A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 20

Chapter 20: A Fallen Gentleman – Part 9

Translated and Edited by: Ritpoppy

(Note: This chapter starts off with a flashback)

The window was knocked three times, a nightingale chirped three times, suddenly, a bedroom window was pushed open from the outside.

A pair of a young maiden’s hands, which were as pale as jade, emerged from the darkness. The chirps of the nightingale that was perched by a big laurel tree got louder, she listened for a while, and hesitantly shouted, “Brother?”

All of a sudden, from atop a tree hanged a young man dressed in black, he was pale and grave, with his hands crossed, wearing a smiling expression.

This person, was precisely Ming ChangYan. He said, “Yi Yue, are you hungry?”

“Brother!” Yi Yue’s red-ish brown eyes lit up, extending her arms, wanting to give him a hug. Ming ChangYan was afraid that she was going to fall from her room, promptly turning over and jumped down from the laurel tree.

He entered the room from the window, Yi Yue ignited a lamp, in a split second the room was brightly lit.

Ming ChangYan hadn’t seen her in a year, thus he took a few steps back, trying to get a good look at her. Yi Yue was wearing a muslin dress distinct to Tokhara, her long black hair was rolled up into a bun, she had the picturesque of a delicate maiden; she was beautiful in appearance, like a fairy, charming and romantic.

Yi Yue sat in front of the table, and poured a bowl of sheep’s milk, “Is brother thirsty?”

Ming ChangYan sat down, smiling, “You’ve gotten a bit fatter.”

Yi Yue said, “Wait till I grow even fatter, then brother will be able to see what he’d look like if he was fat.”

Ming ChangYan drained the goat milk down in one gulp, flipping over the bundle and dropping a large amount of rouge and cosmetic powders that he had bought in the Central Plains. These little things could be found everywhere in Lin’an, and couldn’t be counted as anything rare, but Yi Yue has never taken a single step outside of Tokhara, no matter what Ming ChangYan would bring her, she would always regard it as something precious.

Yi Yue unscrewed the lid, scooped up some of the rouge, and wiped it on her lips, “The ones that brother brought me last year have all been used up. Do you apply it like this? What about this black paint, is it used on the lips?”

Ming ChangYan said, “This is used on the eyebrows. Come over here, I’ll teach you how to apply it.”

Yi Yue said, “You know how to apply them? These are stuff used by young women from the Central Plains.”

Ming ChangYan cocked his eyebrow, “Don’t underestimate your brother, is there anything that he can’t do!”

The two changed positions, Yi Yue sat in front of the mirror, while Ming ChangYan held the black dye that was in a shell, and began to lightly apply it on her eyebrow. Within the mirror, the two’s appearance was identical, both naturally beautiful, they were a pair of twins that were so close that it was difficult to tell the two apart.

When he was finished with the makeup, Yi Yue said, “Brother draws the ugliest eyebrows.”

Ming ChangYan flicked her forehead, “So picky, next time you demand me to draw them for you, I’m not doing it.”

Yi Yue stood up and twirled in front of the mirror, the four bells around her hands and feet jingled.

“Brother, when are you going to bring me to the Central Plains? You said it last year, and the year before that, you always lie to me.”

Ming ChangYan felt injustice, “You’ve wronged me.” He said, “Just wait one more year and I’ll be able to bring you to the Central Plains. If I recall, the Moon-Chasing Festival is about to begin, have you mastered the dance yet? If by any chance you dance like when we were little, forgetting the steps halfway through, A-Ba* will tie you up and beat you.”

(TN: A-Ba means father but in a dialect. Similarly, A-Niang will mean mother)

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, any repost of this is stolen and if you steal my work I will slap you with my miniature fan.

Yi Yue giggled, “The one being tied up and beat by A-Ba is brother, you’re confusing right and wrong.”

Ming ChangYan smiled as well, “Wasn’t me getting hit all because I wanted to help you, you little ingrate. If it weren’t for you coming to me crying that you couldn’t dance well, why would I go up there and dance pretending to be you?”

Yi Yue said, “You and I look exactly the same, who would be able to tell us apart.” She thought for a moment, and said, “Only A-Niang could tell us apart.”

Ming ChangYan ate two pastries, “A-Niang has already been gone for years, there is no purpose for us to remain at Tokhara. When this year’s Moon-Chasing Festival is over, I’ll bring you to the Central Plains.”

Yi Yue looked towards the jade pendant hanging by his waist, and asked, “What is this, it’s quite pretty.”

Ming ChangYan replied, “Ah, something that my younger disciples gave me. What, do you like it? Then I’ll give it to you.”

Immediately, he went to untie it. Yi Yue shook her head, “I don’t want it, when I go to the Central Plains, brother can buy me a new one.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Of course, I’ll buy as much as you want. Right, there’s also this.” Ming ChangYan took out two small wooden combs, beautiful and exquisitely crafted, “Give this to Little Bell, and this to Little Dice. I promised last year that I’d bring something for them, give it to them when they attend to you tomorrow morning. Don’t tell them that I came.”

Yi Yue pushed one of the combs back at Ming ChangYan, “One is enough. Little Dice was killed by A-Ba.”

Ming ChangYan froze.

“I don’t like A-Ba. His temper is getting worse and worse, he keeps on killing people. Please bring me with you, Brother, can we leave this year? And bring Little Bell together with us, when A-Ba killed Little Dice, she was really frightened.”

Ming Changyan was brought back to reality, rubbing his hands through her hair, and exclaimed, “Not this year. My foundation in the Central Plains isn’t stable yet, I still need one more year to have the ability to quietly take you away. If I bring you this year, I wouldn’t be able to guarantee your safety. Wait one more year, next year I’ll be able to contend against A-Ba.”

Although Ming ChangYan said this, he knew in his heart, it was because TianQing’s situation in the Central Plains was more serious than he’d explained. His intuition is telling him right now isn’t the best time to bring Yi Yue to the Central Plains.

