a crumb of food. He finally drank a bowl of soup and laid down his bowl. Everyone in the room had already stopped moving their chopsticks, all gazing at him with a dumbstruck expression.

Zhao XiaoLan’s words were straightforward and unrestrained, ruefully saying, “Yan-jiejie, you, you eat a lot!”

Ming ChangYan relied, “Don’t waste food, plus, to be able to eat is a blessing. You should eat a bit more too, the more you eat the taller you’ll grow.”

Aunt LingZhi withdrew the food, the empress sized up Ming ChangYan like he was novelty.

After Ming ChangYan finished eating, he didn’t have anything else to say the empress, thinking that he might’ve teased Huai Yu a bit too much. The other party was fuming as they ran away, thinking of a way to coax the person back, he didn’t stay any longer, immediately taking his leave.

Standing up, the empress said, “Shaoshi stay.”

Ming ChangYan stopped as the empress smiled, “You look a lot like one of my old friends.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Oh, I’m honored! I’m honored!”

The empress asked, “When did you meet the Young Prime Minister?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Naturally I met him at the palace! The Young Prime Minister this person, even though he has a terrible temper, he’s still a good person. He just has the personality of a child, you shouldn’t lower yourself to argue with him, haha.” He paused for a bit then rubbed his nose, saying, “Empress-jiejie, I’ve still got some stuff to do, so I won’t bother you any longer.”

Zhao XiaoLan wiped his mouth and caught up to him at once, “Yan-jiejie, I’ll come with you!”

The empress laughed softly, “LingZhi, go bring out the bracelets in my third drawer.”

LingZhi glanced at the empress before turning around and heading inside the room. After a short period of time, she came out holding two bracelets. The workmanship was exquisite, the design complicated, clearly something very precious.

The empress said, “Reward these two braclets to Yan-shaoshi.”

Within the harem, the empress loved to reward concubines things. But even if Ming ChangYan took these two bracelets, he had no use for them. He stored them in his bosom, bid goodbye to the empress, and walked in the direction of the Ninety-Ninth Temple.

Zhao XiaoLan pulled at his sleeves, “Yan-jiejie, you’re going the wrong direction!”

Ming ChangYan said, “Not wrong, not wrong, I’m going to look for Huai Yu.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Look for Huai Yu-gege? He isn’t free these days, the blessing ceremony is about to begin, everyone inside and outside the capital are preparing. If it wasn’t Auntie who called him over, who else would’ve been able to ask Huai Yu-gege to leave his duties?”

Ming ChangYan let out an ‘Aiya’, his expression melancholic, thinking: If I’m unable to see him, then who’s going to come to restore my cultivation? Seriously, the more meddlesome, the more anxiety I feel.

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Yan-jiejie, do you have some sort of urgent matter to find Huai Yu-gege for?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Urgent, extremely urgent!”

Zhao XiaoLan, “No matter what kind or urgent matter, you’re going to have to wait till after the New Year.”

Ming ChangYan stopped his footsteps, “New year…New Year, that’s fine. That’s fine too, I haven’t celebrated the New Year in a long time.”

Zhao XiaoLan instantly made an appointment, “Every year, a few days before the Lantern Festival, the capital has heavy amounts of snowfall, so let’s all go cut some paper decorations*! I know someone who’s really good at paper cutting, let’s go go go!”

(TN: “窗花”; During festivities, people will commonly use red paper and cut it up into various designs to use as decoration. http://img95.699pic.com/photo/50113/0628.jpg_wh300.jpg )

Ming ChangYan was pushed forward by him while walking he asked, “What paper decorations?”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Something that A-Jun and the others play with, I don’t know how to cut them, but every year I still play with them!”

As expected, leading up to the eve of the festival, Ming ChangYan didn’t see Huai Yu once.

He was plagued by Zhao XiaoLan’s speeches about ‘The Noble Gentleman Ming ChangYan’s’ impressive events in the past, to the point where he almost couldn’t bear it any longer. On this day, just as he said, heavy snowfall fell on the capital. Ming ChangYan was physically weak and wished he would’ve just died on the bed, but at the crack of dawn, A-Jun joined Zhao XiaoLan and dug him out from his quilt.

Ming ChangYan was extremely unwilling, but he couldn’t resist the children’s aegyo. So with their pestering, his bad temper died out and he willingly went to have a snowball fight with them unafraid of what others might think.

He originally wanted to head straight out the door but was dragged back inside by Fu Ling who told him that his manners were improper. Ming ChangYan was pushed in front of the dressing table, uninterested as the two fiddled with him. As Fu Ling put on earrings for him, she asked, “Shaoshi, I’ve wanted to ask you this for a long time, how come you have two peircings on your ears?”

Ming ChangYan casually replied, “Oh, it’s a tradition in my hometown.”

In Tokhara, it didn’t matter if you were male or female, everyone wore earrings. When Ming ChangYan was younger, he had a few earrings that were identical to Yi Yue’s. The monarch created them using peacock feathers, precious gems, and colored glass. It was made with extremely delicate artistry, under the moonlight they would be overflowing with vibrant colors.

When Fu Ling was about to apply lipstick on him, Ming ChangYan pushed her hand away, “That won’t be necessary.”

A-Jun arrived wearing a cloak from who knows where but it was detailed and cute. When she wore it, she looked like a fairy that descended from the world of immortals. The moment Ming ChangYan stepped outside, A-Jun proceeded to shout, “Faster! It’s going to snow soon!”

He said, “You know it’s about to snow and yet you still call me outside, abominable!”

A-Jun replied, “If you continue to dilly-dally, I’m going to make Duan Duan hit you unconscious and drag you there!”

Ming ChangYan said, “Coming.”

He internally muttered: This woman’s mannerism could almost battle against Huai Yu that brat!

After A-Jun finished playing with the snow, her hands froze to blush a deep red. Ming ChangYan forbade her from rolling in the snow any longer, suggesting that they go look at the plum blossoms. When Zhao XiaoLan heard this, his eyes glimmered, saying ‘That’s what I’ve been waiting for’ multiple times.

Ming ChangYan wasn’t even a bit interested in viewing the plum blossoms. But Zhao XiaoLan loved flowers and were fond of them, the moment they arrived at the plum blossoms, he gave an expression of happiness. Plum blossom leaves scattering to the ground in midwinter had a distinctive feeling to it. A-Jun played around for a bit longer until she couldn’t stand the bitter cold and shrunk back into Duan Min’s embrace. She used him like he was a large heater, hanging on him and refusing to come down.

Zhao XiaoLan wore a cape and curled himself into a pile of furry clothes. Because he wore too much, even bending down seemed to be a challenging task. One was bending down to pick up the flower petals as the other hand was hugging his stomach. In his bosom, there were multiple flowers that had fallen off the plum tree. He didn’t pick them for a long time when they met the 13 Guardians on patrol.

Zhao XiaoLan called out, “Baili!”

Baili Deng stopped his footsteps and cupped his hands in greeting, “Young Master XiaoLan, Princess, Shaoshi.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “You guys have to patrol today? Isn’t Uncle emperor on vacation?”

Baili said, “He’s going on vacation in a few days, the blessings ceremony is near at hand. It’s bound to be a little busy.”

Ming ChangYan asked, “That something blessing, where do you go to pray for blessings?”

Baili answered, “At DaHan Temple, I reckon the emperor will be going on his journey soon, but the snowfall delayed it for a period of time. Oh right, I just came back from DaMing Palace Hall and they’re handing out some Jiuzhan lamps*. If you guys want to go make a wish, you guys should quickly go get yourselves one or else the maids might snatch them all away.”

When A-Jun heard this, she quickly jumped up, “I want one! Duan Duan, quickly, let’s go!”

When Duan Min received the order he picked up A-Jun and flew away with extreme dexterity.

Ming ChangYan asked, “What’s that?”

Zhao XiaoLan dug himself a snow pit and buried the plum blossoms he picked up earlier in it. Patting his hands, he said, “It’s a lamp that’s used for making wishes when praying to heaven and earth. Has Yan-jiejie heard of the Colored Lantern Festival?”

Ming ChangYan nodded his head, Zhao XiaoLan continued, “The meaning behind this and the colored lanterns is about the same, it’s used to make a wish during the New Years. In front of DaHan Temple is a sparkling brook that leads to the sea every year after people finish praying, the common people go there to release their Jiuzhan lamps . The lamps will float into the sea, the Dragon God will hear everyone’s wishes and grant them in the coming year.”

Ming ChangYan said, “From your statement, it seems like this lamp can be found anywhere, why are they fighting over the ones in the palace?”

Zhao XiaoLan let out a peal of mischievous laughter, “It’s only natural that the ones in the palace are different, these lamps all came from the Ninety-Ninth Temple! The ones that come from Huai Yu-gege will naturally be more effective!”

Ming ChangYan’s heart fluttered, saying, “Then what’s the point of fighting over them at DaMing Palace Hall, just go directly to Huai Yu and ask him to fold one!”

Zhao XiaoLan hadn’t even opened his mouth when Ming ChangYan excitedly ran towards the direction of the Ninety-Nineth Temple.

Chapter 40: A Seductive Gentleman – Part 2

When Huai Yu saw this, he couldn’t help but be suspicious, “What’s written in the newspaper?”

Ming ChangYan inwardly cursed: Xiu LingLong you’re a dead woman, I’m going back to settle accounts with her!

He immediately tore the LingLong Pavilion newspaper in to shreds and kneaded the shreds together, but it still wasn’t enough so he used some spiritual energy and crushed it until he felt better.

Ming ChangYan said, “There’s nothing written on it. Xiu LingLong this woman loves to spout nonsense, don’t listen to anything she says. Oh, by the way, don’t buy any newspapers today.”

Huai Yu noticed that he was extremely nervous which caused his curiosity to get even worse.

Ming ChangYan had a raging headache, after merely taking a quick glance at it he was able to clearly see the long and tedious text was nothing more than a classic romance between an unmarried man and woman. The common people love to read about the love affairs of people with high and noble positions. Huai Yu had a high position while also being a popular bachelor among the young women in the capital. Xiu LingLong went and took this as a commercial opportunity to gain some profit.

This rumor-making article fabricated a woman by the name of ‘A-Zhao’ who was clearly just Ming ChangYan.

He walked a circle around the room acting as if nothing had happened, changing the subject, “After sleeping for so long, I’m a bit hungry, is there any food?”

Huai Yu replied, “Already prepared.”

After they finished eating, a secret report came from the palace asking for Huai Yu to return.

The two rested in GuangLing for two more days before they bid farewell to Zhu ChuanKang and went back with Xiao Cheng-daren. Just as they left the city gate, they ran into a Zhao XiaoLan who was gasping for breath.

“Yan-jiejie! Bring me along! Bring me along!”

Together with him was Zhu Rong.

Ming ChangYan looked at him and said, “You want to come back too? I saw that you were at a brothel earlier and you seemed to be having such a fun time that I thought you’d decided to stay at GuangLing.”

Zhao XiaoLan climbed into the sedan, “No. Yan-jiejie I was just saying goodbye to them. If I’d just left without saying goodbye, they’d be heart-broken.”

Ming ChangYan said, “You’ve only been here for a few days and you’ve already joined in with the sisters at the brothel?”

Zhao XiaoLan innocently said, “All the women of this world can be coaxed one way or another, how is this difficult?”

Ming ChangYan felt a bit inferior, “Romantic, romantic.”

Zhao XiaoLan followed suit, “Ashamed, ashamed.”

Ever since he was small he liked joining in on women’s crowds and grew up covered in the scent of rouge. As a result, he had close female friends all over the area, an innocent yet romantic style.

The sedan was on the road for two days before they finally returned to the imperial palace.

Ming ChangYan rubbed his chin and skillfully changed into a set of woman’s clothes. He was gone for several months, so the moment he returned to the Listening Lotus Building, Fu Ling and Peony was dumbstruck and burst into a fit of tears. They asked where Ming ChangYan had gone and why he seemed to grow taller than before. Ming ChangYan began to talk rubbish on the spot, rambling about this and about that till the two were fooled by him.

The reason the emperor called Huai Yu back was to further investigate the truth behind all the strange occurrences. As for this specific situation, since Ming ChangYan was still residing within the harem, he was temporarily unable to ask around. From what Fu Ling picked up, it seemed that the person behind all this was the Eldest Prince. But the moment Ming ChangYan heard that he was aware that the Eldest Prince had been wrongly accused.

But the year was almost coming to an end and so this matter could only be handled in a hurry. The emperor didn’t look further into it and decided to conclude this case. Ming ChangYan could only think that the emperor was inconsistent with love, merely sighing in sorrow.

Out of habit he patted his chest, preparing to take out the steamed bun from his chest to fill his stomach when A-Jun suddenly arrived at his doorstep with Duan Duan.

“Important business!” she yelled before she kicked open the door that lead to the Listening Lotus Building’s courtyard.

Ming ChangYan promptly stuffed the steamed bun back in his chest, “Wow, for the princess to come all this way, my apologies for not greeting you, my apologies!”

A-Jun sat down and said, “Stop greeting, I have some important matters to discuss with you, come with me!”

“Wait, hold up, what am I sitting down for! You stop sitting too, quick, stand up!”

Ming ChangYan exclaimed, “I haven’t finished drinking my milk tea!”

“Drink what milk tea! Come with me!”

Ming ChangYan could only lay down his teacup and rapidly stumble behind A-Jun as she dragged him forwards.

There was a peach garden in the imperial palace that was named after the many peach trees that grew there. This place was close to the empresses palace while also being the place that A-Jun loved to play the most.

Ming ChangYan was pushed and pulled here, stopping, he supported his two steamed buns for a bit to prevent them from accidentally falling out.

When he raised his head, he noticed that in the peach garden there were already three women and one man sitting there. The man was naturally Zhao XiaoLan. The additional three women were at the prime of their youths, one was wearing red, another was wearing blue, and the last one was wearing green. He noted that they weren’t dressed like harem members so they ought to have been A-Jun’s friends.

A-Jun introduced, “This is the daughter of the Minister of Justice, Lady WanWan, this is the daughter of the Assistant Minister, Lady A-Jiao, and finally this is the daughter of the auspicious King Wen, Lady Zhu-er.” She pointed at Ming ChangYan, “This is the person you guys are looking for.”

It was evident that these rich young ladies were good friends of A-Jun.

Ming ChangYan was a bit confused, but he still sat down. He questioned Zhao XiaoLan first, “How do you have so much free time?”

Zhao XiaoLan answered, “The New Year’s coming up so I don’t have anything to do. Auntie wanted me to stay in the capital to celebrate the New Year so I’ve already finished greeting my older sister a Happy New Year.”

Ming ChangYan nodded his head, unable to bear it any longer, he asked, “Then why didn’t I see Huai, the Young Prime Minister?”

The moment he uttered those words everyone turned silent.

Ming ChangYan raised an eyebrow, “What’s with your expressions?!”

The daughter of the Minister of Justice, Lady WanWan said, “It’s true!”

A-Jiao remarked, “It’s true, it’s true, I figured it out.”

Zhu-er, “Wow….so exciting.”

Ming ChangYan was puzzled and at a loss. Even though he was number one in the world, a master of the Six Arts and martial arts, when it came down to the thoughts of women, it truly was difficult for him.

The four women shook their heads repeatedly, sizing him up until they were finally satisfied, all making a conclusion in secret. They scared Ming ChangYan to the point where he nearly took off.

Their touches were lighting fast, after they finished groping him they commented, “Long neck, not bad.”

“And a thin waist, it’s actually even thinner than mine, bad boys love thin waists. Wow, it’s so tender too.”

“Pale skin, ai. There’s just too many calluses on her hands, but they’re harmless.”

“Indeed, she has some good looks. No wonder, my father has gone through countless beauties yet continues to keep you in his mind.”

Ming ChangYan understood the words they just said just now were praising his handsome appearance.

This thick-faced person accepted all of them, “Haha, I’m flattered, I’m flattered.”

WanWan exclaimed, “Ah, it’s a pity, girls look, she’s forcing herself to smile!”

Ming ChangYan’s smile hung on his face: Huh??

A-Jiao comforted, “Ai, don’t feel bad, although you’re already the emperor’s woman, love has been priceless since ancient times! If you really don’t want to serve him, it’s not like he can force you!”

Zhu-er said, “Exactly, no wonder the emperor can’t touch you, I finally get it!”

Ming ChangYan’s furrowed eyebrows became more and more ferocious, “What and what? A-Jun, you talk, what was the important business that you wanted to tell me?”

A-Jun encountered a setback and let out a deep sigh, “There’s no need to keep it up, we all know about it!”

After having said that, she promptly turned around and felt around Duan Min’s bosom until she pulled out a wrinkled newspaper. A-Jun flattened it over the table, Ming ChangYan thought it looked extremely familiar until he leaned a bit closer and saw the two bolded rows of words that he knew a bit too well. If it wasn’t, ‘The Full Moon Attracts the Immortal to Move Down, The Young Prime Minister’s Love Affair with a Beautiful Lady,’ then what else could it have been?

Ming ChangYan’s complexion changed, abruptly looking towards Zhao XiaoLan.

Zhao XiaoLan was originally guilty drinking his tea and was struggling to make himself invisible, but after getting glared at by Ming ChangYan, he jumped out of his seat like a rabbit, “I-I-I-I-I-I-I DON’T KNOW!! IT WASN’T ME!!!”

After witnessing the exchanged between Ming ChangYan and Zhao XiaoLan, A-Jun was certain that her predictions were correct, and said in awe, “So XiaoLan saying that you and Huai Yu-gege were having an affair and that you were currently worried that he is going to abandon you is all true! Hey, don’t feel too sad, they’re men, they’re all like ‘I have three wives and four concubines’. Just look at Huai Yu-gege, he looks so charming and handsome, right? How could he only have one woman!”

After Ming ChangYan finished hearing those words, he was already patting his chest while coughing violently. He patted his chest so hard that the steamed bun was flattened by him and he could only take in a few breaths of air.

A-Jun was a gossiper at heart, but even this hurt her feelings. She sympathized with him and comforted, “It’s alright, it’s alright, I understand you. Which girl in this country doesn’t love him, I know!”

Ming ChangYan thought: A little girl like you knows shit! Good lord! What kind of rumor is this, spreading it around the palace, you’re hurting my innocence!

After A-Jun finished pretending to comfort him, she still couldn’t hold back her gossipy self and scooted closer to him along with the other girls, speaking a sentence a person.

“When did you get together with the Young Prime Minister?”

“Did you know that he never gets close to any girls?”

“It’s over, it’s over, you’ve become the target of hate from all the girls in the capitol!”

When A-Jun heard this she promptly said, “Excuse me, stop! I don’t hate her! This princess already has someone in her heart.”

WanWan apologized, “Sorry, I forgot about you. It’s okay, I know you only have Teacher Liu in your heart and that you’re the only girl in the capital to do so!”

Zhu-er indulged in her fantasy, “Why don’t you write a book and pass on your tricks? How did you even achieve such a thing! What you did is nearly as hard as reaching the sky!”

Ming ChangYan didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry, “Good jiejie’s, you don’t even know where these rumors came from and you’re just believing them!”

A-Jun said, “How would the words on a newspaper be fake! Besides, do you know who that beautiful lady that Huai Yu-gege is secretly meeting?”

Ming ChangYan wanted to strongly reply to her: ISN’T THAT JUST ME?!

But after thinking it over he thought that it would’ve caused a misunderstanding, so he could only seriously say, “I don’t know and don’t ask me. But, if you guys want to know so badly, why don’t you just go ask the Young Prime Minister?”

A-Jun said unnaturally, “He’s, he’s busy! The blessings ceremony for the Lantern Festival is going to start soon so Huai Yu-gege has to take a bath and burn incense seven days in advance.”

WanWan stuck out her tongue, “Are you afraid of him!”

A-Jun rebutted, “How, how could I be afraid of him! I’m not afraid of him!”

WanWan, “It’s not like I’m able to meet him, so I’ve got nothing to be afraid of! Don’t try to divert the conversation, hey, you!” She said excitedly, “Do you really not plan on writing a book, those books are popular in the capital, especially those about the Young Prime Minister! Everyone else makes stuff up about what he’s like in love, but you’re different! What you write will be true, plus, if you wrote them, you’d definitely earn a large profit!”

Ming ChangYan held up a hand and refused, “Sorry, but I politely decline.”’

A-Jiao played with the tips of her hair, pouting, “Don’t be so rigid. Yu YouXiang’s daughter loves the Young Prime Minister to death, it’s said that last year she prayed to the heavens that it was love at first sight and has been captivated with him for three years! Tch, that stupid stupid woman! Oh right, a few months ago, Jianghu Daily’s QinYue-Jun wrote an issue, it was a very sentimental love story with the main protagonist naturally being the Young Prime Minister.”

WanWan said, “I know, I bought that copy! It was right after class at Egret Academy, they were printing and handing them out at the study, they even added pictures! The price for paper soared, and I heard that Yu YouXiang’s daughter bought a thousand copies! When they came to collect them that day, they had to use carts!”

“Ah, they sure are rich. My dad won’t allow me to engage in this kind of honest work. All-day long he only gives me a few rings, so frustrating!”

WanWan suddenly turned around and asked Ming ChangYan, “Did you buy it?”

Ming ChangYan replied, “Where would I have the money to buy such a thing! Besides, even if I wanted to buy them, I don’t know where to buy them!”

WanWan opened her mouth, “Why didn’t you just entrust your servants to go buy them, plus every month on the fifteenth day, the doors to the Inner City will open for 6 hours. A lot of peddlers will set up shop there, you’ve never gone?”

Ming ChangYan didn’t know about this at all.

WanWan lamented, “You really are stubborn, the only good point about you being your face. No wonder you weren’t able to grab onto the Young Prime Minister’s heart!”

She fished out a picture book from her sleeves, “Take it!”

Ming ChangYan was familiar with this sort of bright and flowery cover, definitely produced from the hands of QinYue-Jun. On the lower right of the cover, there was the official seal of the Jianghu Daily that prohibited any other studio to steal their work. Flipping it over, inside there were multiple images of Huai Yu in his everyday life. It was only natural that the majority of it was fabricated, for example, among them was: Him semi-clothed, holding a fan and cooling off underneath the shade of a tree. These sorts of images were used to cater to the young women in the capital. But Ming ChangYan knew for Huai Yu this person, putting on clothes was very rigorous, accompanied by the complex layers, it takes him roughly half an incense stick to finish.

WanWan said, “You better take care of it, there’s nowhere else selling these!”