Yi Yue leaned on the table, using her hand to fiddle with the teacup, “I don’t like the moon, it’s too big, too boring.”

Ming ChangYan saw that her spirits were low, so he changed the topic, and said, “Guess who I met when I came back from the Wu’an Tribe today? The warriors from Wu’an were hunting in the forest, the one that had the most kills….”

He was deliberately mystifying his words, and sure enough, when Yi Yue heard the 3 words Wu’an Tribe, she impatiently looked towards his direction.”

Ming ChangYan continued, “Do you wanna guess who it was?”

Yi Yue said, “Was it Bu Feng?”

Ming ChangYan teased, “It was my brother-in-law.”

Yi Yue’s face was red, muttering, “You’re making fun of me.”

Ming ChangYan said, “I wouldn’t dare, I wouldn’t dare. I really did run into Bu Feng, he had hunted a small deer, and said that he wanted to make the antlers into jewelry and gift them to you. Ah, there’s also this.”

He took out a quill pen from his bosom, “Bu Feng trusted me to give this to you. Your pen broke, right? He said that you haven’t written him a letter in a while.”

Yi Yue put the pen away, and said, “Brother always teases me. But you’ve stayed in the Central Plains for so long, why haven’t you found me a sister-in-law yet?”

Ming ChangYan raised his foot and placed it on the table, laughing, “I didn’t find you a sister-in-law, but I do have a bunch of little children.”

Yi Yue’s voice had traces of yearning in them, “When I finally arrive at TianQing sect, I also want to study martial arts. Dancing is boring, it’s always the same dance. Dancing year after year, after dancing for so long, my legs are going to break.”

Ming ChangYan said, “The Moon-Chasing Festival happens once a year, it cannot be helped that you have to dance. However, when you come to the Central Plains in the future, I’ll teach you martial arts.”

Yi Yue picked up an ancient book from her bed, on it read《The Goddess’s Big Book of Songs》, in it were tunes that were to be sung at the Moon-Chasing Festival. When Ming ChangYan saw this book, he felt exceptionally familiar to it. He studied this book together with Yi Yue when they were younger, because he was a man, the shamans only required him to recite every page of the book from memory, but Yi Yue had to learn the dances as well.

Ming ChangYan still wanted to tell Yi Yue some of his incidents from the Central Plains, but the tip of his nose twitched, and he smelled a muffled fragrance.

“Yi Yue, what did you light in your room, why is there an aroma?”

Yi Yue didn’t reply, Ming ChangYan raised his head, but all he saw were blurs. He yelled, “Yi Yue?”

Ming ChangYan rubbed his eyes and woke up.

Fu Ling was twisting a handkerchief and was flabbergasted, “ShaoShi woke up!”

Ming ChangYan sat up, his hair was leisurely scattered down his back. The fragrance was even stronger, he asked, “Was Huai Yu here?”

Fu Ling handed him the handkerchief, “The Young Prime Minister just left.”

Ming ChangYan let out a sigh, “No wonder.”

Fu Ling observed his facial expression, “ShaoShi, do you feel any sorts of uncomfort in your heart?”

Ming ChangYan waved his hands, “No. I just had a dream, and dreamed about some previous affairs back at home.”

Fu Ling draped his clothes over him, “So it turns out it was homesickness. Many imperial concubines in the palace feel homesick, after ShaoShi serves the emperor, and climb the ranks, you’d be able to invite the Lord and Madam to the palace to stay for a few days.”

Ming ChangYan didn’t listen to her nonsense, and was still immersed in his dreamland. It wasn’t long after he came back to the Central Plains that TianQing had an accident. He was purged by the 6 major sects, then fell into the YanBo River. Luckily he escaped the calamity, yet in his dizziness two years had passed. When he woke up, he suffered from traumatic amnesia, a portion of his past affairs was already gone from his memory.

Thinking about this, Ming ChangYan sighed.

Next time? When will there be a next time? He hasn’t visited Tokhara in two years, and doesn’t know whether or not Yi Yue will blame him. He’s already become a handicapped person these days, don’t even mention taking Yi Yue to the Central Plains and protecting her, he was like a clay Bodhisattva crossing a river, it would be hard to say if he could even protect himself. It’s because of this, that Ming ChangYan was so desperate to get a hold of the Immortal Grass. He must quickly find out the truth behind the events that occurred two years ago. Who framed him? Who killed Wan QianQiu?”

While he was deep in his thoughts, suddenly, he felt a pain from his nape. Ming ChangYan inhaled a breath of cold air, promptly resting his hands on the back of his neck, a bulging lump was wriggling up and down. His ten fingers ache and swelling, like something was about to break open his flesh and come out.

“Fu Ling! Give me a knife! Any knife will do!”

Fu Ling was startled by his loud voice, and said in a panic, “ShaoShi, there are no knives in the palace.”

Ming ChangYan, “Any sharp object will do as well, give me the hairpin in your hair, then go grab a basin for me!”

Fu Ling saw that he was dripping in cold sweat, his complexion deathly pale, and his lips completely lacking in color, she didn’t dare delay a second longer and took off her hairpin. She carried the basin and sat right beside Ming ChangYan.

Ming ChangYan lied on top of the bed, grasping onto the hairpin, he didn’t hesitate before he dug into his fingertips. He exerted a large amount of force, so fiercely that it ripped the flesh open causing the blood to drip out in streams. He pricked all ten of his fingers at once; when the Fu Ling who was sitting on the sidelines saw this scene, her hair stood up on one end and screeched. She retreated back a step and fell on the floor, covering her mouth with her hand while trembling with fear. Ming ChangYan’s complexion changed like he was accustomed to his matter, treating the matter like it was a complete walk in the park as he skillfully jabbed all ten of his fingers.

After a while, a blood clot fell into the basin: It was thick, black, and filthy. Just like poisonous blood.

After Ming ChangYan finished all this, he raised his head to look towards Fu Ling, “Only you and I can know of the events of today. You must not mention this to anyone, not even Peony.”

Fu Ling swallowed her saliva as she slowly crawled up from the ground, “ShaoShi, why is ShaoShi….”

Ming ChangYan said, “Oh, it’s nothing serious, just some chronic problem. I was accidentally seen by you today, remember to keep it a secret for me.”

Fu Ling nodded her head, then suddenly said, “ShaoShi, I’m going to get you some medicine!”

She hurriedly went out to grab some gauze and medical powder. After Ming ChangYan received the items and declined Fu Ling’s help. He tore the cloth and smeared medicine on it and dexterously wrapped a few unsightly bandages over the lump.

The wound was too big, even after Ming ChangYan wrapped it 3 to 4 times, the blood from the wound soaked through the gauze. Fu Ling suggested, “ShaoShi, how about we call the Young Prime Minister over.”

Ming ChangYan bit the end of the gauze, tearing it at one end and wrapping it in the other. He ambiguously said, “Why should we call him over?”

Fu Ling said, “The past few days when ShaoShi was unconscious, it was always the Young Prime Minister that came to take care of you. The two of you seem to have a good relationship with one another, why not call him over one more time.”

Ming ChangYan sighed and smiled, “Fu Ling, I’ve already told him early on that we have no business with each other. Him coming to take care of me, this ShaoXia- this ShaoShi will engrave it into her heart and return the kindness one day. But asking me to take the initiative to look for him, impossible! You saw it for yourself, I’ve already said all the words I need to say a few days ago. If I go and find him, wouldn’t that make me lose face?”

Fu Ling mumbled to herself, “Pride may be a small matter, but your health is crucial.”

Ming ChangYan said, “That won’t do, that won’t do. In this house, having face is more important! Stop mentioning him.”

Between his words he had already finished wrapping all of his fingers. Ming ChangYan took a glance outside and saw that that sky was already dark. He said, “Besides, the sky’s already so dark, going would be a bother for him. It’s not something a gentleman should do.”

Fu Ling could only agree, she carried the basin out to dump out the blood. Just as she opened the door, Peony was already waiting in front of the door. Seeing Fu Ling, she smiled, “Fu Ling, look who’s here!”

A palace eunuch was slouching, his brows and eyes had the traces of a smile, “Is Yan ShaoShi here?”

Fu Ling said, “She’s here, what is GongGong doing here?”

The eunuch, “This servant is Li XiShan from the Venerable House of Affairs*.”

(TN: “敬事房”; a place in the imperial palace that handles affairs that relate to concubines and eunuchs. Doesn’t deal with death, just personal affairs.)

Fu Ling and Peony exchanged a glance with each other, they smiled, “So it’s Li GongGong! Please come in, my family’s mistress is right inside.”

Peony yelled, “ShaoShi! Someone from the Venerable House of Affairs is here!”

Ming ChangYan didn’t pay any attention to them, and was busy blowing on his fingers so that the blood dried faster. Hearing Peony’s cheerful tone, he said, “So what if someone came, what are you so happy for?”

Li XiShan said, “When ShaoShi hears what this servant has to say, you’ll be happy as well.” He grinned, “His Majesty flipped over your plaque tonight.”

Ming ChangYan said, “His Majesty? His Majesty flipped over my plaque? Fu Ling, what does this mean? What plaque of mine is with the emperor?”

Li XiShan saw Ming ChangYan was very ‘innocent’, he looked at the two women and smiled, “Milady, when the emperor flips over your plaque, it means that you going to attend to the emperor tonight.”

Attend to the emperor. Ming ChangYan finally understood the meaning behind these words.

Half a pillar of incense had already burned down before Ming ChangYan slowly said, “I’m attending to the emperor?”

Li XiShan nodded his head, “This servant will come pick up Milady at nine.”

Ming ChangYan contemplated for a while, before saying, “Okay, I got it. Let me tidy up a bit before going.”

Li XiShan left. Fu Ling smiled, “Good, this is great! ShaoShi, what are you tidying up for, is it to change your clothes?”

Peony laughed, “It doesn’t matter whether or not she changes her clothes. It’s not like the emperor is going to be looking at her clothes!”

Ming ChangYan stood up and climbed off the bed before saying, “I’m going to the Ninety-Ninth Temple.”

Fu Ling paused, “What is ShaoShi going to the Ninety-Ninth Temple for?”

Ming ChangYan, “What else could I be going there for? To find Huai Yu!”

Peony said, “But, but ShaoShi is to attend to the emperor tonight. Instead of going to the emperor, what are you doing visiting the Young Prime Minister for….”

Ming ChangYan said, “Because I want to. Get out of the way and don’t follow after me. Remember, is that eunuch comes, stall him for me, I’ll be back as quick as I can.”

Fu Ling urgently said, “But didn’t ShaoShi say that you and the Young Prime Minister should mind their own businesses and that taking the initiative to go look for him will cause you to lose your face?”

Ming ChangYan covered his face, “Pride may be a small matter, but health is crucial!”

He wanted to open the door, but felt that this way of strutting out was a bit inappropriate. So he turned around to face the window, pushing it open and look around to see if anyone was near. One of Ming ChangYan’s legs straddled over, Fu Ling yelled, “ShaoShi! You want to jump out of the window!”

Ming ChangYan fluttered down, “Wrong, I’ve already jumped out of the window.”

On the ChangPing Palace Corridor, the blur of a white figure could be seen wildly running towards the Ninety-Ninth Temple.

Summary:

The person with the best martial art skill in the world, whose prestige is unparalleled. The head disciple of TianQing sect, the leading sect of all Six Great sects, and Jianghu’s number one, Ming ChangYan shaoxia.

During a decisive battle, he slipped and fell.

His ten years of cultivation was completely annihilated and reduced to a normal human.

Fortunately, he was lucky enough to have fate decide that his life shouldn’t end there, and he survived.