Ming ChangYan couldn’t disappoint a pretty woman’s good intentions, so he sincerely accepted it.

The young girl’s conference continued for a long time, extending out from Huai Yu, they began to discuss the behavior and looks of different young masters in the capital. Who and who is the smartest, who and who’s the most annoying, who and who’s the most disliked, and so on.

Ming ChangYan began to feel drowsy from listening to them, deciding to get up and take his leave. The girls originally wanted to call over the legendary lover the Young Prime Minister over so that they could satisfy their gossiping desires. At this moment, if they’d seen him and talked about him, they would’ve lost interest and waved their hands, and finally give Ming ChangYan the time to kneel down and rest.

Ming ChangYan was exactly who they were looking for, so he yawned and left.

Zhao XiaoLan quickly caught up to him, faithfully saying, “Yan-jiejie, it really isn’t me who said that. It was A-Jun who saw the newspaper and came to me demanding information. Of course, I definitely didn’t say anything. So she went to find you.”

Ming ChangYan raised his eyebrow, “Alright, I’ll believe you for now.”

After he was disturbed by A-Jun, it had already begun to turn dark.

Ming ChangYan’s stomach was empty, letting out a wild rumbling sound. Zhao XiaoLan coughed, whispering, “Yan-jiejie, are you hungry?”

Ming ChangYan nodded his head, “Obviously.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Then are you going back to the Listening Lotus Building?”

Nowadays, it was like Ming ChangYan was going back to the Cold Palace, the food at the Listening Lotus Building was inferior to that of any other palace.

Ming ChangYan would simply eat steamed buns to pass his days, it truly was too miserable.

“Not going back!”

Zhao XiaoLan beamed, “Great, then you can come to my Auntie’s place to eat, their food is better than yours and mine!”

Ming ChangYan heart stirred: Auntie’s? Isn’t his Aunt the empress! How could the stuff the empress eats compare to the stuff that concubines can only see! These exotic delicacies would never even be able to grace my table.

When he first arrived at the Central Plains, he had discovered that the food there was delicious. Compared to the delicacies of the Central Plains, Tokhara’s food was like fishing up whatever was in the sewers and adding some salt, it was almost unpalatable! Among the culinary delicacies of this world, just how delicious would the empress’s food be?

Reaching this thought, he quickly said, “Yes yes yes, let’s go eat at the empress’s place, let’s go together!”

Zhao XiaoLan saw that he truly was starving, almost floating as he walked. He didn’t dare dely them, walking straight to the Yongxian Palace.

Before they even arrived at the Yongxian Palace, Zhao XiaoLan exclaimed, “Why are there so many people here?”

Moving forwards, Aunt LingZhi who’s always beside the empress said, “Young Master XiaoLan, you’re here. And this is?”

Zhao XiaoLan replied, “Oh, this is Listening Lotus Building’s Yan-shaoshi. I bumped into her along the way, she was just about to come pay her respects to Auntie so we came together.”

He continued, “Aunt, why are there so many people at Yongxian Palace?”

Aunt replied, “The empress is feeling unwell today, it seems that an evil spirit is agitating her. The Immortal Yun Qing his here at Yongxian Palace to exorcise the place.”

Ming ChangYan’s heart stirred and his footsteps inexplicably slowed down. The two gracefully continued walking, passing by a fishpond at the front of the courtyard. When Ming ChangYan crossed over the bridge, he looked into the waters and tidied up his clothes.

Zhao XiaoLan stepped into the courtyard and cheerfully yelled, “Auntie!”

The moment Ming ChangYan stepped inside, he only saw that in the courtyard, there was a dignified woman adorned in jewels resting on a chaise couch. With one look at her style of dress, it was definitely the empress. Standing close the empress was Huai Yu wearing an even more refined and complicated outfit. In his right hand he held a willow branch, dipping it in a porcelain cup filled with water, he scattered the droplets across the ground.

After he finished scattering them, he was just about to take his leave when the empress faintly sat up and asked, “You’re leaving just like that? Why don’t you stay for a meal.”

Huai Yu cupped his hands together, “Yun Qing won’t disturb the empress.”

He turned around just in time to catch Zhao XiaoLan together with Ming ChangYan come through the doorway.

Before they arrived, a voice echoed.

“Auntie, I’m hungry! Oh right, I brought someone to eat together with us! It’s the Listening Lotus Building’s Yan-shaoshi, she just so happened to come here to pay her respects!”

Huai Yu paused, retracting the step that he’d just taken. Expressionlessly, he turned back and said to the empress, “Sorry to disturb you.”

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 39

Chapter 39: A Seductive Gentleman – Part 1

“In human life, accomplishment must bring joy, I spend a thousand gold pieces completely but they will never come back. Heaven made me – my abilities have a purpose; we must drink three hundred cups all at once!*”

(TN: Poem by famous Chinese poet Li Bai, our girl here mixed up the verses. She says some more lines of the poem later on in case you get confused. If you want to read it yourself here → https://www.tsiosophy.com/2013/01/bring-in-the-wine/)

Ming ChangYan was slightly surprised.

Huai Yu took out some of the hemostatic medicine that carried on him, tore off a piece of satin and temporarily wrapped it around the other’s palm. In the end, he was still a bit worried, so he tied two extra knots.

The white fog scattered and on the streets came four beautiful men carrying a sedan. The sedan was lavished in jewels, and in it was a woman who was currently sitting slanted. In her hands, she carried an exquisite and fine wine jar and gave Ming ChangYan an unfathomable look.

“I’ll sing a song to this gentleman, I ask you to lend me your ears.”

Ming ChangYan let out a sigh of relief and said, “What wind blew you here?”

She replied, “The wind on the moon.”

Ming ChangYan, “It seems that I must have received a great honor to have this heartless lady get out of the house for me.”

This poised and luxurious woman is the renowned owner of the LingLong Pavilion and the world’s most unscrupulous businesswoman in Ming ChangYan’s eyes, Xiu LingLong.

Xiu LingLong’s cheeks were in a drunken state, standing up she said, “Xiu LingLong merely came here to act as disaster relief, but unexpectedly ran into an acquaintance.”

Ming ChangYan corrected her, “Your poetry’s wrong.”

Xiu LingLong gently chuckled, “Others read it wrong, so why can’t I read it wrong. Is Young Master ChangYan not aware of a certain phrase among the people called, a woman’s virtue is to have no talent?”

Ming ChangYan, “You are someone lacking in virtue.”

After Xiu LingLong finished laughing, she stood up and left the sedan. Two good-looking guys that were stationed outside the sedan immediately carried in a huge rolled-up carpet and moved forwards till the carpet rolled to the edge of Ming ChangYan’s foot before stopping. Another man held out a basket of flowers while walking he would spread a thick layer of petals on the carpet.

Xiu LingLong set her foot on the carpet.

Ming ChangYan had known about his friend’s fussy temperament for more than ten years, so he wasn’t surprised by the action. On the contrary, Huai Yu took a few more glances at it.

Zhao XiaoLan took in the full view of what was in front of him and was stupefied, ruefully saying, “After having lived for so long, I’ve never seen anyone’s mannerism be more expensive than Huai Yu-gege!”

Xiu LingLong waved her fan and supported her forehead, “Waving this fan is so tiring.”

Ming ChangYan grudgingly said, “If it’s tiring then take off some of the gems on it, it blinds me every time the sun shines on it.”

Xiu LingLong angrily exclaimed, “Women, even at death cannot renounce their beauty. Forget it, even if I explain it you wouldn’t understand. I came here to ask you, how are you still alive?”

Ming ChangYan took a glance at Zhao XiaoLan and Zhu Rong, and said, “Let’s talk over there.”

Xiu LingLong once again mustered up her large forces and rolled out a second carpet. Only after the two walked a distance away did Ming ChangYan say, “That’s exactly what I want to ask you. Who told you I was still alive?”

Xiu LingLong unhurriedly said, “Is there anything in this world that you wouldn’t be able to conceal from my eyes?”

Ming ChangYan remarked, “You have a spy under Liu Kuang?”

Xiu LingLong softly complained, “It’s unavoidable. If I didn’t know that you were still alive, how would I be able to bestow upon you my assistance? Young Master ChangYan, you’re truly hurting my heart. We’ve known each other for so long, but you didn’t even tell me, you’re twisting our friendship.”

Ming ChangYan snickered, “Our friendship is you using me to earn you money after my death, give me 50 percent.”

Xiu LingLong used her fan to cover up her face, “Now that I’m thinking about it, to Xiu LingLong the supremacy under Heaven, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal if I lost a Ming ChangYan.”

Ming ChangYan said, “I don’t feel like talking nonsense with you. Since you’re here, then help me with something.”

Xiu LingLong, “When Xiu LingLong gets a job she never asks what it is, but how much money they give.” She grinned, “However, on the account that we’ve known each other for so many years, I won’t charge you for this matter.”

Ming ChangYan uttered, “Bring Ming Yue’s body back and hand it over to his family.”

Xiu LingLong took a look at the corpse on the ground and clicked her tongue, “The last time I saw him, he was only 15 years old.”

Ming ChangYan was unwilling to continue talking. Xiu LingLong watched his expression, with a knowing smile she immediately stroked her hand three times. In a short period of time, a few figures in black appeared on the streets. They worked efficiently and after Xiu LingLong instructed them with a few words, Ming Yue’s body was taken away.

Ming ChangYan questioned, “Did you see the King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress just now?”

Xiu LingLong fanned herself, smiling, “What King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress, never heard of them.”

The two walked back a few steps, Ming ChangYan saw that Huai Yu’s mood wasn’t very good and all the thoughts about the King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress was cast aside and onto Huai Yu. He thought: How come he’s unhappy again?

Ming ChangYan said, “It’s not convenient to talk on the streets, let’s go back to the inn first. And you, Xiu LingLong, put away your habits.”

In a quarter of an hour, four people sat in an inn.

Zhao XiaoLan kept thinking about his bowls of congee and him together with Zhu Rong went back to fulfill those good deeds.

As soon as they arrived at the room, Huai Yu went and took out the medicine box, going forth and treating Ming ChangYan’s wounds.

In the inn, Ming ChangYan was the first to begin speaking, “I want to ask you about something.”

These words were directed towards Xiu LingLong.

Xiu LingLong replied, “I know nothing but words.”

Ming ChangYan seemed to be dodging something, unnaturally tapping the table a few times before he finally asked, “TianQing…what’s the current situation at TianQing?”

Xiu LingLong said, “What Young Master ChangYan wants to ask is whether or not anyone else has died in TianQing, right?”

Ming ChangYan’s expression changed.

Xiu LingLong was trying to sell a few more tricks to him to play with him a bit more, but unexpectedly after being coldly glared at by Huai Yu, she straightened up and answered, “You can rest assured, except you, the rest of TianQing has been great. It’s just that, after you left, more than half of the outer disciples left. Now there’s no more who’s better or who’s worse in your sect, although it’s not as grand as before, you could still get by.”

She said, “Besides, what hasn’t TianQing undergone? I remember back then, in order to eat and drink, you would go out and sell your skills?”

Ming ChangYan’s heart relaxed, feeling much more relieved, “Naturally, life is still difficult to maintain.”

Huai Yu opened his mouth, “The fight just now wasn’t something done by Ugly Guanyin, there seems to be someone else behind it.”

Ming ChangYan, “I’m aware. Little Huai Yu, have you heard of the King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress? Mixing weddings and funerals together is their notable feature. Arranged by the King of Hell, those who don’t arrive; at the fifth of five they want you dead and at midnight there’s no one left behind.”

Huai Yu, “Based on the skills of that Ugly Guanyin, they aren’t half-hearted.”

Ming ChangYan said, “It’s true. Except this King of Hell only takes the path, but never sets up a banquet. They didn’t take our lives but instead knew when to stop, truly nothing at all like the rumors about their styles of execution. My guess is that they were trying to protect Ugly Guanyin, but I don’t know what kind of relation the two have with each other. But the only thing we can guarantee is that they have something to do with this whole He Bo taking a wife affair.”

Xiu LingLong said, “Based on what you’re saying, there’s a behind the scenes in He Bo taking a wife?”

Ming ChangYan, “Now this isn’t something that you need to know.”

Xiu LingLong inexplicably sized up Ming ChangYan, “Just a moment ago I heard that pretty little youngster call you Yan-jiejie, what, you got tired of being a man and now you’re becoming a woman?”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “You already have a spy on Liu Kuang, so why are you putting on an act and asking me?”

Xiu LingLong gossiped, “So you really went to become the wife of the emperor? HAHAHAHAHA! Ai, this truly is the most comical thing under Heaven! No matter how you look at it, this sort of prodigal act is only something you would do, but hearing you admit to it will always be funnier than hearing about it! This rotten idea was given to you by Lady Hua, right? I know what kind of person she is, on the surface she’s gentle and quiet but has a bellyful of evil tricks! If you two weren’t both prodigies then you wouldn’t have been deserving of the title childhood sweethearts! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

Ming ChangYan kicked her stool, “What are you laughing for!”

Xiu LingLong laughed till she was leaning forwards and back, her face flooded with tears as she slapped the table, “The emperor’s wife….THE EMPEROR’S WIFE! HAHAHAHAHA! Only you two would think of something like that! Good, it’s too good!”

Ming ChangYan oddly glanced at Huai Yu before continuing, “Alright alright, are you done laughing? If you’re done laughing then let’s discuss some proper business.”

Xiu LingLong cheerfully fanned her fan and put away her smiling expression, asking, “What proper business do you want to discuss with me?”

Ming ChangYan thought for a bit before he declared, “None. You should quickly leave!”

Xiu LingLong gave him another unfathomable look, staring at Ming ChangYan for a bit before she smugly exited.

Only he and Huai Yu remained in the room.

Ming ChangYan began, “The person responsible for the murder of GuiFeng sect two years ago must also be behind this epidemic, in addition, the supernatural occurrences in the palace ought to be them as well.”

He continued, “The epidemic occurred for the purpose of a large death count and the killings in GuiFeng sect was to consign me to eternal damnation, but what’s the purpose of all those events in the palace? Could it be that they leaked out the news of me being alive?’

Huai Yu said, “If that’s the case, then it’s a bit too quick.”

Ming ChangYan, “That makes sense. This person definitely wouldn’t just put an end to their plans. We stopped this epidemic but they’ll definitely begin using other methods to collect dead bodies. What method, besides an epidemic, would tally up a large death count? What do they want with these dead bodies? For an evil cult or for sacrifice?”

Huai Yu ventured, “Both are possible. In addition to dead people, they also want living people.” After having said that, Huai Yu paused for a bit before continuing, “This isn’t the first time that similar occurrences happened, there were some previous instances where someone had planted poison in a well. It’s just that even though we eventually captured the person responsible, we couldn’t find anything else.”

Ming ChangYan threw himself on the bed.

He thought: The events that keep popping up one after another in Jianghu and the palace were all clearly directed towards me. I’m afraid that the operator behind the epidemic isn’t related to that female priest that responsible for GuiFeng sect. What’s the point of doing all this? It would’ve been fine if I’d just died like that two years ago, now I’ve practically become a handicap. I’m neither a person nor a ghost, I’m honestly useless.

When his thoughts reached there, Ming ChangYan asked, “Huai Yu, do you have any sort of way for me to regain some more of my cultivation?”

Huai Yu replied, “You just have to use all your heart to take care of yourself. If you continue to act so recklessly, even immortals wouldn’t be able to save you.”

When Ming ChangYan heard this, he began to tease, “Aren’t you an immortal! You’re the little Yun Qing that descended from the Heavens, is there anything that you can’t do?”

Huai Yu was already accustomed to the other’s flattery, merely humming twice, “Then you should properly do what’s told.”

For a long time, no one spoke.

When Huai Yu looked over, Ming ChangYan had already closed his eyes and in a deep slumber. He was just about to say something when the person lying on the bed flipped over and rolled themselves into a little ball, tightly wrapping the quilt around their body.

Ming ChangYan slept for a very long time, after waking up, the clothes on his body had already been changed and the sky was shining brightly. Only after Huai Yu had helped him change his bandages and boiled some more medicine for him to drink did he ask, “How long was I asleep?”

Huai Yu collected the bowl, “Two days and one night.”

Ming ChangYan was alarmed, “Oh no oh no, how did I sleep so long? I still wanted to question those rescued brides!”

Huai Yu stopped him, “I went to question them for you, their statements were all the same. Apart from the information about the paper dolls, they didn’t have anything else.”

Ming ChangYan pondered for a bit, “The King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress won’t be able to escape from the responsibility of this matter. The people of Jianghu deem them to be the King of Hell, but how could they truly be the King of Hell!” He paused for a bit before asking, “Right, are there improvements to the epidemic situation?”

Huai Yu replied, “It’s under control. The health of patients whose symptoms have eased up a bit improved after taking some medicine.”

Ming ChangYan suddenly said, “Don’t you not want others to know that you’re experienced in the medical field? Why are you being so generous this time?”

Huai Yu calmly said, “I put the medicine in the congee that Zhao XiaoLan’s handing out.”

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan exclaimed, “You’re so sly! Wouldn’t this cause them to jump to another great deity and begin manifesting the thought that the Young Prime Minister has the boundless power of God?”

Huai Yu felt disinclined to give him any attention, saying, “You should keep sleeping.”

Ming ChangYan promptly waved his hand and got off the bed, “No sleep no sleep, I’ve already slept enough! If I keep sleeping I might die!”

“Then lie down to rest.”

“That won’t do, my bones are about to fall apart by how much I’ve been lying down! Besides, lying down by myself without any books to read is too boring.”

When he mentioned books, Huai Yu immediately thought of those melodramatic novels that he read last time. His complexion changed as he humphed, “The books you read are a bunch of vulgar and dull works.”

Ming ChangYan defended himself, “Hey, how are they vulgar, how are they dull? I myself wrote a few of them back then for Xiu LingLong, and not to mention they were very well-received!”

This all happened back when Ming shaoxia was 19 years old. When he arrived at the Central Plains, besides loving to fight and practicing his martial arts, he also had a love for novels about love affairs and romance. For example, a sly and treacherous scholar and a devilishly beautiful woman, one who isn’t sincere and one who doesn’t think too much. Afterward, Ming shaoxia was unable to contain his desire of creating a work of his own, so not only did he read them he also began to learn from them. Thus he created himself an elegant pen name called ‘Gorgeous Little Playboy’ and began writing extremely passionate, romantic, and melodramatic stories. Although it was somewhat prominent that his writing style was immature, he still wrote a lot, which helped him prevail over his opponents and earn a small reputation.

It’s just that every time ‘Gorgeous Little Playboy’s’ works got on the LingLong Pavilion newspaper, it didn’t lack its fair share of people who would cry to their fathers and yell at their mothers over it. This person’s writing always concentrated deep emotions in their works and wrote about the love between men and women. The plot was always full of mishaps and all in all a confused and hideous mess. The sequences were always incorrect and a load of crap. In short, it was obvious at first glance that this ‘Gorgeous Little Playboy’ was certainly a young maiden writing all this in their bedroom. And furthermore, this maiden must’ve never had any access to human affairs since it seemed that even a meeting between a man and woman was an outright mess of lies.

As Ming ChangYan reminisced about those books he’d written, he suddenly realized that truly was brimming with talent and an incomparable genius, and couldn’t help but be astonished by himself.

He drank a bowl of tea and said, “Don’t say that you’ve never seen them before! If not then your knowledge and experience are way too shallow.”

Huai Yu snorted, “Of course I….”

He was only halfway done with his sentence when Ming ChangYan attentively gazed at him. Huai Yu realized that he had taken the bait and as a result, refused to speak.

At this exact moment, from downstairs came the shouts of a book-seller. Ming ChangYan pushed opened the window and decided that he wanted a copy of the Jianghu Daily.

The book-seller said, “Young Master, the Jianghu Daily has already been sold out, but there’s still some copies of the LingLong Pavilion, do you want them!”

Ming ChangYan, “Throw up a copy of the LingLong Pavilion!”

Even though the newspapers from the LingLong Pavilion aren’t as orthodox as the Jianghu Daily, they still covered major events. Ming ChangYan took the newspaper and sat in front of the table. He poured himself another cup of tea and began to slowly sip it down.

Opening the newspaper, on the front page there two rows of words in bold: The Full Moon Attracts the Immortal to Move Down, The Young Prime Minister’s Love Affair with a Beautiful Lady.

“PFFFFFTT!”

The tea that was in Ming ChangYan’s mouth sprayed all over the front piece of his robes.

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 38

Chapter 38: The Nightly Rain Blows North – Part 2

The teacup sitting on top of the table broke into pieces.

Ming ChangYan’s face was lowered so his expression couldn’t be seen. In brief, it could already be guessed that it was extremely hard to take.

The outer disciple that came to tell the news was shaking in fright, promptly saying, “I only know this much, nothing else.”

After he finished, he turned around and disappeared without a trace.

Huai Yu sat down and checked his pulse, “It’s not good to get angry in your current condition.”

From the beginning to the end, Ming ChangYan was completely silent. Huai Yu changed his posture from checking his pulse to holding his wrist, squeezing it twice.

“It wasn’t your fault.”

Ming ChangYan stood up, “I’m going back to the inn. I need to ask Ming Yue about it.”

He had just merely heard that he was alive when he was beaten to death, yet he still felt an ache at the pit of his stomach. Ming ChangYan saw Zhong YuLou grow up and knew that this person had a simple personality. He hated hardships and pain the most, just a tiny injury would cause him to weep endlessly for half a day. Under that rod, how was he able to endure the omnipresent, blunt pain?

Every step of Ming ChangYan’s seemed to use a lot of energy, drawing out every bit of his strength.

Huai Yu chased after him and grabbed Ming ChangYan’s arm. Ming ChangYan looked at him, Huai Yu said, “Can you walk by yourself.”

Ming ChangYan lowered his voice, “It’s alright.”

He pursed his lips, seemingly trying to think of some words of comfort but after racking his brains, he couldn’t think of a single one that would be pleasant to hear.

After walking for a while, Ming ChangYan suddenly said, “Something’s not right.”

Huai Yu was watching his every action at all times, fearing that he might lose his mind if he wasn’t careful enough. Thus he immediately answered, “What’s not right?”

“That person wasn’t right!”

Huai Yu glanced at him.

Ming ChangYan said, “Since all the people in the training grounds were killed, then why does he know about all of this?”

He quickly began running towards the inn, “We need to go find Ming Yue, immediately!”

The two didn’t dare idle, rushing towards the inn without stopping. Just as they arrived downstairs, from the third floor came the sound of things being overturned and a fight. Ming ChangYan was about to jump when Huai Yu held on to his shoulder. In a short period of time, a figure came flying out from upstairs, precisely Ming Yue.