The doctor told him, “To gain back your cultivation, enter the palace as a concubine!”

In order to get the medical herb that was given to the emperor by the XiYu Region, the immortal’s grass, Ming shaoxia could only wear a skirt, apply makeup, endure the humiliation, suffer patiently, and join the palace drama.

Ming ChangYan: This shaoxia is shameless.

Unfortunately, just as he dressed up in drag and entered the palace, he meets the man he once picked up from under a mountain.

…..

Ming ChangYan: I was joking just now…..this is too shameless!

If I were to be found out by him, my (old) number one reputation would go down the drain!

Chapter 19: Fallen Gentleman – Part 8

Translated by: Kestrel

Edited by: Ritpoppy

Everyone knew that aside from Ming ChangYan, there was no other person on this earth who had ever been able to pull out this sword. So if this person had pulled it out, there were only two possible explanations.

One: This was Ming ChangYan himself.

Two: This was someone with even greater innate talent than Ming ChangYan.

In every case that the Common People’s Order recognized a master, the next person to take up that position would without exception need to be more valiant than the previous to be capable of drawing the sword. If someone was able to draw the Common People’s Order from its sheath, then it would abandon its previous master. Consequently, over the last hundred years, the more time passed, the more difficult it became to draw out the Common People’s Order. Before the Noble Gentleman, it had been without a master for a full forty years!

And now, before everybody’s eyes, the Common People’s Order had actually been pulled out by a tiny imperial concubine; this had to be the greatest comedy in all the world. If this wasn’t Ming ChangYan, then why would someone with such great talent sneak into the imperial palace disguised as an ordinary concubine?

A-Jun shouted out, “Duan Duan! Stop! Who told you to actually fight her!?”

Duan Duan just stood there silently, giving off something of an innocent impression. A-Jun didn’t have the heart to scold him too heavily; she reached up on tiptoes to rub his head, placating him, “Alright, it’s my fault, I was too hard on you.”

The old wet nurse said, “Lord Duan isn’t fully mentally sound, and so you can’t blame him for not knowing how to hold back when he gets to doing something. Your Highness clearly told him to exchange blows with that little concubine. It was he who misunderstood, how could the princess be at fault?”

A-Jun turned to look at Huai Yu, who looked as cold as ever, she pursed her lips, lowering her head as she spoke, “Huai Yu ge-ge…”

Zhao XiaoLan came back to himself then, and shouted, “Yan jie-jie just pulled out the Common People’s Order! I saw her!”

A-Jun said, “Zhao XiaoLan! What are you yelling for!” She walked towards Ming ChangYan, saw that the other’s front was covered in blood, and realized it must have been what was spat out earlier. A-Jun wrung the edge of her dress as she quickly and quietly said, “I’m sorry! I’ll go call the doctor for you.”

Just then, the Eldest Prince and his bodyguard arrived.

“It’s quite lively here, what are all of you talking about?”

A-Jun called out, “Huang-xiong, we’re flying kites!”

“There have been so many deaths by vengeful spirits within the palace these past few days, the number of imperial bodyguards has more than doubled, and yet you and XiaoLan can still find the mood to stand here flying kites.”

The Third Prince came up by his side, opening a folding fan as he spoke, “Did I hear XiaoLan say The Common People’s Order just now? What Common People’s Order?”

The Eldest Prince’s smile froze, his face paling in an instant.

Zhao XiaoLan went quiet, “I-I never said that…”

The fact that the Eldest Prince had taken imperial troops with him to purge Ming ChangYan years ago was commonly known throughout the court. After Ming ChangYan’s ghost returned to haunt them, the third to die was the eldest prince’s birth mother, Imperial Concubine Yuan. Now that the Eldest Prince had been brought back to the imperial palace, rumors were flying through the chambers of the imperial concubines as heavily as falling snow, all hinting that the prince would be the ghost’s next target.

Zhao XiaoLan had heard a little bit of this as well, and knew that his oldest cousin could not bear to hear even the tiniest mention of Ming ChangYan-related things, believing every rumor he came across. As soon as he heard something, he would undoubtedly grab hold of the relevant people and ask them for every detail. He therefore knew perfectly well he’d blurted out something he shouldn’t have, and shut his mouth, refusing to speak.

A-Jun didn’t know any of these details, and straightforwardly said, “She pulled out the sword at Huai Yu ge-ge’s waist, what about it? All this fuss over nothing, it’s fine since she put it back, isn’t it!”

The Eldest Prince’s gaze turned cold as he looked in the direction of Huai Yu’s waist, recognizing at a glance that this sword was The Common People’s Order.

“Who drew the sword!”

A-Jun was frightened by his reaction, quickly pointing to Ming ChangYan, “She did it.”

Ming ChangYan felt a sharp pain in his chest, and feared he might spit out more blood if he opened his mouth again. Huai Yu said, “It’s a fake sword. With how important The Common People’s Order is, I had people make a few counterfeits to mislead people; the one I am carrying on me now is one of them.”

The Eldest Prince relaxed at that, then spoke again, “A counterfeit? You’re right, there isn’t anyone in this country who wouldn’t want this thing. Your careful deliberations are good as always, Young Prime Minister.”

He lifted his head, glancing at Ming ChangYan, and seeing that he was a girl, felt even more willing to believe Huai Yu’s words.

Zhao XiaoLan tilted his head, muttering to himself, “A counterfeit? It looks so much like the real thing, though.”

The Third Prince said, “There have been too many disturbances within the palace of late; A-Jun and XiaoLan should be particularly careful, and try not to run around without good reason.”

A-Jun said, “I have Duan Duan to protect me, I’m not afraid. If I stayed locked up within the imperial palace, I’d die of boredom! Third Brother, where are you two going?”

The third prince said: “Your Eldest Brother and I are going to Daming Palace; there’s been a plague in GuangLing, and a popular tradition among the locals there is to offer brides to He Bo* to appease the god’s anger. Many innocent young girls have already died, a fact which has given our father quite a headache.”

A-Jun said, “Go ahead and go, then. Third Brother, I still think you and Eldest Brother should have a talk with Father, he’s really too superstitious, with how much he encourages those cultivators and their magic.”

The Third Prince knocked on A-Jun’s head with his fan, “Honestly now, you know our father’s thoughts are not something you nor I can control.”

He glanced over at Huai Yu, offering him a smile, “Young Prime Minister, we’ll bid you farewell for now.”

As Huai Yu nodded, the Third Prince’s gaze fell back down onto Ming ChangYan, the smile not leaving his face as he continued, “Before I go – forgive me for being blunt, but as she is one of my father’s concubines, might not the Young Prime Minister’s current action be considered somewhat inappropriate?”

Ming ChangYan thought: Concubine? Who’re you calling a concubine?

Immediately following that, he suddenly realized. Huai Yu coldly said, “Let go.”

At his words, Ming ChangYan jumped off of him.

After the Eldest Prince left, a very young concubine said, “A-Jun, are you still going to fly kites?”

A-Jun waved a hand, “No, no more kites, in a moment I’m going to the academy to deliver a few things for Teacher Liu!”

Ming ChangYan’s mind started to move as soon as he heard that.

A-Jun stepped forward, deeply concerned, “Hey, I’m really sorry for what happened just now. Are you feeling a little better?”

Ming ChangYan brushed off his dress, asking, “Are you talking to me?”

A-Jun, “Obviously! Who else would I be talking to?”

Ming ChangYan put his hands over his chest, “I’m perfectly fine, a mouthful of blood is nothing, spit enough of it and you get used to it. But if you’re feeling sorry about it, then promise me one thing. Though I’m afraid if I say it you might not be able to manage it!”

A-Jun humphed at that, “Not just one, I could answer a hundred with no problem, there’s nothing I can’t manage!”

Ming ChangYan immediately gave Zhao XiaoLan a meaningful glance, only to get a huh? in response, and thought the word ‘stupid!’ to himself, before stepping up on his own, “You said you were going to Egret Academy, didn’t you? Do you think you could take me along? I promise I won’t cause any trouble!”

Before A-Jun could even answer, Huai Yu said, “Out of the question.”

Ming ChangYan was stunned, “Why not!”

Huai Yu let out a humph, “No means no.”

The two stared at each other for a moment, before Huai Yu suddenly lowered his voice, “Do you think dying once wasn’t enough?”

Ming ChangYan’s heart skipped a beat. He knew after pulling out The Common People’s Order that the little brat had most likely already figured out his identity, or else he wouldn’t have dodged the eldest prince’s questions with all that talk of counterfeits. Unfortunately, Ming ChangYan couldn’t for the life of him figure out Huai Yu’s reasons for helping him. Was it for old time’s sake? His reputation had been incredibly bad after he died, almost fallen to the level where everyone wanted him gone, so even if the other had any old affection to speak of for him, there probably wasn’t much of it.

Ming ChangYan said with a grin, “With those great medical skills of yours, you could just save me if it came down to it, couldn’t you!”

At that, Huai Yu suddenly said, “You think it’s that easy to save a dead man?”

Ming ChangYan tried to act clever, “I’m not dead yet, am I! Besides, you can’t control whether I go to Egret Academy or not. I already said yesterday, if anything happens from now on I won’t come bothering you about it, we’ll each of us mind our own business.”

Huai Yu listened to his words, and smiled, “I’d rather mind yours.”

The answer caused Ming ChangYan to choke, and he let out a fake-sounding laugh, “Are you saying want snacks? Begging isn’t a good thing to do, especially for a young prime minister like you – you’ve got all the clothes and food you need, so don’t go doing something so low as that.”

(TN: 要犯 (to [want to] break rules/commit a crime) and 要饭 (to beg for food) are both pronounced the same.)

He promptly threw off Huai Yu’s hand, grinning as he pulled closer to A-Jun, “A-Jun, take me with you to Egret Academy. One word from a real manly man is worth nine sacred tripods*. You’re a girl and not a rough-and-tough grown man, so we’ll cut it down and say you count as four-and-a-half tripods, but that’s still worth enough you can’t take it back, so take me with you!”

(TN: The Nine Tripod Cauldrons were symbols of the emperor’s god-gifted power, basically.)

A-Jun said, “This princess never takes back her word, if I say I’ll do it then I’ll do it!”

Zhao XiaoLan raised a hand, “Take me, I want to go too!” He then cast a furtive glance towards Huai Yu. Ming ChangYan grabbed his head and forced him to look forward again, “What’re you looking at your big brother for, forget him, we’re not taking him with us!”

A-Jun said, “I wonder though, what do you want to go to Egret Academy for?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Me, I want to go see the market with you!”

Just then, the old wet nurse spoke up, “Princess, Egret Academy has not had classes the past few days, and I’ve seen a few of the young princes all playing at the pleasure house; Teacher Liu is bound not to be at the academy, either.”

A-Jun became upset at hearing that, “If he’s not at the academy then where is he? I already told him I’d bring him a peace charm when I came back from praying at Dahan Temple, he’s always missing our meetings!”

Ming ChangYan was just about to speak when a fishy-sweet flavor bubbled up in his throat, and he spat out a mouthful of blood; immediately his vision went black, his nape hurting like it had been stuck full of needles.

Zhao XiaoLan yelled out, “Yan jie-jie!”

Seeing this, A-Jun said in a panicked voice, “What’s wrong with her? Why is she spitting blood again!”

Ming ChangYan pressed his hand to his nape, feeling the skin there suddenly move. Huai Yu stepped forward to support him, “You…”

Ming ChangYan’s full weight pressed down on his body as he panted, “Do you have a blade? Besides the one at your waist.”