On Ming Yue’s left shoulder was a flesh wound that was currently steadily pouring blood. It seems that the injury that Ming ChangYan had inflicted upon him was torn open during the fight.

He fell back a few steps and turned his head to catch sight of Ming ChangYan.

The two were face to face for a moment, having nothing to say to the other. Suddenly from the third floor came a familiar voice.

“Da-shixiong! Long-time no see!”

The person flipped over the window and landed on a row of tiles. They were smiling happily, cutely fiddling with the sword in their hands. They said, “Why are you so surprised? Oh, pardon me, I forgot, I’m supposed to be dead.”

The boy on the third floor was precisely ‘Zhong YuLou’.

Ming ChangYan paused before instantly reacting. This person was a fake.

Although they had the appearance of Zhong YuLou, their expression and behavior were as different as day and night. Wearing Zhong YuLou’s face while conducting grotesque actions truly made a person’s hair stand on one end. Ming ChangYan’s expression was cold, “Who are you?”

‘Zhong YuLou’ giggled, “Da-shixiong, you’re so cold. The person who caused my death is right beside you yet you’re not killing him to avenge me. How could you still ask me who I am? Ming Yue, who do you think I am, aren’t I the shixiong whom you murdered?”

When Ming Yue heard this, he slightly paused, before he immediately gasped for air, cursing, “You shut up…you shut up!”

Ming ChangYan said, “Was that outer disciple earlier you as well?”

‘Zhong YuLou’ slightly bent his back and grinned, “You guess.”

Huai Yu reached a verdict, “Ugly Guanyin.”

Ugly Guanyin laughed, “Hehehehehehe, Da-shixiong, I died to miserably! It hurts, why didn’t you come save me! You’re still alive but I died, I’m so miserable!”

Ming Yue resisted the pain and yelled, “You’re saying nonsense! Shut up! Don’t say it! Don’t say…”

Ugly Guanyin said, “HAHAHAHAHAHA! What? Your Da-shixiong is here so you’re telling me to shut up? I don’t want to.”

They were filled with cheerful talk, “Da-shixiong, don’t you want to know how your little sister fell into Wan QianQiu’s grasp?”

Ming Yue’s eyes were bloodshot and full of resentment. He picked up his sword and charged towards Ugly Guanyin.

Ugly Guanyin was fighting with him while also dodging, his lips never resting once, “It’s only natural that your good shidi took that jade pendant to go find her!”

Ming Yue fiercely pushed the sword towards him, howling, “You’re the one who detained my mother and father, if I didn’t listen to you, you were going to kill them!”

Ugly Guanyin used their sleeve to cover their face and fluttered onto the ground, “You’re right, hehehehe, your parent’s lives are lives, but your Da-shixiong’s sister’s life isn’t a life then!”

Ming Yue’s heart trembled, not daring to look towards Ming ChangYan. In a fit of rage, he stood up with his eyes wide in anger and defended, “I didn’t want to kill her, it was you! You deceived me!”

Ugly Guanyin suddenly stopped.

“Little Ming Yue ah, little Ming Yue, why don’t you take a guess on why I chose you to do all those things? These past two years, you’ve accomplished every matter beautifully. I like you a lot.”

Hearing this, the blood congestion in Ming Yue’s eyes flowed even stronger, “….Shut up! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!”

Ugly Guanyin’s laugh became more savage. Who would’ve expected that when they landed on the table, Huai Yu made a move. The table couldn’t bear the spiritual energy, immediately splitting into pieces.

Ugly Guanyin’s expression changed, their smiling expression completely vanishing, staring face to face with Huai Yu.

“For a long time, I’ve heard that the distinguished Young Prime Minister was reclusive and paid no attention to the martial circles. I didn’t know that he too loves to pry into other people’s business.”

Huai Yu didn’t pay attention to them, reaching out to a neighboring vendor and grabbing a glazed mirror. Ugly Guanyin’s pupils shrank, adopting the attitude of running away. Just as expected, Huai Yu slightly exerted some strength in his hand to break the mirror into thousands of sharp blades and wrapped them up in spiritual energy. He was fast, but Huai Yu was faster. Thousands of mirror fragments rushed towards them, recognizing Ugly Guanyin’s countless changes making them unable to escape.

As expected, although Ugly Guanyin avoided them at all costs, he was unable to withdraw his body away. Without waiting for Huai Yu to make another move, their entire body was already drenched in blood without a single good piece of flesh on them. It is said that this Ugly Guanyin cherishes their own face, and would prefer to use their own body to take the fragments than damage even a little bit of their face.

Ming ChangYan exclaimed, “Keep them alive!”

Huai Yu nodded his head, but Ugly Guanyin didn’t give him the chance to allow him to get close.

They have been in Jianghu for many years, their strange behavior and peevishness were all done to their own tastes. It was difficult to meet someone who could match them, they murdered without blinking an eye, and they rarely suffered losses. Now under the hands of Huai Yu, they couldn’t exert their strength and were slowly being compelled to retreat. Their heart felt annoyed, their expression abashed.

Ugly Guanyin kicked the vendor down and stopped Huai Yu for a bit then leaped backward. Yet to their surprise, they suddenly felt a burst of pain from behind. Ming ChangYan unsheathed his sword pointed it towards their face.

This person was being attacked from the front and rear, clenching their teeth, they fought while thinking of a way to escape.

During this matter of life and death, a single drop of rain landed on the ground.

The sky suddenly turned rich and lively as fine rain came drizzling down, looking as paperwhite as snowflakes.

They were circular with four loopholes, just like paper money.

Following closely came mournful and penetrating sounds of a suona* echoing down the street while two rows of paper dolls draped in red and green beat on a gong. The ghostly energy was dense as they all wore smiles and slowly walked towards them.

(TN: Played during festivals and processions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suona)

Ming ChangYan opened his mouth, “Combining a funeral and a wedding with paper dolls raising a coffin and having soldiers opening a path. The King of Hell is making an entrance.”

Huai Yu stood in front of him to protect him, “The King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress?”

Ming ChangYan remarked, “Be careful, I’ve never met them before.”

At the ends of the originally empty street came two rows of very strange paper dolls. The first two rows wore red and green, their robes fluttering in the breeze. The four that were lifting the sedan completed the look of a marriage. The other two rows of paper dolls in the back were carrying coffin banners, holding up the tablet of the deceased. The paper money comes one after another, completing the look of a funeral.

Huai Yu suddenly covered up Ming ChangYan’s ears, “Don’t listen. There’s something weird about the music.”

Just as expected, after hearing too much of the music, the Ming Yue with somewhat inferior spiritual energy’s expression distorted into pain, seemingly suffering a great penalty.

The closer they got, the more complicated the voices around them became. There were howls of grief, calls for help, and wails of a child. Furthermore, there were the amusing giggles of maidens, their laughs flirtatious and feminine, disturbing the human mind.

Along the way, the first two paper dolls in the row suddenly pulled out long blades from their bodies. Huai Yu knitted his brows and lifted his foot to kick at the pits of their stomachs. Except the paper doll didn’t fall down but instead charged with their blades.

Ming ChangYan took his sword and stuffed it into Huai Yu’s hands, “I reckon that they poured spiritual energy into them, so their stiffness is matchless right now. Hitting it would be useless, it can’t die. Us? Not necessarily.”

Huai Yu hugged his waist and slightly exerted some force, withdrawing four steps back.

Ming ChangYan faintly narrowed his eyes, stating, “Chop down!”

Huai Yu’s eyesight was very good. With Ming ChangYan’s reminder, he had a flash of realization and looked towards the backs of the paper dolls. As foreseen, in the air there were thin silk threads, occasionally reflecting a silver light, not something a normal person would see.

Ming ChangYan pried open the arm around his waist, “Taking me with you would drag you down, it’s not like I’m unable to defeat a few paper people. This Joyful King of Hell deciding to use needles is like them getting kicked onto a hot grilling iron!”

Huai Yu glanced at him.

Ming ChangYan simply shook him off by force, running towards Ming Yue by himself. His mind was currently full of doubts, continuously being put into confusion, wanting to ask about the situation multiple times.

“I won’t die!” shouted Ming ChangYan.

Meanwhile, in the disorder, he ran in the direction of Ming Yue and Ugly Guanyin. The two met by chance in front of Ming Yue and Ugly Guanyin was also disguising themselves as Zhong YuLou to the point of perfection that could’ve been passed off as genuine, making Ming ChangYan’s mind feel disturbed. They laughed out loud, “Da-shixiong, you want to protect Ming Yue? He’s a traitor, I’m not. Look at who I am, I’m Zhong YuLou, Da-shixiong!”

Ming ChangYan couldn’t help but feel vexed, taking out three needles from his cuff and threw them in Ugly Guanyin’s direction.

Ugly Guanyin dodged sideways, and in this split second, Ming ChangYan reached out and pulled the expressionless Ming Yue next to him.

Ugly Guanyin joyfully grinned, “Ming ChangYan, powerless yet still thinking of helping someone cross a river. So admirable!”

Ming ChangYan didn’t feel like talking nonsense with them. Even though he only recovered 10 to 20 percent of his cultivation, he was still able to make a few moves in front of Ugly Guanyin. Except when the two were exchanged moves, there were still paper dolls causing trouble. Ugly Guanyin secretly thought: I came to GuangLing to kill Ming Yue this talkative little boy. If Ming ChangYan wants to stop me, even if I wouldn’t be able to kill him immediately, I’m still going to have him suffer some hardships!

Thinking of this, they exerted some more force and began to ceasingly tangle with Ming ChangYan. Ming ChangYan wanted to look at Ugly Guanyin’s true appearance, reaching out with his right hand, he grabbed onto the other’s shoulder and pulled them forward. Ugly Guanyin saw this as an escape plan, causing Ming ChangYan to only grab onto an outer robe, the body already gone its separate ways. On their waist, there were about a dozen blades.

Ming Yue’s pupils contracted, yelling out, “Da-shixiong! Blades! Be careful the blades!”

Ming ChangYan was startled, slightly widening his eyes, but already fell short of dodging when Ugly Guanyin threw the blades and cut through the air like hot knives on butter. It created a strong gale and flew towards Ming ChangYan.

Suddenly, something vigorous wrapped itself around Ming ChangYan. The blades that were about to pierce into Ming ChangYan’s abdomen landed right into Ming Yue’s chest.

The atmosphere froze in an instant.

Ugly Guanyin clicked their tongue, “Little Ming Yue ah little Ming Yue, I like that part of you being able to understand the trend of the situation the most.”

Having said this, they used both their hands to apply spiritual energy to them and ferociously pushed that blade deeper into Ming Yue’s chest. By the looks of it, it seems that they want to use the same blade to run threw Ming Yue and kill Ming ChangYan.

Ming Yue vomited a mouthful of blood. As the blade passed through his chest and go out through the back, he bit his lip and tolerated the pain, and decided to snap this blade in half. Ming ChangYan hadn’t reacted yet when he was suddenly pushed away. Without anything helping him up, Ming Yue staggered. And with a gasp of breath, he kneeled on the ground.

Ming ChangYan was being perpetually shocked and still hadn’t fully recovered yet. Ugly GuanYin’s blades flew forwards, one by one advanced towards Ming Yue. Ming Yue was unable to budge at the moment and let the other slaughter. His abdomen was repeated stabbed, the blood spraying three feet.

He laboriously looked up, his eyes in sorrowful. He gazed at Ming ChangYan like he was trying his hardest to say something. In the end, the shine in Ming Yue’s eyes gave out and his body relaxed, his vitality breaking off and wasn’t able to say a single word.

Ugly Guanyin clapped their hands, raising their feet and kicked Ming Yue to the ground. The broken jade in his bosom also scattered across the ground.

“Death is near at hand and you still think about struggling. So talkative, you disappointed me.”

They walked forwards, stepping on the jade and said, “I helped you settle things with this little ingrate, but, if you want to thank me, there’s no need.”

At this moment, Huai Yu had already finished settling the business with the paper dolls. Now that Ugly Guanyin didn’t have the help of the paper dolls, they didn’t dare stay long. They already attained their goal so they cheerfully laughed as they began to escape. Ming ChangYan’s voice was hoarse as he said, “Are you courting death.”

He picked up the blade that was bent in half by Ming Yue and held it in his palms. Even with the flesh of his palms badly mangled, he continued to approach Ugly Guanyin. Huai Yu took three steps in just two steps, stepping forward to provide assistance. Ugly Guanyin saw they were one up against two and quickly realized that they wouldn’t be a match for them. They conjured up a smile and abruptly went to hide behind a vendor’s stall. Ming ChangYan chased after them, but unexpectedly they turned around and turned into the form of a maiden. Her eyes and eyebrows were bent, her black hair slightly curly. Innocently, she said, “Brother, do you want to kill me?”

Not only did Ming ChangYan’s breathing stop, but even Huai Yu looked distracted.

This young maiden’s appearance was beautiful and looked exactly like Ming ChangYan.

At that moment when the two were absent-minded, the young maiden suddenly rushed towards the alley on her right and immediately disappeared without a trace. Huai Yu was the first to respond and chased after them. Taking a turn, he saw that in the alley, Zhu Rong was slowly walking towards them.

Huai Yu coldly glared at him, Zhu Rong replied to him with a smile, “I just heard some abnormal movements from over here, so I came to take a look.”

Zhao XiaoLan panted after him, “Zhu-xiong, why are you walking so fast!”

When he saw Huai Yu, he promptly walked across Zhu Rong and outside. The moment he walked outside, he saw the area in complete disorder.

In Huai Yu’s heart there was only Ming ChangYan, so after chasing after them for a few steps, he began walking back. At this moment, Ming ChangYan was currently coming to his senses, slowly he walked in front of Ming Yue’s corpse.

He just reached his hand out when Huai Yu grabbed it, “Don’t touch. Ugly Guanyin’s cunningness is matchless, what if they dipped the blades in poison. You touching it would only cause more inconveniences.”

Ming ChangYan said, “If the blades had poison on them, then I’m afraid that I would’ve already toppled over.”

Huai Yu just now realized that Ming ChangYan’s right hand was severely injured, yet, Ming ChangYan’s face showed no unnecessary expression. He was taciturn for a long time, only hearing him faintly let out a sigh.

“I hated him too.”

After that came another peal of silence as Ming ChangYan squatted down and pulled out the blades in Ming Yue one by one. He had a myriad of anxiousness, pensively asking himself: How did it turn out this way?

Huai Yu inquired, “What do you want to do now?”

Ming ChangYan faintly said, “Bring him back to his parents to bury.”

After he finished arranging Ming Yue’s body, white fog suddenly appeared on the streets. Out came a poised, luxurious and extraordinarily temperamental woman.

The author has something to say: Looked at the comments, don’t say such words that would get censored! Scary!

Thinking of this, let’s say this again, it’s because this world is not some turning into an immortal with god magic. So when something is released, it’s not going to be retracted. There won’t be any resurrection storyline. If they’re dead, then they’re dead.

Of course, all these convenient actions more or less have somewhat more serious reasons. Later on, you might be able to find out about these reasons, but it’s up to everyone whether or not to accept them.

That is to say that it’s because of setting up the storyline that everyone has to hold onto their bento boxes*. En, every bento cannot be avoided and they weren’t there without a reason. Neither is it a calamity dropped down from Heaven to leave people unprepared, or for the purpose of being tyrannical and conveniently passing along bentos.

(TN: Chinese slag: So when an actor finishes a film, they carry their bento boxes away with them. So an extended meaning is someone is going to die and leave the scene of the play.)

This arc is pretty much finished, the next one I’m going to begin handing out sugar*. I’m more anxious than you guys to want them to begin dating!!

(TN: yeah, cute scenes between the main CP)

PS. There is no secondary CP.

A quick note from the translator: If you read this whole thing and was confused whenever I referred the Ugly Guanyin that’s because the pronouns for males and females in Mandarin all sound the same. So, I just used they and them, sorry if that confuses anyone!

Anyway, I have come to realize that translating chapters has become waaayy easier and faster than when I first started. I was almost surprised by myself by how fast this chapter came out!

Also, I’ll begin translating the author’s notes from now on (I’ve just been skipping them in the past) cause I don’t know, maybe y’all might enjoy them (゚ー゚;

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 37

Chapter 37: The Nightly Rain Blows North* – Part 1

(TN: A Chinese poem written by poet Li ShangYin. In the beginning of the poem he tells about his lonely feelings, then in the later verse he writes about the joy of the future, contrasting the loneliness of tonight. All in all, it’s about the twists and turns of emotions.)

Warning: This chapter contains some unsettling themes. Please be warned beforehand that there contains stuff that makes you so angry that you want to punch the screen. So to save your poor device, here’s a caution ahead of time. Enjoy!!

Ming ChangYan held his sword horizontally, blocking the four in front of TianQing.

The group’s footsteps stopped all at once, both frightened and surprised, “WHO!”

Ming ChangYan wasn’t smiling, “You guys are from TianQing.”

These four were all outer disciples.

Within TianQing, no one except the inner disciples had seen Ming ChangYan’s true appearance. Therefore, when these people saw him, they only thought that Ming ChangYan’s get-up was somewhat familiar, but didn’t recognize him.

However, there really were too many people in Jianghu feigning to be the Noble Gentleman. After his death, as long as someone was wearing all black and a black veil, then they would all claim to be Ming ChangYan. Especially those in the Lin’an district were particularly savage. Moreover, in recent years, TianQing practically disregarded matters in Jianghu, no one cared. As a result, these ‘Noble Gentleman’ became rampant without the slightest restraint.

The four outer disciples quickly reacted, this person was another fake Ming ChangYan.

One of them said, “Wearing that, don’t tell me that you’re the Noble Gentleman!”

Ming ChangYan said nothing. Zhao XiaoLan promptly explained, “No no! She’s a woman!”

The four all turned to look at him, but after looking left and right, they couldn’t find any aspect of Ming ChangYan that looked like a woman.

Zhao XiaoLan has always revered the TianQing sect, even if they were outer disciples he still treated them with much respect. Cupping his hands together and bowing, Zhao XiaoLan smiled, “Good friends from TianQing, where are you going?”

“Oh, we’re here as disaster relief.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Have you guys eaten yet? If not, may I invite you to lunch? We can go to the Jade restaurant for a meal at noon.”

They hesitated, “This…”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “I’ve always admired TianQing’s ShaoXia’s good looks. Me inviting you to dinner is just a small form of respect, so I hope that everyone won’t decline my offer.”

At this moment Ming ChangYan suddenly asked, “You’re here as disaster relief? What about TianQing’s inner disciples, how many came? Where’s LiMin-Jun and Zhong YuLou?”

Unexpectedly, after he said those words, the four’s expressions instantly changed.

“What Zhong YuLou?!”

“Zhong YuLou! Zhong YuLou was a fucking traitor!”

Zhao XiaoLan paused, Ming ChangYan’s voice turned cold, asking, “What did you say?”

One of them said, “You? Hahaha, if you want to dress up as the Noble Gentleman, why don’t you pretend a bit better? You don’t even know such a big affair happened at TianQing.”

Zhao XiaoLan murmured, “This, I didn’t know about this either….”

Zhao XiaoLan cared about TianQing, originally it was because he adored Ming ChangYan and everything that had to do with Ming ChangYan. On the year of his death and TianQing fell into disarray, he was heartbroken and mournful, bathing himself in his own tears, and wasn’t in the mood to waste his energy to deal with other matters. As a result, the matter of Zhong YuLou, he totally didn’t know.

They said, “Forget about it, there’s no point in talking to you guys about it. Let’s go let’s go, let’s not waste our time here.”

Ming ChangYan suddenly shot forward, his sword didn’t come out of its sheath, but he used the tip of the sword to block the person who had spoken earlier. The person immediately reacted, striking back twice in a row, but instantly realized that he wasn’t the opponent for Ming ChangYan. While striking he also retreated back, until ultimately he couldn’t retreat anymore. He was overturned onto the ground by Ming ChangYan, following which his collar was grabbed and he was pressed down on the floor.

The person who was being pressed down on the floor began to bare his fangs and inconsiderably shout, “What are you doing! Do you want to die! Murder!”

The blade of Ming ChangYan’s sword towards the other and pressed against his throat. He threatened, “Say another word and I’ll cut off that head of yours.”

The person immediately shut up.

When the remaining three saw their comrade getting beat up they quickly unsheathed their swords. When Huai Yu saw this, he hooked his foot on one of the tables holding congee, stopping them.

He gave them a cold glance.

The three looked at each other in dismay but didn’t dare to move a single step forward. Spouting, “WHO ARE YOU?!”

Huai Yu didn’t feel like responding to them.

On the other side, the outer disciple who was threatened by Ming ChangYan stammered, “You, you you you you and I have no grievances, why did you suddenly attack!”

His face suddenly turned red, “MALE AND FEMALE ARE UNEQUAL!!! GET OFF!! GET OFF!!”

Ming ChangYan refused to acknowledge him, asked, “Let me ask you, this statement that YuLou is a traitor, how did it emerge?”

When the outer disciple heard this he completely shed the blush on his face, gnashing his teeth and fuming, “How else! Of course, it’s because he allied with GuiFeng sect and caused the death of Da-shxiong!”

Ming ChangYan was silent.

The outer disciple thought that he might as well just spill the whole thing, “Who doesn’t know that Wan QianQiu was his older sister’s husband! He’s the only one in TianQing with the best relationship with GuiFeng sect! Da-shixiong was blind to regard him so highly back then, who would’ve expected him to be an ingrate!”

Ming ChangYan was just about to ask him to give him a thorough explanation, yet what they said next completely broke his rationality.

“But evil will always meet its retribution, after causing the death of so many people, in the end, he still finished without a happy ending. Humph, it truly was a well-deserved death!”

Ming ChangYan said, “What did you say?”

His hand began to tremble, when the outer disciple saw this, he immediately overthrew him and crawled up from the ground. He touched his neck and said, “You are so unreasonable, that hurt.”

Ming ChangYan asked, “He died? How did he die?”

The outer disciple’s heart skipped, spotting Ming ChangYan he saw this his complexion was deathly pale, terrified. His vigor was at a steep decline, saying, “He just, just died….”

Ming ChangYan’s breathing stopped, “Nonsense!”

The outer disciple shouted, “What’s there to talk nonsense about! If he died, then he died!”

All of a sudden, his voice came to a spontaneous stop.