Huai Yu was in no mood to listen to him, his left hand moved to check his pulse, only to discover that Ming ChangYan’s pulse was unsteady. He normally had no problems, able to eat and drink and sleep just fine, so most likely it was his pulling out the Common People’s Order a moment ago that had caused this adverse reaction. The Common People’s Order had always had extremely strong demonic energy; pushing his inner energy to forcefully draw the sword could only serve to hasten the flow of poison within his body.

Huai Yu made as if to carry him, but Ming ChangYan hurriedly said, “Don’t carry me like you would a woman.”

Huai Yu pondered a moment, then threw him over his shoulder. The pressure on his stomach caused Ming ChangYan to spit out more blood, making threatening gestures as he screeched, “Brat! Dearest senior! I’m begging you! You might as well carry me if you’re gonna do this!”

His head smacked against Huai Yu’s back, leaving him confused and disoriented. Huai Yu clicked his tongue, left with no choice but to tug him forward, meaning Ming ChangYan’s entire body was now sitting on his arm. Having become a ‘woman’ at present, he had a relatively short stature, and sitting felt a little better than getting carried; Ming ChangYan struggled a bit, delirious, then weakly said, “Fuck.”

A pair of hands reached out but found nothing to hold onto, only grabbing hold of the amber necklace around Huai Yu’s neck. The poison’s effects were growing stronger, running through Ming ChangYan’s entire body; he leaned near-unconscious against his shoulder, mumbling to himself, “This damn necklace sure is weird.”

He felt his way towards the amber hanging from the bottom, not forgetting to show appreciation despite barely being practically about to pass out: There’s no doubt the kid’s got money, to have a transparent rock this big…showing off his good looks, he’s got no shame!

With that, he finally laid down his head and fainted away.

After a while, Huai Yu wore a cold face as he applied medicine for Ming ChangYan.

“Huai Yu ge-ge, I was wrong.” Zhao XiaoLan sat upright and proper on the floor, not waiting for Huai Yu to cause trouble for him, he gained the initiative by deciding to strike first, hastily apologizing, “I’m truly wrong, I shouldn’t have come to the Ninety-Ninth Temple late at night, and I shouldn’t have been able to withstand Ming ShaoXia’s charms. Yan jie-jie promised me, as long as I bring her to the academy, she’ll give me Ming ShaoXia’s own handwritten works!”

“Ow ow ow!!” Ming ChangYan suddenly trembled, “What are you suddenly putting force on it for.”

Huai Yu, “Shut up.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Huai Yu ge-ge, I’m so sorry!”

Huai Yu gave him a quick glance, Zhao XiaoLan shivered, touching his nose and said, “Yan jie-jie wanted to go the academy, I couldn’t bring her there myself, so I could only come up with this plan.”

Huai Yu said, “What are you going to the academy for.”

Zhao XiaoLan had always been a little afraid of him, so he immediately began to narrate in specific detail without exception, “Yan jie-jie said she wants to go see a man.”

“Ouch! What are you pinching me again for!” Ming ChangYan suddenly withdrew his feet, “Okay, okay, okay, okay already, I’ll do it myself, if it wasn’t broken before it’s going to be broken by your kneading.”

Huai Yu suddenly used his hand strength, Ming ChangYan’s leg was grabbed and pulled over to him, the latter let out a quick burst of swear words, fumming, “My legs going to break!”

Zhao XiaoLan secretly glanced at Huai Yu, then glanced at Ming ChangYan, cleverly smiling as he said, “Huai Yu ge-ge, Yan jie-jie, how about, we go to the academy together.”

Huai Yu applied force onto Ming ShaoXia’s leg, fetching some ice cubes and bandages, wrapping his legs into a bundle. Ming ChangYan took the ice cubes, pressing it on his leg.

Zhao XiaoLan continued to talk to himself, “If Huai Yu ge-ge comes together with us, then we can directly leave the palace! You’re used to being able to freely enter and exit the palace, the 13 Guardians don’t dare to block your way…..”

His voice gradually softened.

Huai Yu’s face was cold as he said, “I won’t go.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Then…if you don’t want to go then you don’t want to go…then could you lend your jade pendant to me for a while, I’ll quickly return it to you….”

He eventually didn’t dare to utter another word.

Ming ChangYan felt guilty, and therefore didn’t say anything either. The atmosphere was silent for a short period of time before Huai Yu said, “Get out.”

Ming ChangYan looked up, and saw that Huai Yu had crossed both of his hands, looking down upon him. He let out a dry cough, remaining calm and collected as he stroked the sandalwood box. The box was in a square shape, its weight by no means light, if he wanted to secretly carry it away, it would be difficult.

Huai Yu repeated, “Get out.”

Ming ChangYan stood up, opening his mouth and said, “Okay, okay, okay, we’ll get out immediately. Don’t be angry, meeting together between friends is normal, this time I came to your house to play, next time you can come to Xian – The Small Lotus Terrace, I’ll definitely welcome you with tasty food and drinks.”

As he was talking, he wanted to link his arms around Huai Yu’s shoulders. But when Huai Yu coldly glanced at him, Ming ChangYan’s hand turned around midway, naturally landing on his chest, as he laughed out loud, “If you don’t want me to lean on you, then I won’t lean on you, what are you throwing a tantrum for, how old are you?”

Huai Yu kicked the books that had fallen beside his feet, turned his back around and began to walk back to his bed. Seeing this situation, Zhao XiaoLan promptly whispered, “Yan jie-jie, let’s go, Huai Yu ge-ge has always had a bad temper when he wakes up, it’s been like this since he was young, let’s stop provoking him!”

Ming ChangYan waved his hands around, merely treating the other’s words like it was simply a gust of wind. He took a step forward, and tugged on Huai Yu’s sleeves. The other party turned his hand over and shook him off, lifting the quilt, he burrowed himself in. He pulled the quilt over to cover his head, completing these actions all in one go. Ming ChangYan rubbed his hand, sitting beside the bed, he grinned, “Are you angry?”

“Ai, okay. Although me coming in here in the middle of the night to steal is very wrong, I know I made a mistake, hey, I said I know that I made a mistake.”

Ming ChangYan pulled at his quilt, eventually failing, thinking: After not meeting each other for two years, this little brat’s temper has actually become worse, it’s getting more and more difficult to coax him. Whatever, whatever.

He turned his gaze around, landing on sandalwood case lying on the ground. Ming ChangYan wasn’t able to coax him, his attempts rebuffed, yet he didn’t have any thoughts about losing hope with the Immortal Grass. He stooped down and seized it, but this time to his surprise, his arm was grabbed by Huai Yu.

Ming ChangYan let go of his grip, smiling, “It looked pretty, so I wanted to bring it up to study it for a bit, haha.”

Huai Yu sat up, “Weren’t you afraid of having an affair with me, you said it so sanctimoniously, how come you’ve decided to crawl into my bed now?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Young Prime Minister’s words are wrong, I’m not crawling into your bed, I’m sitting on your bed, sitting.”

He continued, “I’ll leave right now, I won’t bother you anymore.”

Huai Yu snorted, and said, “Coming and going as you please, do you think this place is your home.”

Ming ChangYan understood that his words had hidden meanings to them, and was afraid that this person is going to throw a tantrum again. In the early years, he’s witnessed Huai Yu’s little brat temper, when he gets riled up it was enough for him to drink several pots of it. The Ninety-Ninth Temple was cold and lonesome, its decorations tasteless and gloomy, white muslin fluttering around, making it look like a funeral hall. Just by looking at it, Ming ShaoXia thought: If he’s always lived in such a place, it really is too miserable. His short temper is pardonable, what am I doing lowering myself to argue with a child.

“It’s because our relationship is so good, that I think of this place as my home. You can also think of the Small Lotus Terrace as your home! I don’t mind!”

Ming ChangYan took a few steps back, feeling towards the doorway. Zhao XiaoLan was carrying a massive night pearl, not knowing what to do.

Ming ChangYan said, “What are you standing there for, go!”

Zhao XiaoLan was scared witless, “Are we really leaving, I think that Huai Yu ge-ge looks quite angry.”

“When is he not angry, this little brat,” Ming ChangYan muttered, right afterward he raised his voice, “Young Prime Minister! Disturbing you tonight was my fault, I apologize! I promise, I won’t come disturb you anymore, if I come again…if I come again I’ll write my name backwards!”

Zhao XiaoLan tugged on his sleeves, “You should stop talking, I feel like he’s gotten angrier.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Don’t bother with him, him getting angry is his business, I’ll say what I want to say. Help support me, my leg hurts.”

After taking two steps, Zhao XiaoLan asked, “But we didn’t get to steal the jade pendant this time, are you really going to stop disturbing him?”

Ming ChangYan flicked his forehead, “Of course I was lying to him!”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Lying isn’t good, Ming ShaoXia said….”

Ming ChangYan took a white steamed bun out from his chest, and blocked up his mouth. He said, “Ming ShaoXia said, shut up.”

On his trip to the Ninety-Ninth Temple, he didn’t obtain the jade pendant, but managed to steal a wooden case. At this moment, the case was situated upright in the middle of a table, Fu Ling pushed open the door to come in and saw that Ming ChangYan’s eyes were a hair’s breadth away from the box, his gaze fixated on it.

Fu Ling said, “You’ve been staring at this herb for hours now, has your staring produced some kind of trick yet?”

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, any repost of this is stolen and if you steal my work I’m going to make you bleed from the 5 orifices of your body.

Ming ChangYan said, “As of now, no.”

A few days ago, he thought that this herb had been the Immortal Grass, bringing it back with him to his residence. After studying it for a while, he didn’t dare come to a conclusion. No one on this earth has ever seen the appearance of the Immortal Grass before; he’s been thinking, but couldn’t confirm it, so he said, “Fu Ling, is there anywhere within the imperial palace that bears books?”

Fu Ling said, “There are no books in the imperial palace, but there are books at Egret Academy.”

Ming ChangYan clicked his tongue, it was because he couldn’t leave the palace, that he asked if the imperial palace had a library. In the end, he still has to pay a visit to Egret Academy.

While talking, Peony hurriedly rushed in, Fu Ling said, “What are you panting for, running around so urgently, is there a ghost chasing after you?”

Peony said, “The imperial bodyguards stationed beside the Eldest Prince has died.”

During these days, there were a lot of people dying in the palace, Fu Ling was already used to seeing these strange sights, calmly saying, “Dead?”

Peony nodded her head, “It’s the same method of death. The Eldest Prince is getting more and more convinced at the days go on, that it was that something gentleman’s ghost wanting to take his life. This time they even asked the Young Prime Minister to come to the Eastern Palace.”

Ming ChangYan originally wanted to take a look to see how his own ghost is killing people, but as soon as he heard that Huai Yu was there, it was like his legs were filled with lead, not wanting to move.

He threw himself back onto the bed, “I’m not going, I’m not going! What’s there to see!”

Peony said, “It’s better if ShaoShi doesn’t go see, all the deaths are nauseating to look at, when Xiao WanZi saw them, he was unable to eat for days. He’s always hating on the fact that he was born in the Imperial City, from the way I see it, even if he was born in Lin’an he wouldn’t be able to become a cultivator.”

Fu Ling, “You should stop saying so much. ShaoShi, the weather today is nice, Princess Yu Ning has invited the ShaoShi’s to the Small Totus Terrace to fly kites. Why don’t we take this opportunity to go out, and get some fresh air to clear our minds.”

Ming ChangYan, “The Small Totus Terrace? Isn’t the Small Lotus Terrace right here?”