Ming ChangYan tightly pursed his lips, his eyes somewhat bloodshot, firmly staring at the person. He was clutching the person’s neck again. The more strength used in his grip, the outer disciple’s face would be choked another shade of red, looking as if he was about to take his last breath.

Huai Yu grabbed his wrist, “MING CHANGYAN!”

Ming ChangYan’s gaze caused the outer disciple’s body to tremble. He didn’t even have time to try to run away when he was pushed aside by Ming ChangYan.

Huai Yu’s hand was suddenly shaken off as Ming ChangYan himself began running away. Blood and qi rushed to his heart as both his legs turned soft, his entire body strength abruptly unhitching. Only from Huai Yu promptly supporting his shoulder did he not kneel on the ground.

The outer disciple was scared to the point where his entire body shivered, “Wei-weirdo.”

The remaining three didn’t want to tangle with Ming ChangYan, taking advantage of Ming ChangYan’s immobility they urged, “Quick quick quick, let’s leave!!”

After they disappeared, the pit of Ming ChangYan’s stomach ached. He hurriedly gasped a few breaths of air, his brows firmly wrinkled together.

Huai Yu didn’t know how to talk so he could only semi-hug him while waiting for him to clear his head.

Ming ChangYan’s voice was hoarse, “Did you hear what he said.”

Huai Yu thought for a bit then nodded his head.

Ming ChangYan’s ten fingers curled into a fist, he uncurled, arriving at the verdict, “Fake.”

He abruptly raged, “Go back to the inn and find Ming Yue! XiaoLan, go back.”

Ming ChangYan slapped the table and rose up, but didn’t walk far when a person stood in his way. The man had a strong build with thick eyebrows and large eyes, precisely one of four TianQing disciples from earlier.

The person unusually said, “Da-shixiong.”

Ming ChangYan looked at him with an odd expression.

This person recognizes his appearance? Who?

“I know what really happened two years ago.”

Two years ago, Ming ChangYan fell into the Yanbo River and the news of his death was widely spread across the martial circles. The Six Great sects announced: After purging Ming ChangYan, the next step is consolidating TianQing sect.

On that day, the rain poured down hard.

As the rainstorm passed along, so did the news of Ming ChangYan’s death. As the outer disciples of TianQing finished speaking, Zhong YuLou flipped over the table, “BULLSHIT! BULLSHIT!! A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT!!!”

With his sword in hand, he brushed his sleeves and was ready to head out but was caught by LiMin-Jun, “Are you trying to court death! The Six Great Sects have already stationed themselves at the bottom of XiYue Mountain, what do you plan on doing there?!”

Zhong YuLou said, “I’m going to the Yanbo River! How could Da-shixiong die so easily! I don’t believe it, let go!”

LiMin-Jun bellowed, “What are you crying for! He died, so do you plan on dying with him! Or is it that you, Zhong YuLou, is so capable that you can go against the Six Major sects?!”

“I….”

LiMin-Jun loosened his grip, “Take YuBao and Lady Hua through the secret passageways and leave. Ming Yue, take the Common People’s Order and hide–Ming Yue, Ming Yue? Ming Yue!”

Ming Yue’s face completely lacked color, his lips pale. His hands were clenched so tightly that he wasn’t even aware that he was stopping his blood flow.

LiMin-Jun said, “You, what are you doing?”

He was distracted, his lips stammering multiple times until he quietly asked, “Da-shixiong, what happened to Da-shixiong….”

LiMin-Jun paused and waved his hand, “Nothing! They’re saying he’s dead, but does that mean he’s really dead? Or do you believe that others understand Ming ChangYan better than you guys?”

“Who is he? He’s more sly than a nine-tailed fox, it’s impossible to strip away his lives. He may have found a way to avoid this mishap. What’s there to be afraid of! Get up, right now we need to worry about ourselves. If you don’t want Da-shixiong to come back and have to collect all of your corpses then you aren’t allowed to cry! Especially you, Zhong YuLou, do you know what you look like right now! How old are you to be constantly weeping, YuBao is younger than you and he isn’t even crying!”

Zhong YuLou was somewhat convinced after hearing his words, sniffing his nose and wiped his tears. In the hearts of these teenagers, Ming ChangYan’s existence has always been like a god to them. They grew up tagging behind him like little tails and shared the same blind confidence in him. Thinking that no matter what happened, he would always resolve it accordingly. As a result, LiMin-Jun’s words somewhat placated them, calming everyone down a bit. Even Ming Yue stabilized a little.

Zhong YuLou furiously wiped his face with his sleeves, “I’m staying at TianQing to wait for Da-shixiong. Er-shixiong, the Six Major sects are right below XiYue Mountain, if all the inner disciples are gone and they attack, who’s going to keep stop them?”

LiMin-Jun scolded, “Whoever stops them it isn’t going to be you!”

Ming Yue said, “Er-shixiong, I’m staying as well.”

LiMin-Jun widened his eyes, “Fucking, you’re all turning against me aren’t you, one by one you all want to go throw your life away. Ming ChangYan’s not here so my words don’t even matter anymore do they!”

Zhong YuLou held onto his sword, “I’m staying here to wait for Da-shixiong. When he comes back how is he able to fight against the Six Major sects, my cultivation’s good, I want to help him.”

LiMin-Jun fumed, “You brat, your chicken feather of cultivation…”

He only finished half his statement when he paused.

Zhong YuLou had good innate skills and very high cultivation. Even though he was young, he had a bit of Ming ChangYan’s bearing from back when he disturbed the entire world. There are multiple sects around and numerous people with inherited talent. Compared to those people, Zhong YuLou couldn’t be outdone by them. If he continued to practice a few more years, someday he would without a doubt become a powerful master. Having Zhong YuLou stay behind and take care of TianQing, wasn’t a bad idea.

LiMin-Jun hesitated for a bit, then said, “Fine. YuLou will stay.”

Ming Yue said, “I’m staying too.”

LiMin-Jun, “What are you staying behind for? Ming Yue, don’t make things difficult.”

When he looked at Ming Yue, his heart was at a loss. Within the inner disciples in TianQing, Ming Yue this person was the most eccentric and the hardest to deal with. He was susceptible and didn’t word his paranoias, often wearing a bad complexion. Besides Ming ChangYan, everyone else including LiMin-Jun all had some restraining fear against him. LiMin-Jun could wantonly scold Zhong YuLou straight in his ear but didn’t dare to say a single harsh word to Ming Yue, afraid that the other might overthink it or even misunderstand.

Ming Yue bowed his head, “Er-shixiong thinks I’m lacking and I will hinder you if I stay, right?”

LiMin-Jun at a loss, “I have no intention of doing that.”

Ming Yue, “I want to wait here until he comes back.”

“Just let him wait.”

Having heard this, LiMin-Jun looked up and saw Xiao A-chai carrying a basket walking towards the entrance, “Young Master ChangYan treats him well and doted on him the most if there’s any tasty food or drinks, when has he never gave it to him? It’s normal for Ming Yue to want to stay if you prevented him, then you’d be a vile person. He’s grown up and has his own viewpoints, don’t worry about him like an old housewife.”

LiMin-Jun said, “Xiao A-Chai, why are you here?”

Xiao A-Chai, “After such a huge affair happened, why wouldn’t I come?”

LiMin-Jun, “Is Lady Hua still okay?”

Xiao A-Chai, “She ate her medicine and went to sleep. Before she went to sleep she even asked about Young Master ChangYan. I didn’t dare to tell her the truth or her illness might get worse from the anxiety. She has a profound friendship with Young Master ChangYan, if anything happened to the young master, how long would my lady continue to live on Earth?”

LiMin-Jun, “Ming ChangYan has always been lively and playful in nature, a rascal. I can only believe three percent of what the Six Major sects announced. Plus they haven’t found a body yet so I don’t believe he’s dead.”

Xiao A-Chai, “Heaven helps the worthy. What does Young Master Li plan on doing now?”

LiMin-Jun’s original plan was this. Initially, he was the one who stayed behind to defend TianQing in case the Six Major sects suddenly came looking for trouble. Then Ming Yue would take the Common People’s Order and leave while YuLou protected Hua YunChang whilst others evacuated. However, both Ming Yue and YuLou refused to cooperate with his plan. Now the outcome was that he had to take the Common People’s Order away and YuNan has to protect Hua YunChang.

After everything was properly arranged, on the night of that same day, LiMin-Jun changed into the clothes of a commoner and left through the secret passageways.

Before leaving, he instructed, “YuLou, no matter what, wait for Ming ChangYan to come back before making decisions. You absolutely can not act on your impulses.”

Zhong YuLou said, “I know, don’t worry, I’ll protect my fellow disciples!”

LiMin-Jun sighed, “You’ve grown up, shixiong believes in you. Ming Yue, take care as well.”

After he left, Zhong YuLou and Ming Yue exited the secret passageways. Walking together, they passed through a grove and arrived at the West Lake.

Zhong YuLou has never been with Ming Yue by himself, so at this moment he felt uncomfortable, his entire body got goosebumps. He wanted to say something to lighten the atmosphere yet he discovered that he couldn’t start a converse at all with someone who had a yin yang face*. After being at a loss of half a day, until the two climbed onto the boat, Ming Yue was the one to open his mouth first.

(TN: In case anyone forgot, it means someone holding two entirely different attitudes towards something)

“Do you think he can die?”

Zhong YuLou paused, “Who? Da-shixiong? He can’t die!”

Ming Yue ignored his response, continuing, “When I was really small, he was the one who saved me. Back then I was at the brink of death, yet he was able to save me, can he die?”

What Ming Yue was talking about was an old affair that happened many years ago. He wasn’t originally an inner disciple in TianQing, but a child Ming ChangYan had rescued from a heap of wild dogs during his travels. Back then he was half dead and barely living, at his last gasp, Ming ChangYan used a TianQing core method to save him. When he woke up, not only did he have memory loss, he also acquired a physical defect. When asked about what his surname is, where his family was, and how many people were in his family, he didn’t know.

After half a year, he gave himself the name ‘Ming Yue’ and followed after Ming ChangYan every day to learn martial arts. After Ming ChangYan taught him for two more years, a married woman came to TianQing and claimed to be Ming Yue’s mother. After investigation, it turned out it really was her. However, Ming Yue refused to go home, and in spite of his mother’s dissuading him, he persisted with his views and remained in TianQing to this day.

Zhong YuLou cut him off, “Why doesn’t your little yin yang face ever have anything pleasant to say? How could Da-shixiong die in the hands of those people!”

In the middle of the lake, the reflected full moon waved along the water surface. Ming Yue reached out to fish it out, when it went down it broke the moon’s reflection. He gripped his empty hand, his palm hollow.

Zhong YuLou’s hair stood on one end, “I already felt that you had some issues long ago. Do you have some sort of mental disability to think that you’d be able to fish up the moon!”

Ming Yue’s expression sunk, “What does this have to do with you.”

Zhong YuLou rested his head against his hands and crossed his legs, “What there to be embarrassed about? I know that you like to imitate Da-shixiong, he likes the moon, so you also like the moon, even picking a name that means the moon. Whatever, I’m not going to ridicule you.”

Ming Yue said, “Who would want the rarity of not getting ridiculed by you!”

Zhong YuLou said, “Are you sick! I’m not going to lower myself to argue with you when Da-shixiong comes back, then I’ll fight you! But don’t even think about going to Da-shixiong to play pitiful! All you know how to use this tactic, not a match for me so you go about selling you misery, humph! You rely on Da-shixiong knowing that your temperament is bad and looking after you; who doesn’t know about those little thoughts of yours, acting like you have the temper of a little lady! What a performance!”

Ming Yue’s entire complexion turned red, “Who’s selling their misery! Who’s not a match for you! Who uses these tactics! Oh, little lady? You’re more like a little lady than me! Who was the one who went down the mountain last year and caused more harm than good while also suffering a double loss while trying to trick the enemy! Who was the one who was mistaken as a woman and almost sold to a low-grade brothel! Who’s a lady! Who looks the most like a woman! Go take a look in the mirror!”

Zhong YuLou’s expression changed, clearly not expecting Ming Yue to remember his remote black history. Moreover, because he was born with a pretty face, he wasn’t called a woman any less than usual. At once, he was ashamed to anger, jumping up, “ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A FIGHT!”

Ming Yue unsheathed his sword, “If you want to fight then let’s fight! Who’s afraid of who!”

Saying this, the two unexpectedly began fighting on that small boat.

After a few strikes, the little boat couldn’t bear the heavy burden and thoroughly flipped over, causing the two aboard to flip into the water. Ming Yue choked on a mouthful of water and yelled out loud, “I don’t know how to swim…I don’t know!”

Zhong YuLou took joy in the other’s calamity, slapping the water’s surface and laughing, “Little yin yang face, do you want to know what this move is called? It’s called beating a drowning dog! Hahahahahahaha!”

Within the lake, Ming Yue gurgled a few times then stopped moving.

Zhong YuLou finished laughing, sensing that something was amiss he shouted, “Hey! Hey! Shoot, you really don’t know how to swim! That’s too shameful!”

He slammed into the water and brought Ming Yue up to shore. Ming Yue laid down for a while before he suddenly beginning to cough. Coughing out a mouthful of water, he opened his eyes and hatefully glared at Zhong YuLou.

Zhong YuLou touched his nose, “What are you looking at me for, isn’t this just because your cultivation isn’t good. Who would’ve imagined that your swimming ability isn’t that good either.”

Ming Yue said, “Zhong YuLou! You’re too annoying!”

Zhong YuLou objected, “We’re no better or worse than each other, you too, are very annoying. Oh right, not only do I think you’re annoying, everyone thinks you’re annoying.”

After falling into the water, the two both lacked the strength to fight. After they traded insults they gasped for breath and rested for a while.

Zhong YuLou said, “Hey, tomorrow, don’t you try to drag me behind.”

Ming Yue closed his eyes, “Same to you. You should worry more about yourself. Your cousin is Wan QianQiu’s wife. Since TianQing and GuiFeng sects are tearing at each other right now, why didn’t you go along with Er-shixiong’s plan and decide to stay.”

He took another breath of air and stood up. With his back facing Zhong YuLou, he looked like he was about to leave.

Before leaving, Ming Yue opened his mouth, “Do your best.”

Zhong YuLou humphed, “I’m doing great! Better than you!”

On the second day, Zhong YuLou changed clothes and made a round across the area but didn’t spot Ming Yue.

He was always keeping to himself so Zhong YuLou didn’t feel inclined to care about him, but he was afraid that he was somewhere secretly wiping his tears.

After he finished eating breakfast, Zhong YuLou sat at the empty lounge pondering over how to handle the situation.

Yesterday, he flaunted off like a hero and promised LiMin-Jun that he himself would protect TianQing sect. But now that it came to it, he didn’t have a concrete plan in mind.

The Six Major sects were already stationed at the gate of XiYue Mountain, even though they haven’t attacked it was already very frightful. Though somewhat incautious, there seemed to be a little hopelessness.

At noon, an outer disciple came three times asking TianQing sect to give a statement to GuiFeng sect, to give a statement to the martial circles, to give a statement to the cultivators of this world.

That being said, ambition is very obvious and well-known. Who in Jianghu doesn’t know that it’s because they couldn’t find the Common People’s Order with Ming ChangYan that they came to TianQing sect with an excuse to search the place? This method is nothing but a reason to wield the power of the god-like weapon. When Zhong YuLou heard this, he was angry to the point where his whole body trembled, nearly unable to restrain himself from going and slicing off the heads of those herds of hypocrites.

Although the opposing party firmly pressed on, they still gave TianQing a few days. After 4-5 days, Zhong YuLou guessed that LiMin-Jun ought to have taken the Common People’s Order and gone far away. Now, even if the Six Major came up XiYue Mountain they wouldn’t be able to obtain the Common People’s Order. Therefore, on that day, his mood somewhat relaxed a bit and he decided to go to the training grounds for the outer disciples to take a stroll. To take a look to see if his fellow disciples have been sleeping and eating well these past few days.

But just when he arrived at the training grounds, Zhong YuLou sensed that something was amiss.

One pair, two pairs, three pairs of eyes seemed to always be staring at him. The gazes were very subtle as they landed on his body, causing his entire body to feel uncomfortable.

Zhong YuLou turned around, wanting to find out who was watching him but the moment his body moved, the gazes dispersed.

He muttered at the abnormality but didn’t think much of it, strutting towards the training grounds.

This place, besides the inner sect dorms, was the place he was most familiar with. Ming ChangYan would commonly come here to review YuLou’s sword skills while also calling out the other disciples to stand at the terrace and watch so that he could be a good role model for them while also learning a thing or two.

Zhong YuLou walked about the training grounds, grabbing a disciple he asked, “Where’s Yue Yi?”

Yue Yi was a well-known figure among the outer disciples and swapped pointers with Zhong YuLou multiples times, so he was relatively familiar with them.

He casually asked them but who would’ve imagined that the little Shidi ruthlessly glared at him and swung his hand away, running away.

Zhong YuLou frowned, knitting his eyebrows, “What the hell?”

At this moment, Yue Yi appeared from behind the training grounds no longer wearing that smiling expression. Simultaneously, behind him there were about ten outer disciples with complexions of hostility.

Zhong YuLou paused before immediately smiling, “Yue Yi! I finally found you, where did all of you guys go!”

Yue Yi pursed his lips, refusing to reply.

Zhong YuLou puzzled, “Why do you look like I committed some offense towards you, what’s wrong with you?”

After a period of silence, Yue Yi said, “Zhong YuLou, what’s wrong with you? Do you even need to ask me?”

Zhong YuLou was at a loss, gloomily saying, “What you’re saying doesn’t make sense. If you still think of me as your friend, then open up to me. Did I do something to offend you?”

Finally an outer disciple couldn’t bear it anymore, “Zhong YuLou! You still have the guts to say you’re a friend! You traitor to TianQing Sect!”

Hearing this, Zhong YuLou was even more perplexed, “What traitor? What rubbish are you guys saying?”

The outer disciple, “You still want play coy? Isn’t Hua XiuYuan your older cousin? Isn’t Wan QianQiu your older cousin’s husband?”

Zhong YuLou’s expression changed.

When that person saw his change in expression, it seemed like they just got reliable evidence, loudly shouting, “Look, you guys! He’s guilty, alright! I didn’t believe it in the beginning, but now he’s reaping what he sowed!”

Zhong YuLou replied, “What do you guys want! Yue Yi, what are you doing?”

Yue Yi said, “Zhong YuLou, did you cooperate with GuiFeng sect to cause the death of Da-shixiong?”

Zhong YuLou was taken back, immediately knitting his brows tightly together, “What kind of bullshit are you spouting!”

Soon, he suddenly reacted, “Who’s spreading rumors?”

Yue Yi said, “Rumors? I’m afraid that it’s all facts. In these past few days, we all got it. Within TianQing sect, those who know about Da shi-xiong’s appearance is only the inner disciples. Out of all the inner disciples, Da-shixiong relies on you the most. Zhong YuLou, just tell us, is Wan QianQiu your relative! You, you, just what’s the point of evading.”

Zhong YuLou’s expression was deathly pale, muttering to himself, “Are you guys ill! You guys claim that I did it just because of that? Who told you it was me? Don’t get so easily provoked, Da-shixiong and I have deep gratitude towards one another so why would I betray him!”

The outer disciples continued to chatter, a line for every person.

“You still have the guts to say such words! I know that you and Da-shixiong have deep gratitude towards one another, you betrayed him, don’t you think you should go die!”

“Da-shixiong already died, you have already achieved what you wanted so why are you putting on an act in front of us.”

“I heard that Er-shixiong wanted him to leave in the beginning, except he refused. From what I see, he just wants all the inner disciples to leave before he can stay and open the door for the Six Major sects!”

“You’re right, we already figured out your plan. Zhong YuLou, I used to believe that your martial arts were outstanding, but I never thought you’d do such a downgrading affair!”

“These past few days, we’ve already figured out what kind of person you are. You should leave TianQing by yourself.”

“Out of the question! We can’t let him off cheap! In my opinion, we should have him repay his debt in blood!”

Having heard what was just said, Zhong YuLou subconsciously placed his hand on the sword hanging by his waist. However, the outer disciples with good eyesight noticed this and promptly yelled out, “Look! He’s making a move, it’s dangerous!” When these words were produced, it instantly attracted countless gazes. The crowd began to make an unnecessary racket let out a few ‘So he really was trying to kill us.’, ‘Everyone be careful!’, and so on.

Zhong YuLou retreated back a step, his heart beating in a frantic rhythm. He immediately released both his hands, defending himself, “I didn’t!”

Although he was only 17 years old, he has always been the best in cultivation in TianQing, something he was always proud of. When faced with these unpredicted circumstances, he was at a loss on what to do. Zhong YuLou really couldn’t endure the badmouthing.

“The Six Major sects are already going to attack. The reason I’m staying here is so that I can protect you guys. Let’s not have any internal strife right now. I’m innocent, if you really have problems, you guys can wait for Da-shixiong to come back to settle it!”

An outer disciple said, “Da-shixiong is already dead! Come back?! Come, let’s go fight the Six Major sects till one or the other dies! All in all, we can’t just stay inside and remain spineless cowards!”

When Zhong YuLou heard this, he quickly went to block the doors.

In order to descend the mountain, people needed to take the side doors on the training grounds. He stood above the training grounds to block everyone’s path, impatiently saying, “No! You guys are throwing your lives away if you go, I’ll protect you guys, none of you are allowed to go!”

Unexpectedly, Zhong YuLou felt a burst of pain as both his knees ached. He wasn’t in the slightest degree concerned about guarding himself with people he was on familiar terms with, therefore he was hit ferociously on the legs by one of the inner disciples. He held down the pain yet one of his legs kneeled on the ground. The person holding the rod said, “You kneel! Are you even worthy of Da-shixiong! Wanting to protect us, who knows if you’ve ganged up with the Six Major sects or not!”

Zhong YuLou shouted, “I didn’t! I’m a disciple of TianQing sect, I promised Er-shixiong to stay behind and protect TianQing!”

In the underbrush, a few dark figures abruptly jumped out. Zhong YuLou bore the pain to take a look to realize that they were a few that already took the lead from the sects below the mountain. The TianQing mountain is steep so it was difficult for one to climb up, but there will always be the few who succeed. Zhong YuLou quickly pushed aside a few outer disciples and took care of them.

He sheathed his sword and said, “It’s dangerous below the mountain, you guys have already witnessed it, there are already people making their way up. If you guys continue to not listen to me, how am I going to explain to Da-shixiong in case something happens?”

“What hypocrisy, who would listen to your nonsense! You want to protect us, why not try protecting yourself first!”

The pounding of the outer disciple’s heartbeats echoed, evident that they were frightened by the sudden surprise attack just now. If it wasn’t for Zhong YuLou disposing of them just now, a few of the outer disciples would have already faced some casualties.

“You can’t say for sure that you weren’t the one who instructed them to come up here, what are you still pretending for!”

Zhong YuLou’s anger reached his head, yet he tried to be as gentle as he could, “Is it possible for you guys to start making some sense.”

(TN: These slimy motherfuckers. You better believe I’m going to beat the shit out of them all. Okay here’s my warning again cause it’s gonna get kinda ugly and yeah I cried translating this)

Suddenly an outer disciple raised his arm and with him unprepared, the rod landed another hit. Zhong YuLou didn’t have any time to deal with the hit causing him to kneel on the ground.

“Get out of my way! We’re going to fight to the death with the Six Major sects. If you dare stop us, then you’re a traitor!”

The hand he was using to grasp the rod was shaking. After he hit Zhong YuLou, his heart unexpectedly felt a bit astonished and delighted.

He thought: I hit Zhong YuLou, haha, I hit him! I always thought he was displeasing to the eye, always thinking that he’s so strong. So what his innate talent was a bit better, his cultivation a bit better, and he looks a bit prettier. Now isn’t it him who’s kneeling in front of me, not retaliating in the least!

Yue Yi somewhat couldn’t bear this, exclaiming, “What are you hitting him for! Granted that even if he’s a traitor, it’s not up to use to discipline him, you–”

Unfortunately, Yue Yi’s feeble shout was soon drowned out in the aggravated anger.

When Zhong YuLou got over the pain, he thought: Disciples under the same sect attacking each other. If I retaliate, wouldn’t it violate the task that Er-shixiong assigned me?

After clenching his teeth, he thought again: It’s only a few beatings, it’ll pass after enduring it for a bit. The Six Major sects are currently watching us like hawks, we mustn’t have any internal strife at this moment. When they’re willing to listen to me talk, then I’ll talk.

After bearing it for a while, he made up his mind and mindlessly thought: If only Da-shixiong was here right now. I usually receive people’s respect, now that he’s gone, to be unable to fix such a small trivial matter. Anyhow, I definitely won’t cause him to lose face.

Zhong YuLou was always finicky and loved to cry, but at this moment while TianQing was in distress, he didn’t cry or make noise and straightened his back. Within a small piece of trials and hardships in TianQing, he held up a tiny portion of the sky.

Except, he overlooked the malice that the outer disciples had on him. This beating was unexpectedly vicious.

“Good hit! Zhong YuLou, you dare to strike back!”

“You still dare to strike back? Us hitting him is for Da-shixiong to vent his resentment!”

“Exactly! I’m seriously so angry, Da-shixiong treats him so well yet he never thought about repaying the kindness but instead raised a ruthless mind!”

“Let him kowtow! Let him apologize to Da-shixiong!”

Zhong YuLou supported his body and wanted to stand up and retort. However, his body wobbled and suddenly he was hit again by the rod on his head. Without warning, Zhong YuLou only felt white flash in front of his eyes, his head buzzing, and his eyes being muddled by the thick flow of blood down his face causing his line of sight to become fuzzy.

The pain on his body was without an end. He took in a hissing breath and replied, “I didn’t, I didn’t do it, you guys are saying nonsense!”

“You still dare to talk! Today, we’re going to beat you till you acknowledge your mistake! Are you going to get out of our way!” One person bellowed, “Let him kneel! Kneel!”

“Right, take the jade pendant from around his waist. He’s not fit to wear it!”

Zhong YuLou’s entire body jolted, wanting to take back the jade pendant that was on his waist.

“No, no! That’s something Da-shixiong gave me, he gifted it to me!”

A foot firmly stepped on his shoulder, and the jade pendant was snatched away from his hands.

One person said, “Guys listen to this ‘Da-shixiong gave it to me’, so proud of himself wanting to flaunt it off! Humph, throw it on the ground and break it, what qualifications does this person have to get stuff from Da-shixiong!”

He raised his hand high and ferociously threw the jade pendant on the floor. The shattering sound echoed as the jade pendant cracked into pieces.

Zhong YuLou’s pupils shrank and he clenched his teeth, “You guys, you guys are insane!” He finally realized that these groups of outer disciple’s hatred was never that simple. When he wanted to escape, he once again hit to the ground by that rod. Zhong YuLou’s entire back was ripped apart, gasping for breath, he fell straight to the ground.

The person holding the rod said, “Hey, it seems like he’s not hitting back.”

“Not hitting back….not hitting back is good! Didn’t he claim to be protecting us, why would he hit back! Plus, plus does he have the face to retaliate!”

“In short, if he doesn’t get out of the way, then hit! He’s asking for it!”

“Good words, from the looks of it, it’s because he ganged together with the other sects that he doesn’t want us to go down the mountain! You can’t say for sure that after we ascend the mountain that he’ll expose everything! This traitor, his mind’s actually pretty profound, still trying to act pitiful over here!”

At first it was one person, immediately following after seeing Zhong YuLou not retaliating, they all decided that it was because he had a guilty conscience, his heart ashamed; which is why he didn’t fight back. As a result, they swarmed around him.

Everyone shuddered and felt strange. Zhong YuLou has always been someone you can reach out for but never touch. No matter how good his innate talent, cultivation, feelings or appearances were, they were all disciples of TianQing sect. He was born with good luck and was always the revered leader that people would group around. Now he was like a damned dog, laying on top of the training grounds and facing humiliation. How delighted! How to vent their anger!

It turns out that Zhong YuLou was a vile person! What’s so terrific about him! The outer disciples faced each other with rods thought that even dragging Zhong YuLou from the heavenly altar was not enough. They still had to stamp him into the mud, kick into a muddy gutter, then give him a few resolute kicks.

He rigidly held on and from his mouth came, “Don’t go down the mountain, don’t go out!”

Under the rods, Zhong YuLou’s flesh body was merely that of a youngster of 17 almost 18 years old. He wasn’t able to support himself up much longer and he began to feel more and more weak. Originally he was still able to justify himself with a few ‘I didn’t betray,’ ‘Don’t have internal strife,’ ‘Don’t go out.’ In the end, the pain was almost unbearable to the point where he was delirious and he could only mumble a, “It hurts.”

My head hurts, my hand hurts, my back hurts, my waist hurts.

Wherever the rod was ruthless, wherever it hurts.

Zhong YuLou’s consciousness was muffled. Absent-mindedly, he seemed to see Ming ChangYan slowly walking towards him.

“I’m sorry….I’m sorry….I didn’t do a good job…..”

“Da-shixiong…save me…..save me…”

The blood spread throughout the training grounds. Just as someone was carefreely beating away, he abruptly stopped, “Wait, why isn’t he moving?”

Another person doubted, “Could it be that they passed out? Get a bucket of water and pour it on him!”

“No, no! He stopped breathing! Zhong, Zhong YuLou stopped breathing!”

When those words fell, everyone went into an uproar.

Everyone threw away their rods, “It wasn’t me, I, I only hit him twice!”

Everyone looked at each other in dismay. It was like each one of them scalded their hands, throwing the rods aside, “It wasn’t me!”

“Wasn’t me either!”

They swallowed their saliva. On the training grounds, it was completely silent. Only the youngster’s body was covered in blood, his complexion pale with distinct tear stains. The anger severed off.

Suddenly there came a muffled thunder, brewing for gloomy weather as the rain was on the verge of pouring down.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

Outside the training grounds, a female priest sat on a tree, her hand on hovering over her mouth and laughing.

Below the tree, Ming Yue’s complexion lacked color, his expression empty.

The female priest had both her legs spread out, smiling, “How was this good show that I brought you to see? Is it just as you intended it to be?”

The outer disciples were alarmed, asking, “Who are you!”

The female priest’s expression suddenly changed and said, “Don’t speak out of your turn.”

The outer disciple who had spoken suddenly paused. Abruptly, his throat produced a ‘splurt’ and was sliced open with a sharp and slender blade, the scarlet blood instantly splashing straight onto the disciple beside him. That disciple’s lips moved, following which they began screeching at the top of their lungs.

The female priest said, “You’re also quite noisy.”

As those words fell, the screeching disciple became like the other disciple. With a single swing, he died without an intact corpse. The female priest said, “You did well, it seems that you’re not a good for nothing. Don’t worry, if you’re unable to remain at TianQing then ‘we’ can help shelter you.”

Upon seeing this, Ming Yue finally woke up, stammering, “I, I didn’t…”

The female priest changed her posture and threw the blade around for fun. Taking a sip of wine, she said, “You didn’t? You didn’t do what? Was this play not pleasurable for you, you still haven’t seen enough?”

Ming Yue retreated back a step, leaning against a tree he began trembling from head to toe, “I didn’t, I didn’t mean to kill him…”

Hearing this, the female priest let out a hearty laugh, “Didn’t you hate him to death? What, he usually doesn’t look up to you but when he’s beaten to death by your outer disciples then you’re beginning to feel remorse?”

“It wasn’t me…It wasn’t me!! It wasn’t, it wasn’t me!!”

The female priest said, “It wasn’t you? Aren’t you the one who urge them that Zhong YuLou was a traitor, or is it….because you were the one who brought your Da-shixiong’s little sister to GuiFeng mountain?”

Ming Yue’s breath stopped and suddenly looked towards her. He had an expression of bewilderment and loathing, “You said that nothing would happen! You said that we were just going to teach him a lesson! You didn’t, you didn’t tell me he would die!”

He nearly collapsed, “It was you, it was you who used my family to threaten me!!”

The female priest faintly smiled, “I used that to trick you, haha, sorry! But you’re still the one who caused his death, oh what should we do, there is no medicine in this world to cure regret. Ming ChangYan’s dead, what are you afraid of? Don’t tell me that you’re afraid of them finding you troublesome?”

When she finished, she was still smiling when she gave a fierce sweep of the outer disciples on the field.

“Regardless whether it’s Ming ChangYan or Zhong YuLou, they can’t stay alive at TianQing. Little Ming Yue, you ought to feel glad at your indifference, you picked up someone’s life.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll help you sort things out. The dead will never bother others.”

Ming Yue’s entire body jolted. A single drop of rain fell and landed between his eyebrows.

Two drops, three drops of rain mixed together with the blood. Miserable shrieking and calls for help poured through his ears.

Ming Yue suddenly let out a blood-curdling scream and ran towards the training grounds. Stepping over the corpses of the outer disciples, in a pool of blood, Zhong YuLou silently laid still.

He stood in a daze and pursed his lips. He picked up the jade pendant that was thrown on the ground.

Ming Yue crouched by his body with both his hands trembling, appearing as if he wanted to glue the parts of the jade pendant together and give it back to Zhong YuLou.

“I didn’t do it on purpose….I didn’t do it on purpose…I, I didn’t do it on purpose….”

The moment the jade pendant that received thousands of hardships was placed on top of Zhong YuLou’s body, it cracked into pieces.

Chapter 36: The God of the Yellow River Takes a Wife – Part 6

Translated by: Ritpoppy

In a dark and windy night, Ming ChangYan decided to dig a grave.

Diverging away from the crowd, he wore black from head to toe. Standing by the doorway, he raised his head looking for someone before the person he was looking for finally arrived.

As soon as Huai Yu arrived, Ming ChangYan was bewildered, “Why didn’t you change clothes!”

Huai Yu was puzzled, “Why do I have to change clothes?”

Ming ChangYan, “Wow, Young Prime Minister. What we’re doing is some shady business and you’re wearing gold. Being so eye-catching probably isn’t too good.”

Yet Huai Yu simply marveled, “Why isn’t it good?”

When Ming ChangYan saw his persistence, extremely confident in his own cultivation, somewhat like the demeanor of his past self, he felt admired, “Fine fine fine, I won’t waste my time with you. Let’s go.”

The Little Mouth Valley was located just west of the foot of a mountain in GuangLing. Between two mountains there was a small hole just like a mouth, thus giving it that name.

Ming ChangYan’s injury still hadn’t fully healed yet. He still took his medicine every day and nursed his health, his cultivation really seemed to have recovered 10 to 20 percent. But as soon as it turned nighttime, his vision was still no good.

But Ming ChangYan’s five senses were still very good. Although he couldn’t see the road in front of him, he relied on the wind blowing on the grass to determine the obstacles ahead of him.

After walking for a while, if not for the roads becoming more windy, when Ming ChangYan tripped on a small stone and he stumbled a bit, Huai Yu wouldn’t have discovered that his eyesight was poor.

Huai Yu stopped and grabbed onto his arm, supporting him up.

Noticing he stopped, Ming ChangYan thought that they arrived, tilting his head up to ask, “We’re here so soon?”

Huai Yu, “Not yet. Can you not see?”

Ming ChangYan was a bit stunned, smiling, “So what, aren’t I still walking just fine?”

Huai Yu, “Walking just fine?”

Ming ChangYan rubbed his nose, “With so many roads to cover at night, it’s easy to lose your footing. It’s fine, you don’t need to care about that. My eyes are just blind for a while, it won’t interfere with what we’re doing. Otherwise, you can light a few more torches for me to use as light.”

Huai Yu was silent for a short period of time, “Have you always been like this?”

Ming ChangYan, “Occasionally. It’s been pretty good these days, and isn’t that all because of Dage’s care?”

Stopping, he giggled, “Could it be that you’re scared of the dark? Don’t worry, if you’re afraid you can scoot a bit closer to me. Back then Yi Yue was also afraid of the dark but still loved to listen to scary stories. After hearing them, she’d beg me to go pick fruits with her in the middle of the night, then along the way, we’d bump into Lady Hua–”

“Oh I forgot, you’ve never met her before. Just cause she looks sick right now, in our childhood days, horse-riding, archery, she was better than me at all those things, just like a juvillene youth–where was I? We’d bump into her halfway and Yi Yue would make her come to pick fruit together. My sister was always the most cunning, when it was just two of us would always walk in a line, and when it came to the three of us we’d always walk in a row. Just like you right now, are you afraid of ghosts?”

Huai Yu’s footsteps stopped, humming, “Not afraid.”

While the two were chatting, they had already arrived at the Little Mouth Valley.

In a very deep gorge, there lay coffins piled in disorder. It had been raining earlier and some of the lids weren’t fully closed. The coffin lids that hadn’t been sealed shut with nails were already beginning to roll off to the side.

Ming ChangYan held onto his torch, about to jump down. However, before he was about to jump, his collar was firmly grasped by Huai Yu.

“You’re just going to jump down like this? What if there’s something down there? We’re in a desolate mountain range outside the city, granted that even if there weren’t ghosts, there’d still be wild beasts. You have no source of protection, how are you able to escape anyone’s grasp?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Don’t worry, I have my own methods. There’s a lot of corpse energies down there, regular animals wouldn’t dare go down.

Huai Yu’s grip tightened on his collar, “No.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Fine, if you won’t let me go down, then I’ll look at it from above.”

He continued, “Only, my eyesight isn’t very good. Little Huai Yu, help me take a look.”

Huai Yu asked, “Look at what?”

Ming ChangYan, “Naturally it’s to look to see if there are corpses in the coffins!”

Huai Yu took the torch and shone it below. The flame was too faint so you really couldn’t see it very well. However, in the next moment, Huai Yu took out a night pearl from his sleeves. He untied the black cloth around it, rays of light shined out in a split second. Not waiting on Ming ChangYan to begin talking, Huai Yu lifted his hand and threw the pearl straight down.

“HUAI YU!!”

Huai Yu’s hastily grabbed onto the Ming ChangYan that was about to jump down.

He said, “Didn’t you say you couldn’t see very clearly? Isn’t it brighter now?”

Ming ChangYan sorrowfully turned his head around, nearly writing the words “prodigal” on his face.

Huai Yu knitted his eyebrows together, “The coffin’s empty.”

When he said those words, it scattered away the pain Ming ChangYan was feeling. With the night pearl’s light, the two were able to clearly see: In the coffin which has been washed away by water, there was not a body in sight.

Ming ChangYan exclaimed, “Just as expected.”

Huai Yu hummed, then said, “When did you suspect this?”

Ming ChangYan clapped his hands, “If it wasn’t an epidemic, then it’s a human disaster. If that’s the case then why would someone plant poison, and why would they put on the facade that it’s all caused by an epidemic? I thought for a while then came to a conclusion, they needed dead bodies or just humans in general. Only in an epidemic would there be a lot of dead bodies, and even if the bodies disappeared, no one would question it. It’s just that, why would they need dead bodies?”

Huai Yu looked at him. Ming ChangYan pondered for a long time, then suddenly realized, “Could it be that they’re missing a player*?”

(TN: “三缺一”; three missing one. In mahjong, there needs to be four people playing. But if you’re missing a person, then the three are required to just play together. The term means you’re missing a player in your game.)

“Ming ChangYan, is this interesting!”

Ming ChangYan laughed out loud, “Not interesting not interesting, the atmosphere was too tense so I made a joke.”

He said, “Now that we understand the situation, it’s going to be easier to handle. Since this isn’t an epidemic, but instead a poisoning, then there’s definitely a cure. Little Huai Yu, I’m going to have to bother you again.”

Before leaving, Ming ChangYan’s heart was still sore, wanting to crawl in to pick up the night pearl. Of course, he was unsuccessful and dragged back to the inn by the collar by Huai Yu.

Six days later, one of the epidemic patients who were voluntarily cured by Huai Yu no longer had any more physical problems. As he got out of bed, he burst into tears, kowtowing to Huai Yu multiple times in a row. Ming ChangYan was afraid that just escaping from the gates of Hell, if he continued to kowtow, he’d have to take a trip back. They quickly called someone over to take him away.

After the person left, Ming ChangYan sat down, “How is it? Has there been any answers these past few days?”

Huai Yu poured a cup of tea, replying, “None. This poison is unheard of, no one in the Central Plains has seen it before.”

Ming ChangYan, “Two years ago, GuiFeng sect died to this type of poison. What kind of poison is this, to be able to harden the body of the victim?”

Huai Yu said, “I’ve never heard of one before.”

Ming ChangYan was pensive, standing by the window calmly thinking for a moment. Suddenly his figure moved and he flipped out of the window.

Huai Yu’s cup of tea flipped over. After the other jumped out of the window for the second time, he was finally angry enough to open his mouth and begin cursing. Except after he searched in his head for a long time, no swear words came to mind. After all, up to this point, no one has ever taught him how to swear and the most important fact was that no one has ever made him angry enough to begin swearing. As a result, he pursed his lips over and over again, but truly couldn’t let anything out, so he only harshly yell out a, “MING CHANGYAN!”

Ming ChangYan this person, regardless of whether he was jumping out of a window, a building, a wall, or even jumping into a river, it was all with the same posture. No matter how seriously he injured himself or how slim chances of survival were, he didn’t care. In brief, it was always jump down then talk.

The moment he landed, Ming ChangYan pulled out a sword that he purchased at a weaponry a day before yesterday.

He noticed a person, a young man clad in white robes. The person noticed that he harbored ill intent, the moment he was met with the other’s sword, the two of them were entangled without another word said.

The swordsmanship Ming ChangYan was using was precisely that of TianQing’s sect’s six sword techniques. The opposite party’s sword technique was exactly the same as his, he used his strength and with a wave of his sword he knocked back Ming ChangYan. He yelled, “Who are you! Why do you know TianQing’s six sword techniques!”

“How could the person who taught you TianQing’s six sword techniques, not know it.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Ming Yue, keep a steady grip on your sword. My next strike is going to take your life.”

Ming Yue’s complexion was deathly pale. At first, it was shock, then it was delight, yet with Ming ChangYan’s later statement, it turned into sadness. His expression shifted everywhere, before he was ultimately blank, “Da-shixiong, Da-shixiong, you didn’t die, alive, I….”

While his expression was shifting irregularly, a sword penetrated his shoulder. Ming Yue suddenly paused, spitting out a mouthful of blood.

Ming ChangYan pulled out the sword. Without any support, Ming Yue quickly kneeled on the ground.

“Steady your sword!”

Ming Yue covered his shoulder, blood spilling out from his mouth, vacantly saying, “Da-shixiong, why are you hitting me?”

Ming ChangYan clutched onto his neck and pulled him up. His expression was filled with grief and hatred, “You killed Yi Yue.”

Ming Yue opened his eyes and suddenly began to struggle, “What, what? I didn’t…I didn’t! Da-shixiong, I can’t understand what you’re saying! My shoulder hurts, Da-shixiong, it hurts!”

Ming ChangYan’s breath abruptly stopped, somewhat loosening his strength a bit. Ming Yue went into a wild coughing fit, wiping away the tears on his face, “Da-shixiong, I didn’t. You, you’re still alive. Why didn’t you come home, why didn’t you come back to TianQing …”

Ming ChangYan, “Shut up,” he pressed on his temples, then asked, “If you weren’t the one who gave Yi Yue to Wan QianQiu, then who else?”

Ming Yue’s body shook as he got up, “Da-shixiong, I didn’t.” After a while he suddenly said, “Shixiong, I’m hungry.”

He seemed to be at a loss like he truly didn’t understand why Ming ChangYan was unexpectedly hitting him or whether or not he’s done any misdeeds.

Ming ChangYan tightly clenched his fist then loosened it, grinding his teeth he said, “First eat. After you’re finished eating, I have things to ask you. If you dare to say a single lie towards me, I’m not going to be courteous.”

Ming Yue covered his shoulder that was dripping with blood. Every time Ming ChangYan took a step, he would follow a step. He was unable to hold onto his sword so he hugged it to his chest, miserably asking Ming ChangYan if he could hold onto it for him.

He took Ming Yue’s sword and dragged him to a nearby pharmacy. He absent-mindedly bought some medicine to stop the bleeding and smeared it on the other’s shoulder. Ming Yue didn’t dare to speak and merely bowed his head.

Just as they exited the pharmacy, they just so happened to run into Huai Yu.

Huai Yu’s expression wasn’t good, Ming ChangYan waved his hand, “Find a restaurant, I have questions I need to ask him.”

After eating, the finger Ming ChangYan was tapping on the table finally halted.

Ming Yue set down his chopsticks. Ming ChangYan said, “Does your shoulder still hurt?”

Ming Yue shook his head, “Da-shixiong, I didn’t kill Yi Yue”

Ming ChangYan, “Reason, explanation.”

Ming Yue said, “If I didn’t do then I didn’t do it, why are you doubting me? Da-shixiong, my life is something that you saved, if you think I was the one who did it, then you can take it back. I won’t question you at all.”

Ming ChangYan asked, “Jade pendant. The jade pendant that I gave you, where did it go?”

Ming Yue, “I don’t know. After you jumped into the Yanbo River, I never saw it again.”

Ming ChangYan wasn’t able to ask a reason why and had a splitting headache. It’s true that Little Bell would never lie to him, yet Ming Yue’s words didn’t seem like lies either. He simply changed the to another question, “Are you the only one here? Where’s everyone else? Where’s YuLou?”

Ming Yue’s expression turned blank.

Ming ChangYan set down his teacup and questioned, “He didn’t come?”

Ming Yue paused for a bit, then slowly said, “He didn’t come. I only came by myself this time.”

Ming ChangYan didn’t seem to have any suspicions, so he took a sip of the tea and continued interrogating, “Why did you come to GuangLing?”

Ming Yue said, “Every sect in Jianghu sent disciples to come to GuangLing, naturally TianQing cannot remain indifferent.”

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan seemed to understand. Most of the disciples sent by the other sects to investigate this matter were outer disciples. However TianQing received heavy damage two years ago, and with Ming ChangYan drowning in the Yanbo River, most of the outer disciples should’ve already packed their bags and rushed to a better future. Therefore, with this epidemic, they could only call an inner disciple like Ming Yue to come.

Ming ChangYan asked a few more questions, took Ming Yue into custody and arranged for him to stay in the inn.

Huai Yu asked him, “What do you want to do?”

Ming ChangYan, “Ask two people with good martial arts to keep an eye on him. The truth still hasn’t come to light, he cannot leave.”

Huai Yu supported him with his hand, “You should take your medicine.”

Ming ChangYan sighed, “Look at me, do I look like I’m in the mood to take medicine?”

Huai Yu slowly and strictly said, “If you don’t want to eat it, then I’m going to pour the medicine into you. If you think you can beat me, then you can try.”

Ming ChangYan irritatedly exclaimed, “Cheeky.”

Huai Yu coldly humphed. Ming ChangYan knew what he was going to say next, promptly saying, “Right, it’s my fault, I forgot again. You’re my Ge, my good gege, gege, okay?”

Walking out of the inn, Ming ChangYan said, “I’m going to interrogate those brides again.”

Huai Yu added, “I’m coming with you.”

As they passed through the central main street, they bumped into the Zhao XiaoLan and Zhu Rong working for disaster relief. The two of them were both in a temporarily made stand while giving out congee. However, while others filled each bowl one at a time, the impatient Zhao XiaoLan piled multiple congee plates on a tray, wobbling while he walked. Looking over, someone might have mistaken him as someone performing on the streets.

Just as expected, Zhao XiaoLan didn’t even take more than two steps when his body when askew. His body along with the congee, was about to fall on the ground.

At this moment, a hand came in and grabbed onto Zhao XiaoLan’s back collar. The man was steadied, but the congee together with the bowls all slipped out. The victims of the epidemic watched as the bowls completely shattered on the ground, sucking in a cold breath of air, their heart hurt, making them feel very remorseful.

“Zhu-xiong, thank you so much!”

“Do you really have to finish carrying them all at once?”

Zhao XiaoLan stationed his body, “Isn’t it faster this way!”

Zhu Rong helped him separate a few bowls onto the table, “It’s dangerous. Don’t do it next time.”

Zhao XiaoLan laughed out loud, “What’s there to be afraid of, I’m a man! Only after a few tumbles can you mature! Plus, Zhu-xiong will be there to help me.”

Zhu Rong smiled at him, his eyes curving. He turned around, the tiny bells on his body softly jingling, “There will be times I won’t be there, perhaps, you could’ve fallen on the ground just now.”

Zhao XiaoLan waved his hand, assessing, “Nonsense!”

At this moment, Ming ChangYan shouted, “XiaoLan-xiong!”

The hand Zhao XiaoLan was using to scoop congee stopped, replying, “Yan-jiejie!” He turned around his face, “Zhu-xiong, take care of this side for me, I’ll be back soon.” While saying this, Zhao XiaoLan began running towards Ming ChangYan.

Zhao XiaoLan said, “How, Yan-jiejie, how do have the time to come out!”

Ming ChangYan said, “Just coming to take a look. What’s that fragrance on your body, smells nice.”

Zhao XiaoLan took a small box of rouge from his bosom, “I just bought it. Do you want it, I’ll give you a box. GuangLing’s production of rouge is very good, I bought some to bring back.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Who are you buying it for? A close female friend?”

Zhao XiaoLan’s face flushed red, “Regular, regular friend!”

The two were still conversing when from the corner came the voices to two people chatting, “Back then when this sort of thing occurred, XiaoHan Temple always sent in a large number of people, why did they send fewer people in this time?”

“Aren’t they just at that overhauled HuaTing Shrine. They all went there, who would come here and care about the life or death of the people?”

“Humph, all XiaoHan Temple knows how to do it put on an act. Feigning kindness!”

Zhao XiaoLan suddenly said, “Yan-jiejie, TianQing sect’s school uniform!”

Turning around to take a look, on a distant alley, the four people speaking were wearing TianQing sect’s school uniform. On the outside, they wore a small vest while the clothes were embroidered with the yin yang ba gua. Two strips of silk fell down from the cuffs that floated in the air when they walked. The artistry of this uniform came entirely from the aesthetics of Ming ChangYan.

Ming ChangYan was frozen.

TianQing sect didn’t just send Ming Yue?

Huai Yu instantly reacted, saying, “Ming Yue is lying.”

The next chapter is going to take a while (it’s the 10,000+ chapter I mentioned earlier). Also, my finals are coming up, so you probably won’t be getting a chapter till like the last week of the month, so I apologize. Because of that, I’m going to wish y’all a Merry Christmas beforehand with a piece of fanart!

http://moryas.lofter.com/post/1d339c72_12d20eb31

I’ve been looking back at previous chapters and cringing at my horrible translations, so I’m probably going to edit this whole novel after I’ve finished translating.

Also, I’ve got a bone to pick, so I realized that the author revised a few chapters of this novel a bit. This is a bad thing for me cause she may have added additional info that wasn’t there before. So I’ve just decided to use the old version (why? cause I really don’t want to reread 30ish chapters then edit the 30ish chapters, that’s 155,410 words)

This has been really stressing me cause I don’t know if it’s vital info that the author added or just like small stuff. So I hope you guys can be lenient with me.

In the future, I’ll make separate posts on the revised chapters (or someone else can I don’t care) but for now, you can enjoy this novel from when I read it, AKA the old version.

Okay, have a great holiday!

Chapter 35: The God of the Yellow River Takes a Wife – Part 5

Translated by: Ritpoppy

Huai Yu said, “When did you find out.”

Ming ChangYan, “I found out when I jumped on the boat. If you don’t experience this kind of thing yourself, you truly wouldn’t be able to discover it. No wonder the people on the riverbank didn’t sense anything wrong with it. If not for either a space or a mechanism in the middle, how would the water be able to flow towards the middle.”

Huai Yu held out his hand and attempted to push open the two stone doors.

Ming ChangYan asked, “Why did you fall down as well?”

Huai Yu shined the fire at the stone doors and replied, “How come you ask so many why’s.”

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan’s heart felt happy, saying, “Don’t be embarrassed. You came down because you were worried about me, weren’t you? Having you as a friend is pretty great, I didn’t become friends with the wrong person.”

Huai Yu’s paused his hands, “I found the entrance.”

The stone doors let out a thunderous sound as it gradually pushed opened.

Ming ChangYan said, “Something’s wrong. How were you able to open the doors? If there is a way, how come it made such a loud sound?”

Huai Yu answered, “The stone doors don’t have a key, you can only push it open.”

Ming ChangYan was alarmed, “You just directly pushed it open?”

He was astonished, coming back to reality, he said, “So fierce, Little Huai Yu. This stone door weighs about a thousand pounds and you pushed it open simply because you said so. It seems that even if this place was to be discovered by someone, it didn’t plan to allow an ordinary person to just casually push the door open. Frankly, this isn’t something accomplishable by human standards. Of course, the old me would’ve been able to easily do this kind of thing.”

Huai Yu was too tired to pay attention to him, continuing to move forward. Ming ChangYan caught up to him, “No matter how much I praise you, you won’t talk to me. Hello? Huai Yu! Don’t walk so fast, I’m short now so my steps are small. I’m disguising myself as a woman right now, so I should at least be considered half woman. If this is how you treat someone of the opposite gender, there won’t be any lady out there who’d want to spend their days with you.”

The torch’s flames were still too small, as Huai Yu moved forwards, he could only see faintly in front of him. In front of them displayed a simple house. Ming ChangYan took the candle and used a finger to wipe at the table. He twirled his finger, “There’s no dust, someone’s been living here.”

He laughed, “Tell me, who do you think would live here? Don’t tell me that it’s really He Bo? Then this He Bo must be very poor and sick at heart to live here where there’s no daylight while wasting no time to take a wife!”

Huai Yu said, “Stop moving. There are voices ahead.”

Ming ChangYan’s footsteps stopped, sure enough, a soft sob could be heard.

Not doing what the other wanted, Ming ChangYan passed through the corridor at once towards where the sound was originating from. Unexpectedly he was only midway there when a machete came straight for his face. Ming ChangYan leaned to the side, the machete falling in front of him. If he had missed half a step, he would’ve lost his life.

Missing its target, the person gripping the machete lifted the blade to strike again. Ming ChangYan took out a long needle, colliding with the blade, producing a very sharp sound.

Ming ChangYan pushed the needle forwards while his right hand wrestled over the control of the blade. The machete made of pure silver was stopped by two of his fingers. The person exerts some force to try moving it, but the blade remained motionless. He simply abandoned the blade and used his bare arms to strike back. Ming ChangYan gently tossed the blade. It made a few revolutions in the air before he caught it in one hand and swung it down.

Huai Yu said, “Wait, keep him alive.”

At his voice, he rapidly changed the direction of the blade to face the handle. Ming ChangYan scored a firm hit on his shoulder, which caused the person’s whole body to shake before falling to the ground.

Ming ChangYan gave the person a few kicks, bringing the fire towards his face, he was able to barely see that this person was a middle-aged, bearded man. His hair was bound up with a black rope and was wearing three silver hoops on his ears.

He was flabbergasted, “You’re from the HaiKou Gang?”

Huai Yu slightly rose his eyebrows.

Ming ChangYan pondered, “How can friends from the HaiKou Gang be here?”

The person asked, “Who are you?”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “Who I am isn’t important. Let me ask you, where did you take that girl?”

This man’s entire body was covered in a fishy stench due to the river, on his clothes, there were coils of water plants, clearly, someone who’d just came out of a river. The male silhouette that Ming ChangYan had seen earlier resembled the figure of this man. Therefore the person who took the bride away is more or less the man in front of him.

The person from the HaiKou Gang responded, “No comment!”

Ming ChangYan clutched his neck, forcing him to allow air out, but not in. His entire face turned red while his eye sockets were almost splitting.

He smiled, “I respect the Leader Yan of the HaiKou Gang as a strong and courageous person, someone who handles things straightforwardly and upright, so I’ll be a little lenient. I hope this friend will be sensible not to idle my patience away. Where is she?”

All of a sudden the man closed his mouth shut. Huai Yu noticed that something was amiss and quickly pulled Ming ChangYan into his embrace. Just as expected, just moments later black poisonous fluid squirted out of his mouth. As it came into contact with the wall, the stone rotted until there was almost nothing left. Ming ChangYan was apprehensive, “Such a fierce poison.”

Taking another look, the man on the floor’s mouth was already rotting away, taking a final breath before dying.

“He actually killed himself.”

Huai Yu said, “Suicide means that there’s someone behind all of this. Moreover, this person is someone that absolutely cannot be named.”

Ming ChangYan rubbed his chin, “Who is someone that absolutely cannot be named? He’s wearing three ear hoops so he truly is a disciple of the HaiKou Gang. Besides Leader Yan behind his back, who else is there?”

Huai Yu stated, “If it was the leader of the HaiKou Gang, he wouldn’t be inclined to commit suicide.”

Ming ChangYan said, “You mean it could’ve been someone else?!”

Huai Yu replied, “Let’s continue, there are voices up ahead. He just took the bride away, there’s no way he could’ve moved her far in such a short amount of time. Besides, this person already knew that we were following closely behind him, that’s why he stood here waiting for us to mount a sneak attack.”

Ming ChangYan laughed out loud, “Well didn’t he just steal a chicken but lost the rice to lure it*! This ShaoXia is number one under this world, wasn’t he just courting death!”

(TN: Trying to gain an advantage but only ending up worse off.)

Huai Yu glanced at him. Ming ChangYan coughed and promptly said, “Ok ok ok, former number one. Right now it’s you, you! You’re the world’s number one’s Da-ge!”

Huai Yu humphed and evaluated, “Eloquent.”

Crossing through the corridor, it turned out at the end of it was a naturally formed karst cave. The moment Ming ChangYan stepped inside he was shocked with the horrible sight laid before him. Above the cave there suspended countless cages, with a girl locked in every one of them.

There were those who were unconscious, weeping, dazed, and shrieking. After they saw Ming ChangYan come in, they all began to tremble, sliding to the back of the cage.

Huai Yu said, “All the brides of He Bo are locked in here.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Not exactly. Look at this, and this, there’s a portion of the cages that are empty.”

He paused for a bit, “There’s no time to lose, let’s save them first.”

The iron cage was suspended from mid-air, Ming ChangYan circled around the cave before he found a switch. After he lowered the cages, he took out another needle and began picking the lock. When Huai Yu saw this he asked, “Didn’t you run out of needles?”

Ming ChangYan pried the doors open then tucked his needle away, “You’re right, I plucked this needle from that dead person’s body. A person like you who uses gold beads as weapons will never understand the feelings of someone like me.”

Huai Yu indifferently asked, “Well why don’t you tell me, what kind of feelings?”

Ming ChangYan chuckled, “Such a bad temper.”

With the iron doors opened, the girls were all terror-stricken as they crawled out. Ming ChangYan supported her shoulder, soothing, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid.”

Huai Yu crossed his arms and coldly watched from a distance.

Ming ChangYan said, “How long were you guys locked up in here?”

For a short while, everyone began talking at once. There were girls who’d been here for two days, four days, even five days.

Ming ChangYan tentatively muttered to himself, “None of them have been here for over seven days.”

One person said, “On the seventh day, there’s someone who comes to open the door before taking us away.”

Ming ChangYan, “Where do they bring them?”

The person shook her head, her teardrops dripping down, “I don’t know, but, but of the people taken, none of them ever came back!”

Ming ChangYan said, “That’s weird. But I opened the cage for you, are you not afraid that I’m actually here take you away?”

This time, everyone’s complexion turned deathly pale, like they just saw a terrible sight.

The girl with somewhat of a bigger backbone continued, “That’s impossible. The person…..the person that came to take us away…..was, was a paper doll!”

Ming ChangYan paused, “Paper doll?”

“A paper doll! In the beginning, it was too dark so we thought we were just seeing things. But then there was once when it came and took a girl away. The girl struggled so hard that she struck down a candlestick. The flames fell on its body and it caught on fire. And just like a piece of paper, it burned till there was nothing left of it!”

Ming ChangYan questioned, “Do you still remember what it looked like?”

The girl thought for a bit then recalled, “It was a red paper doll, it had a skirt drawn with red ink on it. Its hands were tucked within its sleeves and its hair was made from scraps of black paper. The doll’s facial features were drawn on. It was very rigid when it walked, just like…”

Ming ChangYan tipped, “Just like a puppet under control right?”

He continued, “Alright, I understand. Now could to tell me, where did it take you?”

As the women realized they were saved, they were wild with joy, and quickly pointed towards a secret passageway.

Ming ChangYan walked through the passageway in the time it took to burn an incense until finally arriving at a staircase. They ascended and opened the wooden plank at the very top, the glare of the outside world irritated his eyes. He closed his eyes for a bit then jumped out. As soon as Ming ChangYan landed on the ground, he observed his surroundings. Unexpectedly, at the end of the passage was a lady’s private chambers.

The place had a muddled fragrance that drifted through the air, decorated with red gauze. The design of it was bold and blatant while still being welcoming, definitely not the chambers of a lady from a respectable family. Soon after Huai Yu walked out, he appeared to not be accustomed to the extravagant and aromatic room, slightly furrowing his brows.

Ming ChangYan questioned, “Where do you think this is?”

Huai Yu pushed opened the windows, causing the air outside to float in. With the windows opened, one could hear the flirtatious and soft voices of the women outside. It was all a bunch of lewd dirty talk, unbearable to listen to.

Huai Yu answered, “Brothel.”

Just as he finished speaking, the door was pushed open. After the brothel keeper who was greeting a guest opened the door and saw tens of unsolicited guests in the room, her voice stopped. Immediately afterward, she let out a shriek that broke through the skies.

When Zhu ChuanKang heard the news, he promptly arrived at the brothel and took the rescued girls back to their respective families.

When Zhao XiaoLan rushed over, it was like a bush of flowers just passed by as he found Ming ChangYan.

He was very familiar with the brothel, like he was simply taking a quick stroll. The moment he arrived, all the girls greeted him in a sweet manner, causing Zhao XiaoLan’s face to turn red. Ming ChangYan teased, “XiaoLan, a regular customer!”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Sometimes, sometimes.”

He quickly diverted the subject, “Yan-jiejie, how did you and Huai Yu-gege end up here? When you jumped into the river this morning, I thought…..”

“You thought we were dead?”

Zhao XiaoLan shook his head, “Probably not to that extent. You have Huai Yu-gege so how could things go wrong? I just thought it was weird why you guys didn’t come ashore. Now I finally get it.”

He was only halfway done when Zhu ChuanKang stepped forwards, “I’ve already assigned people to examine the cell at the bottom of the river. This time it’s all thanks to the two of you that we were able to eliminate this whole theory about He Bo taking a wife. But how this whole epidemic emerged, do you two Daren have an idea?”

Ming ChangYan glanced towards Huai Yu. Huai Yu said, “This epidemic is not limited to GuangLing.”

“YuZhou, LouJiang, and YuLin all have been affected by this same epidemic. I accepted the emperor’s orders to take a look at these areas, and although the symptoms of the epidemic were different in each area, they all emerged abruptly and had little effect on neighboring cities.”

Zhu ChuanKang seemed to remember something and inquired, “According to Daren’s words, you’ve already investigated this matter. Then may I venture to ask what position this Daren has in the imperial court?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Position? Huai Yu, what position do you have?”

Zhao XiaoLan responded, “Zhu-daren, he’s the nation’s Prime Minister, Immortal Yun Qing.”

Zhu ChuanKang was stunned, not anticipating the imperial court’s Prime Minister to be so young. When he finally snapped out of it, he was already kneeling on the ground, showing courtesy.

“I failed to realize who you are and didn’t expect that the Young Prime Minister would personally come to GuangLing.”

Ming ChangYan thought: Huai Yu’s position really is that high. In any case, Zhu ChuanKang is still an important state official in the government. His position is high, but for him to show such courtesy, really, his spoiled temperament didn’t just come out of nowhere.

He said, “Stop kneeling, stand up and speak.”

Zhu ChuanKang didn’t move.

Ming ChangYan thought: Weirdo, I tell him to stand up but he still doesn’t stand up. Don’t tell me you’d rather just continue kneeling?

A moment later, Huai Yu said, “If he told you to stand up, then stand up.”

Zhu ChuanKang stood up and exclaimed, “The Young Prime Minister must save the innocent people of GuangLing!”

Huai Yu nodded his head, Ming ChangYan continued, “According to your words, this epidemic has been frequently appearing these past few years but even though it doesn’t make a commotion, there are still a lot of deaths. If these epidemics aren’t coincidental and deliberately placed there by someone, then for what reason would they do this for?”

Zhao XiaoLan opted, “What reason? Doesn’t an epidemic only cause death! Right? What do you think Zhu-xiong?”

Zhu Rong smiled, “How would I know?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Death, you’re right, it’s exactly because of death. Zhu-daren, may I ask, how do you take care of the corpses of those that died from the epidemic?”

Zhu ChuanKang replied, “We give the families two silver taels to buy a coffin, carry them to the Little Mouth Valley and bury them.”

Ming ChangYan commented, “Okay, I understand.”

He asked Zhu ChuanKang a few more questions before dispatching him away. Zhao XiaoLan said, “Yan-jiejie, I have to go pass out congee to people on the streets so I won’t stay here too long.”

Zhao XiaoLan cupped his hands together in respect then departed with Zhu Rong to help with victims of the epidemic.

For a moment, only Huai Yu and him remained in the room, the atmosphere suddenly turning tranquil.

Only after quite a while did Huai Yu respond to the gaze beside him, “What are you thinking about now?”

Ming ChangYan smiled and walked closer.

“Young Prime Minister, I’m going to have to thank you for your trouble tonight….”

Hey guys! This chapter came out super quick cause I’m on break └|∵┌| |┐∵|┘ whooop

Also, the audio drama for this novel came out like 2 weeks ago and I forgot to mention it, oops. Honestly, the quality of it could be better and it’s all in all just super dry. The supporting actors sound like they’re reciting sutras. The only positive thing about it is that the ED is very good. I’ll give them that.

Here’s the link (if you wanna give it a go):

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 34

Chapter 34: The God of the Yellow River Takes a Wife – Part 4

Translated by: Ritpoppy

The person rolled across the street twice and his bamboo hat fell on the ground. He picked it up but didn’t intend to put it back on, revealing a smooth and round face.

Ming ChangYan smiled, “Hey, aren’t you that Ming ChangYan, Ming ShaoXia!”

It turns out that it was that ‘Noble Gentleman’ who had hastily ran away before. He patted off the bamboo hat, looked at Ming ChangYan, and smiled back, “What a coincidence.”

Zhao XiaoLan’s expression paled, “That’s a bunch of nonsense! Ming ShaoXia would never be that fat!”

‘The Noble Gentleman’ said, “Hahahaha, I ate too much, it’s hard to avoid becoming fat. I’m not an immortal, naturally, I have to eat food.”

He put back on the bamboo hat and continued, “Anyway, I’m not Ming ChangYan. This crutch is called Wang, may I ask you distinguished gentlemen your names?”

Ming ChangYan said, “This person’s insignificant name is not worth mentioning. This fellow crutch, since you’re not Ming ChangYan, why do you pretend to be him?”

Crutch Wang replied, “Aren’t you pretending to be him as well? Everyone knows that it’s nothing but using the Noble Gentleman’s name to fake a reputation. We’re all out here just to get a meal, they all see through it, but none of us say anything about it.”

Ming ChangYan thought: I didn’t expect the title of Noble Gentleman to be used in such a way.

Crutch Wang said, “These good friends, where do you plan on going?”

Ming ChangYan replied, “We’re going to YanDang River.”

Crutch Wang said, “To be straightforward, since the two of us met by chance I won’t hold back from you. GuangLing is being plagued by evil spirits. There are people helping the dying and healing the injured and also those who are taking advantage of the crisis to gain some cash. You just saw for yourself the behaviors of that XiaoHan Temple; how could they be here to help subdue the evil, they’re clearly here to fish for a quick buck! If you lot are going to YanDang River to help the people, there’s no need. Otherwise instead of doing a chivalrous deed, you’ll just going to be a bother.”

Ming ChangYan said, “How could you say such a thing?”

Crutch Wang said, “You’ll see for yourself when you arrive at YanDang River.”

No one suspected him and they all hurried to YanDang River.

On the banks of the YanDang River gathered a few crowds. Just as Crutch Wang had said, every sect in JiangHu dispatched 3 to 4 people to GuangLing for disaster relief. Ming ChangYan recognized a few of the sect disciple’s uniforms, the rest in uniforms were either form lesser sects or lone cultivators. In short, the crowd was bustling with activity.

Huai Yu held onto his arm, to avoid him jumping around too much and accidentally falling into the river.

On the river rested a row of bamboo rafts. On each raft was a newly built altar. The altars were built with wood and bricks, around it stood a ring-fence while in the middle was three gongs and drums.

A little old man wearing a tortoise shell standing next to the gongs and drums caught Ming ChangYan’s attention.

He asked, “This person is wearing a rather strange-looking outfit, what’s the meaning of this?”

Crutch Wang immediately gave him an explanation, “When He Bo takes a bride, there needs to be a person receive the bride. This person cannot be someone from dry land, if a millennia year old tortoise from the river cultivates to human form, after waiting for the bride to finish dressing up, it can go receive the bride.”

Ming ChangYan concluded, “So he’s playing the role of the tortoise.”

He secretly gave the little old man the name Senior Minister Tortoise in his head. He closely examined him and noticed that beside Senior Minister Tortoise was a woman wearing mourning clothes.

“This person is wearing mourning clothes, did someone in their family pass away?”

“She’s the shaman who’s managing He Bo taking a wife. The bride marrying He Bo is a joyful occasion. But a soul entering the heavens is a mournful occasion. He Bo taking a wife is both a joyful and mournful occasion, that’s why she’s wearing mourning clothes.”

Ming ChangYan crinkled his eyebrows, exclaiming, “A load of crap.”

Huai Yu, “The bride’s coming.”

Senior Minister Tortoise rushed over, bent down, and carried a maiden that was wailing nonstop. She was clothed in red and green, the style of dress for a wedding. She held a red candle as her entire body shook uncontrollably. Ming ChangYan moved, but just as he was about to stop them, Huai Yu prevented him from doing so, “With your current cultivation, do you think you’ll be able to win a fight against them?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Don’t I still have you?”

Huai Yu said, “Even if you have me, what do you expect me to do? Kill everyone here?”

Ming ChangYan decided, “Let me think of a plan.”

Before he could even conjure up a plan, the bride had already been ushered by old tortoise man onto the boat. On the boat there was a bridal chamber made out of paper tied with red and green tassels. Even with the breeze, the structure stayed in place. When He Bo is taking wife, the bride must first stay in one of these paper houses, then they install some paper dowry, before it’s all lumped together aboard. A small hole will be drilled into the boat ahead of time so when the boat is out on the river it doesn’t sink right away. Rather, only when the boat arrives at the center will the bride begin to sink along with the boat.

During that time the bride will most likely begin struggling and calling for help, the tragic situation unbearable. Therefore, before getting on the boat, the bride’s arms and legs need to be bound together. In addition, they even added two large stones to ensure that she’ll sink to the bottom of the river. Finally, worried that she might cry for help and the people present might take pity on her, they even sealed up her mouth.

The old tortoise man took a thumb-thick, coarse rope, motioning as if he was about to tie the bride up.

Ming ChangYan frowned as he continued to observe, the railings were loose on the altar and bricks piled up in a hideous mess, his mind stirred. He suddenly patted Zhao XiaoLan’s back, “XiaoLan, didn’t you say you wanted to be a chivalrous hero? An opportunity for you to be chivalrous has arrived!”

Zhao XiaoLan sputtered, “That’s what I was thinking! It’s despicable to treat an innocent maiden like this!”

After saying these words, he began to walk towards the altar. Who would’ve thought that Zhao XiaoLan was so eager to save the girl that he sprained his leg after a mere two steps? Zhu Rong was instantly shocked, but before he could raise his arms and catch him, Zhao XiaoLan lived up to expectations and plummeted to the ground under the gaze of everyone around them. Before he collapsed, he dragged the rope that was wrapped around the altar down with him. Ming ChangYan pulled out a needle and took this as an opportunity to fiercely stab at where the ends of the rope met. The rope that was met with the spiritual energy dispersed on the spot. The altar itself that was used when He Bo took a wife was never built to be sturdy. As the ropes dispersed, the banners that were on top of the altar fell down one by one. Finally, with a loud rumble, the entire offering platform collapsed.

The weeping bride was dumbfounded while the shaman let out a blood-curdling scream as the platform slowly sunk to the bottom of the river. The groups of people who were standing along the shoreline, those who knew how to swim leaped into the river only to climb back up. The shaman flopped around for quite a while, but only as she was just about to run out of air did the old tortoise man jump in and save her.

Ming ChangYan laughed out loud, “It seems that He Bo isn’t very pleased with his new bride!”

The shaman crawled up the shore, after noticing Ming ChangYan she said, “Are you here to stir up trouble?”

Ming ChangYan walked out from the middle of the crowd. He swept a glance at everyone before saying, “Stir up trouble? This He Bo taking a wife is complete nonsense. You’re poisoning the people when you yourselves aren’t even aware of what’s right and what’s wrong. Insisting it’s all an epidemic, causing human lives to be lost without any proper reasoning. Tell me that I’m the one causing trouble, say it again.”

Zhao XiaoLan asked, “Yan-jiejie, what do you mean by poisoning?”

Ming ChangYan added, “Let me ask you something. Along the way here, besides GuangLing, were there any other epidemics that emerged near the area?”

Zhao XiaoLan answered, “No.”

Ming ChangYan continued, “Since this is an epidemic, why is GuangLing the only disaster-stricken area while it’s surrounding regions doesn’t have a hair wrong with them?”

The shaman retorted, “Naturally it’s because He Bo is angry and dropped its fury onto GuangLing! His lordship has the right to do as he pleases and didn’t condemn the other areas!”

Ming ChangYan commented, “Hilarious. It’s prejudiced that you have to sacrifice a bride, oh you’re so tragic. If this He Bo wasn’t a moron then he’d be mentally challenged. This ‘calamity’ that’s stricken GuangLing, it never was an epidemic, rather someone has poisoned them.”

The shaman’s expression was deathly pale, she cried, “You’re just saying nonsense! How do you know that it’s poisoning!”

Ming ChangYan thought: Because two years ago, I’ve personally sampled this vigorous poison. How would I not be able to recognize it?

At this moment, a person wearing blue spoke out from the crowd, “I think what he’s saying makes sense. If it really was He Bo’s fury, why hasn’t the epidemic settled down after he took so many brides?”

The shaman argued, “He Bo hasn’t received enough!”

Ming ChangYan laughed, “Maybe it’ll be enough if he takes you!”

The shaman’s complexion changed, suddenly she let out a current of unusual strength, grabbing the bride and threw her aboard. Before anyone could respond, an elder let out a loud shout before he sent off a ball of spiritual energy that hit the back end of the boat. Immediately the boat rushed forwards like an arrow being shot. With a ‘whoosh’, it flew a few meters forwards.

Ming ChangYan promptly leaped over the fencing, causing Huai Yu’s pupils to shrink. But Ming ChangYan had already borrowed some spiritual energy, stepping on the fence before steadily landing aboard. The moment he had a firm standing he reached out to untie the ropes around the bride. The boat had already taken in a finger length of water, he threw out the two stones on the boat, but it didn’t stop the boat from its continuous sinking.

The spiritual energy the elder had let out was extraordinary. The boat flew a few hundred meters, Ming ChangYan said, “So fast!”

The bride spit out the white cloth that had been blocking her mouth, confusedly crying, “SAVE ME!! HELP!”

Ming ChangYan replied, “Don’t panic, I’m thinking.”

The bride exerted enough strength to swallow her saliva, shivering, “This Young Master said ‘so fast’, but will saying ‘so fast’ be able to save us?”

Ming ChangYan frowned as he inspected the river, replying, “I’m saying that the boat is sinking ‘so fast.’”

Sure enough, after the two barely exchanged a few words, the water leaking into the boat had already reached their ankles. The bride let out a scream before she fainted.

Ming ChangYan turned around and thought: Oh no, I shouldn’t have scared her. So feeble!

At this point, the tiny hole drilled into the boat was already in bad condition, so it thought it might as well just split open, allowing all of the water to pour in. The crack widened, Ming ChangYan stumbled, and soon the two along with the boat fell into the river.

He knew he was going to fall thus he took a breath in advance so that even if he was underwater, he wouldn’t be completely helpless.

The river water was muddy and there seemed to be a distinct force that was pulling Ming ChangYan into the center of the river. He struggled for a bit before he forcibly opened his eyes and began to look for the bride’s silhouette.

He couldn’t find the bride but saw the silhouette of a man, similar to that of a giant fish leaping up from out of the water. Ming ChangYan was startled, his panic making it difficult for him to recognize the path. He swam backwards and hid inside a patch of water grass.

The silhouette swam with ease, clearly exceptional in water and was well-versed with the underwater terrain. He methodically swam for a while before finding the bride. Ming ChangYan held his breath and watched with rapt attention, but the figure merely picked up the bride and carried her deeper underwater. He hastily pushed the water grass away, intending to catch up on them. However just as he moved his body he realized that he couldn’t move his foot.

Ming ChangYan was alarmed as he looked back. His foot was tightly coiled around the water grass.

He immediately bent down to resolve the problem. But the more he tried, the tighter it became while the oxygen in his lungs was starting to run out. He thought: Oh no, don’t tell me I’m going to die miserably here!

Just as the thought arose in his mind, Ming ChangYan suddenly felt his body become lighter as he was held closely by someone. Following came a ray of bright light, the water grass slowly slid off his foot.

Ming ChangYan’s heart fluttered and looked towards the person who saved him. He gripped his hand and pointed towards where the silhouette disappeared to.

Huai Yu nodded his head, he reached out towards his waist and held it tightly in his arms. Ming ChangYan was a bit startled in the water, if not for the fact that he was out of breath he was afraid that he would’ve jumped three feet in the air.

When Huai Yu saw his reaction he gave him an unfathomable look. His eyes seemed to say: You still have strength left in you?

Ming ChangYan rubbed his nose and consciously gestured: Actually, no.

The two exchanged complicated glances, being very inconvenient. Huai Yu hugged him and brought both of them back to shore with what was remaining energy he had left.

Coincidentally, at the bottom of the river there were two large rocks with enough space between the cracks for the two to walk over. Ming ChangYan passed through the cracks which were both narrow and broad before arriving at a clearing.

Finally from above their heads they could see the crystalline waters. Huai Yu took them up a few meters as they suddenly broke through the waters.

The moment they broke through the waters, Ming ChangYan felt like he was given new life and took big mouthfuls of air. His entire body was so weak that he hugged Huai Yu’s neck for a bit to take a breather before saying, “Let’s go ashore and take a look.”

After they climbed ashore, Ming ChangYan felt nauseous all over. He rubbed his face and narrowed his eyes in concentration. His vision was a bit blurry and couldn’t see very clearly. All he saw in front of him were two stone doors running in opposite directions. By his ears, he heard the sound of the water and the sigh of the wind.

“Huai Yu, take a look at what’s that in front!”

Huai Yu walked forwards a few steps. Ming ChangYan grabbed his arm, reaching out, he found his clothes dry and clean.

Ming ShaoXia was shocked, “How are you dry?”

Taking another look, Huai Yu’s hair was loose and extremely smooth. He reached out for a touch and realized that it was dry as well.

“Internal drying forces.”

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan smiled, “So it’s like that. After years of not being able to use my cultivation, I completely forgot about it.”

Huai Yu said, “Stand closer.”

Ming ChangYan asked, “Why?”

He didn’t move so Huai Yu moved.

Ming ChangYan’s hands were caught by him. All of a sudden, a flow of spiritual energy stirred in his body. In a short period of time, his clothes were as dry and clean as ever.

Huai Yu ignited a fire, inquiring, “How do you know that there’s something below this river?”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “Because rivers usually flow towards the earth, only YanDang River’s water flows towards the middle!”

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 33

Chapter 33: The God of the Yellow River Takes a Wife – Part 3

Translated by: Ritpoppy

Ming ChangYan and XiaoHan Temple have had grievances accumulated for a long time, with deep hatred running between the two, a thousand times deeper than any body of water. It was old, worn-out news that everyone in JiangHu was aware of.

The old bald monkey led the young bald monkeys, wanting compensation from Ming ChangYan. The two were in a deadlock as the person dressed in black struggled opened his rope, yelling, “You sure have the guts!”

Ming ChangYan was austere as he sighed in regret: Such a familiar opening!

Sure enough, to further confirm Ming ChangYan’s speculations, the man dressed in black suddenly jumped up.

“Do you not know who I am!”

Ming ChangYan was alarmed to see the other wearing all black with a long sword tied around his waist, on his side a black-veiled bamboo hat, and a three-foot-long cape draped along his shoulders.

“This ShaoXia is the Noble Gentleman! Ming ChangYan! Are you guys blind?!”

As soon as these words left his mouth, the little monk’s willpower couldn’t hold it and he burst out in laughter, “You? You’re Ming ChangYan! HAHAHAHAHA!”

The hero who deemed himself as the Noble Gentleman was six feet tall, six feet wide, his expression filled with worry and joy. He was indeed very robust, so much so that the earth quaked and mountains rumbled. Truly a plump man.

The young monk tossed aside his garb. Even though you could see people pretending to be the Noble Gentleman everywhere across GuangLing, it was the first time he’s seen a ‘Ming ChangYan’ this plump before. He mocked, “Ming ChangYan, you sure have eaten a lot in these two years. Have your skills all gone to your fat!”

‘The Noble Gentleman’ said, “What does that have anything to do with you, you bald monkey!”

The young monk said, “Since you’re the Noble Gentleman, XiaoHan Temple have always done things for the good of the innocent, but you’ve exterminated so many sects, you’re so hard working!”

When Ming ChangYan heard this, he promptly raised his hand, “Excuse me, let me interrupt you for a moment, when did Ming ChangYan exterminate another sect?”

The young monk raised his eyebrow and asked, “And who are you?”

Ming ChangYan laughed out loud, “To be honest, I’m actually also Ming ChangYan.”

The young monk said, “What an annoying nuisance.”

Without saying anything else, they began fighting. That ‘Noble Gentleman’ noticed that the situation was amiss before frantically running away. It was one versus four with Ming ChangYan at the disadvantage. Needless to say, he soon began thinking about a way to resist them.

He quickly said, “Hold up! Sirs, doesn’t XiaoHan Temple use their mouths instead of their hands!”

The people from XiaoHan Temple looked at him, “Then let me ask you, where did this Ming ChangYan come from?”

Ming ChangYan waved his hands and retreated, “With pleasure, with pleasure, anywhere is fine! However looking at your expressions, you don’t plan to let me go, do you.”

The young monk cursed, “Fuck you! You jumped down and kicked us without any reasoning, and now you’re accusing us of not letting you go?!”

Ming ChangYan turned pale with fright and put his hands together, “Amitabha, monks should not use such profanities.”

The monk’s expressions changed.

Even though XiaoHan Temple has the reputation of being a famous temple, their conduct was extremely simple and crude. In the past two years after the purge of Ming ChangYan, they didn’t even pretend to act like monks anymore. Apart from the bald head and clothes of a monk, you wouldn’t be able to tell they were monks. However, even if they didn’t put effort into their outward appearances, they still forbid others from exposing them for it.

But now that Ming ChangYan said those words, it caused the bald monkeys to obtain just a little bit more face.

“Then what do you want to do?”

Ming ChangYan laughed, “I’m afraid that if I alone fight you four, it’ll lose you a lot of face. So I’ve decided to fight you guys one on one so it won’t be as embarrassing when you lose!”

The young monk said, “You arrogant and conceited ruffian!”

Ming ChangYan waved his hand, “I’ve already said I’m Ming ChangYan. If Ming ChangYan wanted to beat up you four, he wouldn’t even need five needles!”

When he said this, from his cuffs, Ming ChangYan impressively pulled out four needles.

The young monk exclaimed, “He has needles! Could it be….”

The old monk scolded, “Why are you afraid of a few needles? Don’t tell me that you think that Ming ChangYan is still alive! So many people saw him fall into the river that day, they’re just a few needles. It’s not like there aren’t people who use needles!”

The two didn’t suppress their voices in the slightest, so when Ming ChangYan heard them he began laughing even more viciously, “You don’t believe me? If you don’t believe me then come give it a go!”

The old monk was afraid that Ming ChangYan was bluffing while also noticing that this ‘Noble Gentleman’s’ temperament was different from the countless others he’s met. After hesitating for a moment he said, “Fine! Let’s go with what you suggested! Pu Ti, go up and show him some moves.”

Pu Ti was that swearing, dirty young monk. He walked a few steps forward and let out a loud shout. The remaining three monks retreated a few paces back, making it easier for Ming ChangYan and Pu Ti to fight.

XiaoHan Temple’s martial arts were evolved from DaHan Temple with the majority of them coming from Buddhist scriptures, attaching importance to mercy, only injuring when necessary. While Ming ChangYan’s Ghost Gate’s Thirteen Needles was the complete opposite, fierce and oppressive, which can be fatal at times.

Ming ChangYan said, “You’re lucky today you young bald monkey! This ShaoXia has recently learned a new technique, I’m letting you off lightly!”

When those words left his mouth, a needle shot out at once. It was as thin as a strand of hair making it almost impossible to spot. Pu Ti spread open his legs, regulated his yin and yang energy while vital energy enveloped his whole body. If it was an ordinary weapon, the moment it comes into contact with the aura around Pu Ti, it’ll snap in half. But the Moondrop Needle is not an ordinary weapon. The needle that was connected to a string struck right into Pu Ti’s acupuncture point.

Pu Ti only felt a slight pain in his thigh, but before he could even register a response, Ming ChangYan suddenly pulled both his hands back while rapidly retreating back two steps. Pu Ti’s expression changed drastically, yelling, “Impossible!”

Ming ChangYan gave him a crafty grin as his two hands began to quickly move the needle and string. Pu Ti’s two legs were immediately locked in place by him. He forced him to do a backflip, causing the other to land firmly on the ground.

As a result, Ming ShaoXia made the mistake of repeating old habits.

He grinned, opening his mouth he said, “What’s wrong? Not a match for me so you decide to kneel for me? Oh, you mustn’t, I’m not worthy!”

Ming ChangYan increased his pressure, the needle that was pinned in Pu Ti pressed deeper into his leg. Pu Ti immediately lost control over his legs, pulled down by a very vigorous strength, he kneeled directly on the ground. Without even a moment to catch his breath, Ming ChangYan pulled on the string once again. Pu Ti’s foot instantly faced the sky while his head was buried in the ground.

Subconsciously, in order to protect his own head, Pu Ti’s two hands propped himself up, creating the posture of doing a handstand. This sort of behavior was all due to Ming ChangYan. He was extremely mischievous. Holding onto the string like he was walking a dog, he pulled on Pu Ti and walked about the streets. How were Pu Ti’s pitiful hands supposed to catch up with Ming ChangYan’s foot? In just moments his hands started dripping with blood as he howled.

After Ming ChangYan had his fun, he sneered, “Pu Ti, water flows downhill whereas man struggles upwards*, how come you’re going further and further down! Ah, no wait, I forgot, you’re walking upside down.”

(TN: Under the laws of gravity, water will always flow down. It means that if people don’t work hard and struggle, they can only flow together with the tide.)

When the other three monks saw Ming ChangYan humiliate Pu Ti like this, their faces were both full of hatred and outrage as they suddenly grew claws. XiaoHan Temple was well-known for their fierce tiger claw technique. Ming ChangYan quickly said, “Hey! You guys are so unfair, didn’t we come to an agreement that we’d face each other one on one? What are you doing now? Since you can’t defeat me, you’ve decided to call for help?!”

“YOU!”

Ming ChangYan began withdrawing backward while saying, “You? What you? How could such a large sect not keep their word!”

The monks looked at each other in dismay, among them, one unexpectedly waved a rod and cut off the string that Ming ChangYan was using for control. The string had high elasticity; after being cut it shot back and slashed Ming ChangYan’s hand, creating three red marks.

Without his needle, Ming ChangYan’s heart skipped a beat. A wave of cold air rushed up from the soles of his feet, his entire body telling him to retreat.

He wasn’t used to using this new technique that he had come up with yet. Now that the string he had poured what little spiritual energy he had into was broken, the situation wasn’t looking good.

The old monk said, “This first round can count as your win! Now let me allow you to experience some of my skills!”

Ming ChangYan sorrowfully thought: How sad!

“Wait, I have something to say!”

The old monk asked, “What words do you have, say them quickly!”

Ming ChangYan retorted, “Why are you so anxious. I want to talk slowly, so slowly that my throat’s sore. Old monk, it seems that you must be very old this year, old enough for half your foot to be stepping in a coffin. Just now you challenged me to a competition and I won while still having a disadvantage. If this were to spread among the cultivation circles and everyone began saying that Ming ChangYan bullied the weak and disabled, it would be too convenient for you. Wouldn’t that ruin my entire reputation?”

The old monk fiercely said, “I pei! You yellow-haired rascal* that can’t differentiate between right or wrong. I’ve always hated smooth talkers like you. Stand still! Take this attack!”

(TN: “黄毛小儿”; a derogatory phrase that means a naive and foolish child)

After he cursed out the phrase yellow-haired rascal, the old monk suddenly discovered that Ming ChangYan’s hair was indeed a bit lighter, not a pure shiny black, and let out a few hearty laughs.

Ming ChangYan hastily recoiled back a few steps, raising his palm and hindered the other, “Ok ok ok, if you want to fight then let’s fight. It’s just that I’m a little tired after fighting with that other young monk. Let me loosen my muscles a bit so that we can fight to our heart’s content!”

The old monk was skeptical but still lowered his rod.

Ming ChangYan stretched his arm and let out a yawn. Following which he put a hand on his waist while a hand lifted his thigh, then bent his lower back a few times before switching and bending his back three more times.

The old monk felt apprehensive: Strange.

Ming ChangYan massaged his foot a little and did a few more calf exercises. The old monk was still in doubt when suddenly, Ming ChangYan’s figure moved and he broke into a run.

Following closely was miserable shouting that could be heard from every corner of the street.

“HUAI YU!!! HELP ME!!! HELP!!!”

The old monk was gobsmacked, realizing that he had just fallen pawn to this slippery little scoundrel. He was extremely furious, immediately running after him.

Ming ChangYan ran without any form of dignity. Along the way he ran like he was flying, his body moving fast ignoring everything, while his posture was extraordinary. He burst into the inn with the old monk following close behind. Ming ChangYan ran up the stairs like he had God on his side, taking three steps in just two steps. At last, when the old monk caught up to him, he jumped up and hid behind Huai Yu.

The old monk abruptly looked up the flight of stairs and noticed a young man who bore an unusual presence. His face as the appearance of snow, his aura refined, who seemed to have a dragon’s talent and a phoenix’s beauty, in other words, he was other-worldly. He couldn’t help but be alarmed as he thought: Which martial circle does this child come from, how come I’ve never seen him before!

Ming ShaoXia survived by the skin of his teeth, finally letting out a breath of relief. He tucked a loose strand of hair behind his ear and shamelessly boasted, “Old monk, if you want to fight me, you’re going to have to have to do it over his dead body! I’ll have you know that this is my Da-ge! He’s not someone you can provoke!”

Huai Yu coldly glanced at him.

Ming ChangYan hesitated, “What are you looking at me for, you’re the one who wanted to be my Da-ge. The Da-ge must naturally take care of the younger one. During the daytime, I help you carry tea and refill your water, now that my life is at risk, what’s wrong with helping me!”

The old monk said, “Good!”

He glared at him while holding onto the metal rod he adopted the attitude of walking up the stairs. Ming ChangYan’s heart trembled in fear, confoundedly tugging at Huai Yu’s sleeves, “Little Huai Yu, you wouldn’t just leave me out to die would you.”

Huai Yu snorted, raising his hand at a more rapid speed than the old monk’s movements. He slightly leaned his head to the side as tiny gold beads shot out like an arrow being shot by a bow. It wasn’t even a millimeter off, directly striking three acupuncture points behind the old monk’s knee, calf, and feet. The old monk kneeled down on the spot, his stomach feeling like a remarkable mess, and with a “bleugh” vomited a pool of yellow bile.

Ming ChangYan applauded, “Huai Yu, good boy, so loyal!”

As he said this, the other two monks who were carrying Pu Ti rushed over and saw the old monk laying on the floor. They immediately howled in rage and began to directly approach them. But no matter how hard the two tried they were unable to take even a single step up the stairs. They could only bounce and scuttle across the floor like a monkey performing tricks, awfully comical.

Ming ChangYan was uproarious as he took joy from the misfortunes of others. Occasionally clapping his hands, occasionally cheering.

Only after he had his fun did he ask, “Huai Yu, what was the weapon that you used earlier? I saw a flash of golden light and thought it looked familiar.”

Huai Yu answered, “Gold beads.”

When he first opened his mouth, Ming ChangYan still hadn’t fully comprehended it yet.

After quite a while, he was shocked, “What?”

Huai Yu gave him an unfathomable look, “What are you doing talking so loudly, it hurts my ears.”

Ming ChangYan’s heart ached, pitifully saying, “How are you able to say such words with a straight face.”

The gold beads rolled a few more times on the ground before stopping. Ming ChangYan promptly walked downstairs and picked up a few of them. Raising his head, Pu Ti was fixedly staring at him with hatred in his eyes. Ming ChangYan suddenly realized something; just before he went back upstairs, he didn’t forget to retrieve the three Moondrop needles that were still stuck in Pu Ti’s legs.

He let out a miserable shriek. Ming ChangYan covered his ears and said, “Pardon me, I’m currently at a shortage of needles right now. If I don’t get them back then I won’t have anything to use next time.”

Pu Ti said, “You….you, who are you!”

Ming ChangYan said, “Me? I’m Ming ChangYan! But you guys, is there nothing for you to do so you came to GuangLing? And bullying the common people without reason too!”

Pu Ti didn’t even reply yet when from the doorway came the voice of a teenager.

“Yan-jiejie! Is that you inside!”

Ming ChangYan turned around and locked gazes with Huai Yu.

The next moment Zhao XiaoLan gracefully came in. The fragrance of rouge and flowers soon filled the entire building occasionally accompanied by the soft sounds of a bell. Zhao XiaoLan carried a bouquet of osmanthus flowers as he vigorously exclaimed, “I knew it was you! Earlier Zhu-xiong and I saw your figure while roaming the streets, except they had a man’s voice so I wasn’t sure. Then when I came over here to take a look, it turned out it really was you!”

“Yan-jiejie, your fake male voice sounds a lot like a man!”

Zhu Rong followed closely behind. When he saw Ming ChangYan, he gave him a courteous smile.

Ming ChangYan said, “Really! I also think it’s quite alike!”

Zhao XiaoLan began fawning on him at once, “Yes, very! Other than the Ugly Goddess of Mercy, I’ve never met anyone that sounds so similar!”

The Ugly Goddess of Mercy is an amiable appearance master in JiangHu. Whether it was changing one’s voice or appearance, their skills were impeccable. Whether this person was a man or a woman, tall or short, fat or skinny, every time they showed up they wore a different face and had a different figure, just like how the real Goddess of Mercy could change into countless forms. To this day, not a single soul knew of this person’s true identity nor of their appearance. Even though this person was called the Goddess of Mercy, their conduct was nothing like the good deeds of the goddess. Their methods were sinister and devastated chivalry, thus deemed the Ugly Goddess of Mercy.

Ming ChangYan laughed, “Ugly Goddess of Mercy? Hahaha, you’re making me feel embarrassed. If you’ve actually met the Ugly Goddess of Mercy, how would you be frisking around right now?”

Zhao XiaoLan continued, “Yan-jiejie this is a great time to bump into you. Zhu-xiong and I were just about to go stop He Bo from taking another wife, you might as well come with us!”

Ming ChangYan questioned, “He Bo taking a wife?”

Zhao XiaoLan nodded, “Right at YanDang River, follow me.”

Huai Yu said, “With this epidemic in GuangLing, many sects from the martial circles have sent people to come help. But they miscalculated, the number of people who came were too small compared to the number of people getting sick. Up until now there still haven’t been any breakthroughs. Presenting He Bo with a wife didn’t seem to improve the situation, on the contrary, made things even worse; so they began changing the time of sacrifice from every ten days to every three days.”

Hearing this Zhao XiaoLan suddenly saw the light, “No wonder I saw so many hasty people with knives and swords on the streets.”

The four began their journey to YanDang River, but who would’ve imagined that halfway there, from in front of them appeared a man.

Zhao XiaoLan and Huai Yu sightly widened their eyes.

Chapter 32: The God of the Yellow River takes a Wife – Part 2

Note: In case anyone forgot. The god of the Yellow River is called He Bo.

Translated by: Ritpoppy

After three days, Huai Yu came back.

Ming ChangYan was in the courtyard playing with needles. He still had a lot of replicas of the Moondrop needle that he pulled out from Aunt Chun’s neck. Recently he’s been feeling his spiritual energy slowly begin to circulate within his body, even if it was so small it could barely be noticed, it was still enough for him to be gratified. As soon as Ming ChangYan’s face gained some color, he immediately began to move around.

However, he didn’t dare to conduct large movements. He did though have enough energy to pick up the needle during his spare time and embroider.

Back when TianQing was in poverty and destitute, forget about embroidery, he’s even pasted matchboxes together before. Nevertheless, when it comes to making money, embroidery was still the quickest because Ming ShaoXia was best with the needle. His skill was exquisite and his patterns unique every time. The Ghost Gate’s Thirteen Needle’s work was fine and incomparable, when used for embroidery, although this seemed like treating a big thing as something small, the finished product always had people speechless.

The young madams in Lin’an, as long as they were from a wealthy family, who hasn’t purchased Ming ShaoXia’s embroidery before. Except everyone was only aware that they were something that the people of TianQing were selling, who made them was unknown.

After many years, Ming ChangYan once again picked up his old profession. As he began to embroider, he slowly began to get the hang of it once again. After not doing it for ages, he was a bit out of practice. His control had worn down over time, dropping the needle several times while threading through the fabric.

With a jingle, the needle fell to the floor.

Huai Yu just happened to stop by at this moment. Picking up the needle, he stared at Ming ChangYan for a long time but didn’t say a word.

Ming ChangYan secretly sighed inside, laughing he said, “Not mad at me anymore?”

Huai Yu humphed, “What are you doing?”

He gazed in his direction and saw Ming ChangYan currently sitting on a wooden stool, with an embroidery rack in front of him. On it was a rectangular flower tambour tightly being bound onto a piece of soft white satin. The design was more than halfway finished.

Ming ChangYan lowered the needle and propped up his chin, “Embroidery. Have you never seen it before?”

Huai Yu didn’t reply. Ming ChangYan smiled, “Oh, you’ve never seen a man embroider before. But, if women can embroider, why can’t I do it? Don’t tell me that you think they’re better than me!”

On the soft satin was a realistic white deer. Around its body lingered a faint magical aura swarmed in otherworldly clouds. It was originally just supposed to be a picture of a white deer taking a walk in the snow, but Ming ChangYan stubbornly used a golden thread and embroidered a simple looking man on the lower-left corner. From the crane designs on the man’s clothes and scary-looking face like they were on the verge of anger, the person he embroidered was Huai Yu.

Ming ChangYan picked up a pair of scissors and cut off the soft satin. He picked up the needle once again, bordering the fabric with golden silk until it was refined and matchless. Until finally stuffing it into Huai Yu’s hands.

Huai Yu looked up, Ming ChangYan grinned, “Don’t be angry anymore. I’ll give this to you!”

Even though Huai Yu’s complexion wasn’t very good, he still accepted the handkerchief and stuffed it in his bosom. He coldly said, “Do you still want to go to GuangLing?”

Ming ChangYan put both the embroidery rack and the Moondrop needle away, “I want to. Are you going to refuse me again? You’re making it difficult for me to be lenient, little Huai Yu.”

Only after a very long time did Huai Yu arduously relent, “Ok, you can come with me, but I have a demand. You must listen to me.”

Ming ChangYan was both startled and astonished, “Are you really willing to let me come with you? If I go to GuangLing with you with my current identity, if the emperor someday looks into it, they’ll begin to say that you left and eloped with his wife.”

He paused halfway through his speech and began to laugh so hard he had to lean on the table.

Huai Yu spitefully said, “What’s so funny?”

Ming ChangYan’s mouth was still beaming as he said, “Wearing a smile often will bring you good luck. I can’t even laugh now? I didn’t expect you to actually bring me with you to GuangLing.”

Huai Yu remarked, “I’m bringing you, so what?”

Ming ChangYan was all smiles, hastily praising, “Nothing, the Young Prime Minister has a body made of gold, is modest and a simple man. This insignificant Noble Gentleman will naturally follow your wishes. Everything will be done according to your tastes, I’ll listen to everything you say!”

After he finished, he asked, “Have you finished taking care of palace affairs?”

Huai Yu responded, “Mn. This isn’t something you have to worry about. When do you plan on doing to GuangLing?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Of course, the sooner the better.”

The two discussed for a short moment, finally deciding to go together with the Minister of Rites, Xiao Cheng-daren. The moment that Cheng MingLi heard that the Young Prime Minister was going with him, he immediately prepared a carriage out of fear and reverence. The vehicles and horses were on a constant move; arriving at GuangLing in two days. There were peace and prosperity along the way, not at all looking like they were disturbed by an epidemic. It was only after they entered GuangLing’s inner-city walls that they saw thin white silk flow in the wind.

Ming ChangYan jumped out of the carriage and landed as light as a feather. He originally wanted to ride a horse but unfortunately, his body still wasn’t in the best condition, so he could only give up. His clothes were prepared by Huai Yu, an exact replica of the black garments that he used to wear a long time ago; with a cape that wrapped twice around his shoulders and draped down to his waist. The aura of death that came from GuangLing hit him directly on the face the moment he got out of the carriage. The county official Zhu ChuanKang kneeled on the ground in greeting and led everyone to an inn to rest.

Along the way, beggars were sleeping on the streets and there was no supervision whatsoever. White pieces of paper fluttered in the wind while coffins surrounded the area, making people tremble with fear.

Cheng MingLi sighed, “I had thought the report was merely exaggerating. I didn’t expect the situation to be even worse than the written accounts.”

Ming ChangYan commented, “Contrary to what you believe, every corner of the world has their own hells.”

Zhu ChuanKang explained, “The epidemic began earlier this summer. In the beginning, it was only Graduate Zhou who had caught the disease. A few months ago when the list of names who passed the imperial province exam* was announced, he got in. But on his way back to the Zhou family he fell into the YanDang River, luck favored him and he survived but developed a high fever when he returned. At first, the Zhou family’s madam found a doctor to take a look at him, but after half a month he still didn’t get any better even after being prescribed multiple medications.”

(TN: “乡试”; similar to the Civil Service Examination in China. A provincial imperial exam held once every three years for the chance to claim an administrative office role.)

“Later the family sent a child to come find me since he and I could’ve been considered brothers. The teacher who was proctoring his exam was my father’s student. Thus I grabbed some money, sought out GuangLing’s Doctor Wu, and went to see him. Doctor Wu’s teacher worked in one of the greatest hospitals, Xiao Cheng-daren you must’ve heard his name before. Therefore he’s considered the best doctor in GuangLing. When he went to take a look at his illness, not only was it incurable, it was already deteriorating.”

Huai Yu corrected, “A sickened body does not deteriorate in the beginning, instead it means that they’ve reached the midway point of the disease. In the beginning, the disease stimulates the mind like they’ve just been injected with chicken blood*, making them unable to sleep with nowhere to vent their energy. It’s only afterward that the body begins to decline, once again becoming rigid.”

(TN: In simple terms, it just means to get excited.)

Hearing this, Zhu ChuanKang truly didn’t pay attention to what the illness looked like when it first began. Now that he heard Huai Yu mention it, he suddenly realized, “Daren is correct, I didn’t notice this at all.”

When Ming ChangYan heard here, he interjected, “Afterwards was the entire body rigid, their eyes unable to see and mouths unable to move? Where their five visceras fester causing organ failure, with their corpses looking like they were 70 to 80 years old?”

Zhu ChuanKang replied, “Correct. I have never seen these sorts of symptoms before in an outbreak. If it was an ordinary epidemic, all you have to do is lock up the infected individuals and take care of them, but…..”

Ming ChangYan asked, “But what?”

Zhu ChuanKang continued, “But the town’s shaman used a tortoise shell to make a divination, saying that when Graduate Zhou fell into the YanDang river he agitated the river god. The river god was angered and descended the epidemic from Heaven down to punish the common people. Only by giving He Bo a favorable woman for him to marry, will they be able to subdue his anger.”

Ming ChangYan said, “That’s a load of bullshit!”

Cheng MingLi said, “Zhu-shixiong, how do you plan on preventing these innocent young ladies from throwing their lives away for such a preposterous reason?”

Zhu ChuanKang said, “If I had been successful in my preventions, then I would’ve already done so. The citizens in GuangLing are anxious, the shaman is exploiting them by using the idea of gods and demons to make the people unable to distinguish between good and evil. Me showing up to prevent it is the same as a bureaucrat employing prejudiced power. To not conceal anything to these Daren, within a month there’s already been multiple riots. This official is incompetent.”

Ming ChangYan reassured, “There’s no reason for you to blame yourself. The superstitions within GuangLing is all due to the emperor anyway, it’s not like it’s uncommon. During critical moments, the doctors are of no help. What else can you do except pray to Gods and Buddhas?”

Zhu ChuanKang glimpsed at him and saw Ming ChangYan dressed in original clothing, his words wanton and unrestrained. The moment he opened his mouth it’s ‘what the emperor did’, ‘what the emperor should do’. But the most pivotal detail was that among the people present, he was the only one who thought the other’s actions were disrespectful, while the remainder acted like they didn’t hear anything.

The four had already stopped at the bottom of the inn where the Imperial bodyguards responsible for guarding Cheng MingLi were waiting.

But Ming ChangYan had no intention of going upstairs, rather he happily smiled, “Huai Yu, this is your line of work. Go go go, let’s go take a look at that shaman!”

After taking barely two steps, his collar was pulled back by Huai Yu.

Ming ChangYan joined his limbs together, miserably shouting, “MURDER!!”

Zhu ChuanKang was astonished, “This…..”

Cheng MingLi had already been traveling with Huai Yu and Ming ChangYan for many days and was already used to this sort of scenery. He calmly waved his hand, “It’s nothing, just small matters.”

Huai Yu very seriously lifted him by the collar and hauled him upstairs through pushing and pulling. Ming ChangYan’s long legs stomped around creating thumping noises, adopting the manner of someone on their last breath and about to die. Suddenly, the area by the neck suddenly loosened. Ming ChangYan said, “Rude and unreasonable! What kind of young missy attitude are you playing at!”

Huai Yu nobly sat in front of the table and poured a cup of tea.

Ming ChangYan was taciturn in the room. Determination erupted in the silence, thus he raised his feet and began walking towards the doorway. When he arrived at the doorway, Huai Yu coldly said, “I prohibit you to go.”

“So unreasonable!”

“You’re the one who’s not keeping their promise.” Huai Yu stood up and said, “In short, right now you can only listen to me.”

Ming ChangYan secretly thought: Such an overbearing little brat. If it wasn’t because this ShaoXia isn’t able to defeat him right now, I would’ve already hung him up and beat him!

Instead, he said, “Why should I listen to you?”

Huai Yu appeared to be very angry, letting out a humph, choosing to ignore him. He lied down on the bed, pulled up the quilt, and covered his head. After a while, a muffled voice came from the quilt, “Think for yourself.”

Ming ChangYan could only sit back down on the stool. Heaving a deep sigh, he thought: Taking a wife home isn’t even as difficult as coaxing him.

After thinking about it, he consoled himself: As a child, he was raised in the imperial palace, it’s inevitable that he’s at least a little arrogant. Since I want to be friends with him and is older than him by a few years, I naturally should have a bit of patience towards him.

While he was comforting himself, Ming ChangYan couldn’t help but begin to follow Huai Yu’s reasoning: He was the one who had promised to listen to his words.

But after this sort of disastrous thinking, he began to recall countless old debts all regarding the time he spent at the imperial palace. For the purpose of leaving the palace, he kept saying multiple lies.

Such as: Recognizing him as his Da-ge, ‘If Da-ge says one I definitely won’t say two’; ‘Everything will be done according to your demands’, ‘I’ll listen to whatever you say’.

Ming ChangYan didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry. When he said those words, they were mere words of praise that his brain came up with to coax him. Who would’ve imagined that Huai Yu took them so earnestly and in spite of everything still kept them in his heart? And now after remembering them to this moment, he wanted atonement.

After realizing his wrongdoings, he didn’t dare walk out of the room. So he simply sat by the bedside and tugged a little at Huai Yu’s quilt.

“Ai, Gege, Huai Yu-gege, Huai Yu-dage, Dear da-ge, I was wrong, I was truly wrong this time.”

“Say something, Huai Yu are you asleep?”

“Ok ok ok, you’re right, I’ll listen to everything you say okay?”

There was finally some movement in the quilt.

Huai Yu finally mercifully sat up and very slowly met his eyes, forgiving him.

Ming ChangYan swore, “I’ve really remembered it now! I definitely won’t forget it!”

After he finished pledging his oath, loud noises erupted from downstairs. The inn the two were staying at was located at the heart of GuangLing, with one of the top three inns located directly across from them. The top locations within the Central Plains where one could eat, drink, and play was divided into five areas. Among them, the inns in the Central Plains that provided top-notch comfort were less than one hundred.

Before GuangLing was plagued by the epidemic it was a large trading city, and therefore had one of those inns. Ming ChangYan was very well-acquainted with these since he himself was from Kyoto and because Xiao Cheng-daren had well informed him. Xiao Cheng-daren had also gossiped: The Young Prime Minister this person must live in these inns and must wear golden silk. No matter how expensive or delicious the food is, the moment they’re served to him he won’t take any more than three bites and he doesn’t order more than three dishes. In brief, he’s extremely picky.

Huai Yu doesn’t like eating full meals but has a passion for snacks. His parcel filled to the brim with pine nut cakes, eating them from Kyoto to GuangLing, not once stopping. He probably thought that this was too childish and therefore to save his reputation as Da-ge, Huai Yu stealthily ate them behind Ming ChangYan’s back. Unfortunately, Ming ShaoXia had the eyesight of a hawk and had already seen through his little tricks. Even though he saw through them he didn’t say anything about it, and in addition, even observed him for a few days before coming to the verdict: This brat’s favorite food must be osmanthus cake.

At this moment, the noise that was coming from downstairs now came from the inn right across from them. Ming ChangYan opened the window to watch, taking in the scenery from both sides of the street. Four Buddhist monks draped in black and white robes were pressing down a black-clothed man on the ground while violently beating him.

Ming ChangYan faintly smiled, “The bald monkeys from XiaoHan Temple. It’s inevitable to clash with enemies, how come I run into them the moment I come out!”

One of the monks said, “Grab him and take him back!”

Ming ChangYan gently chuckled, “Look, is this something a monk with benevolence in their heart would behave? They’re practically mercenaries!”

Hearing his Huai Yu suddenly asked, “What’s a mercenary?”

Ming ChangYan laughed before he abruptly jumped down from the three-floored building. Huai Yu quickly reached out to catch him but only managed to grab a piece of his jacket. Quickly, the corner of his jacket slipped out from his hands. Ming ChangYan fell to the ground and without saying anything further, raised his leg up and kicked. One kick for each of the four monks. His leg moved at lightning speed, making the monks fall down and almost piss themselves in terror. They angrily crawled up and pointed their fingers at Ming ChangYan.

He patted his hands, extremely arrogant, extremely overbearing, extremely unreasonable.

While he was busy, he found the time to lift his head and gave Huai Yu a wicked smile, “This is the Mercenary sect.”

After saying this, without distinguishing between right or wrong, he gave each old monk a fist to the head.