Fu Ling said, “The Small Totus Terrace is large, ShaoShi is currently residing in the Listening Lotus Tower on the western side, there’s also a large garden on it’s eastern side where the best and most colorful lotus flowers bloom. Whenever Princess Yu Ning comes out to play, she is bound to always call Young Master XiaoLan with her. ShaoShi has a good relationship with Young Master XiaoLan, so I see no harm in you going out.”

Ming ChangYan was concerned with his matters with Egert Academy, so he got up and walked in the direction of the Small Lotus Terrace’s garden.”

After a quarter of an hour, he didn’t even see the person yet when he heard their voice. The sounding transmitting through his ears was the voice of a young maiden.

“Fly higher! Even higher! Duan Duan, come over here, I can’t see anymore, come lift me up!”

Closely following, were the voices of a few people, “Princess you mustn’t, such an act is dangerous, what if Young Master Duan can’t hold onto you.”

The young maiden said, “Are you old wet nurses calling me fat!”

Those old wet nurses promptly kneeled down, kowtowing a few times. Ming ChangYan thought: Which princess is this.

Across the rock garden, he was met with a crowd of girls, delicate maidens with matchless beauty. Their style of dress were all original, nothing like what palace maids would wear. The person in the center of the entire group was precisely that young maiden that had spoken earlier, she appeared no more than fifteen years old. She was currently sitting on the shoulders of a pale-skinned, stern-faced young man; in her hand was the string of the kite as she excitedly swayed her legs back and forth.

Zhao XiaoLan saw that he had arrived, immediately walking out of the crowd of imperial concubines, waving his hand, “Yan jie-jie!”

Ming ChangYan greeted, “XiaoLan-xiong, what a coincidence, we meet again!”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “It’s not a coincidence, I was just talking to A-Jun about you!”

It seemed like A-Jun was that young maiden’s name.

“Zhao XiaoLan! The little imperial concubine that you said knows martial arts, is it her? Her appearance isn’t too bad, unfortunately, she looks delicate and sweet, not at all like someone who can fight people!”

Ming ChangYan cupped his hands together and smiled, “Nice to meet you A-Jun. Are you XiaoLan’s friend?”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “She’s Princess Yu Ning, my younger cousin.”

Fu Ling reminded, “ShaoShi, you mustn’t follow after Young Master XiaoLan and call the princess A-Jun, that’s the princess’s childhood name, you must address her as princess.”

A-Jun hopped off of the shoulder of the stern-faced young man, patting her hands, she raised her voice, “Come over here, let me take a closer look. What kind of martial arts do you know, let this princess see!”

Ming ChangYan said, “If the princess wants to see, then I naturally have no objections. But I don’t have a sword, without a sword, how do I show you my martial arts!”

A-Jun said, “Duan Duan, give her your sword to use!”

Hearing this, Fu Ling’s complexion changed, kneeling down and said, “Princess, you absolutely cannot, sharp swords can injure people, my house’s ShaoShi is still a woman, there is definitely no possible way that she can use this sword. Moreover, if ShaoShi’s sword use is improper, it might be difficult to avoid harming others.”

A-Jun thought to herself for a moment, then said, “Alright then! We won’t use this sword for the time being, Cousin XiaoLan, let me borrow the wooden sword around your waist!”

When she finished talking, she proceeded to snatch the wooden sword from his waist, throwing it towards Ming ChangYan. The sword wasn’t heavy, and from the looks of it, was modeled after The Common People’s Order. Even though Ming ChangYan always had a sword strapped to his waist, he didn’t often use The Common People’s Order, and was still the best at using the needle and thread. But as he held the sword, he felt a familiarity in his heart.

A-Jun smiled, “Hurry up and try it!”

Deference is no substitute for obedience, so Ming ChangYan grabbed the sword and began to carry out his performance. His movements swift, graceful like a swimming dragon, his every move and style displayed that he was educated and exquisite in martial arts. Unfortunately, this sword dance – was way too slow!

It was like he was performing Tai Chi, no, Tai Chi doesn’t even go as slow as him. Changing a movement took 4 to 5 seconds, at this rate, how are you even supposed to take someone’s life. A-Jun yelled, “Ai! Why are you dancing so slow, those that know martial arts, aren’t they all as fast as the wind!”

Ming ChangYan slowly lifted his hand, while slowly lowering his feet, and said, “That’s other people, my sword techniques are special.”

A small imperial concubine said, “What’s so special about it? It’s especially slow!”

Ming ChangYan said, “No. This sword technique is called《To Moisten the Flowers and Beckon the Leaves*》, when using the sword technique, it’s necessary to meet eye to eye with your opponent, and cast flirting glances at them so that you can lure them over! It hurts the body’s soul, so the movements mustn’t be quick.”

(TN: “沾花惹草剑”; an idiom that means to womanize, sleeping around, to frequently enter brothels)

Ming ShaoXia thrust his sword forward, it’s tip pointing at a lotus, “When you use your sword you must be able to virtually pluck a flower, and from the sword be able to smell the fragrance of a woman.”

Finishing his words, he plucked a lotus flower, bringing it up to the tip of his nose to get a sniff, “So to enjoy the beautiful spring scenery*, you must show mercy in all respects, only like this can you truly capture the sword’s essence.

(TN: “寻花问柳”; another idiom that means to frequently visit brothels)

As the crowd of women heard his nonsense, their faces flushed crimson. A-Jun knew that the other party was amusing themselves, her face immediately blushed red, “You! You’re a young woman! Yet your way of talk is so, is so shameless!”

Zhao XiaoLan was originally content listening to it, and began to clap his hands and praise “Good swordplay, good swordplay”, but when A-Jun glared at him, Zhao XiaoLan could only insipidly withdraw his hands, resting them on the side of his legs.

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan was completely innocent as he shouted, “No, it was Princess that ordered me to perform this sword-dance, I only know this one sword technique, why do you argue that it’s shameless. This sword technique is performed this way, you don’t believe me? If you don’t believe me then why don’t you give it a go? I, will reluctantly take you in as my half apprentice.”

A-Jun was furious, “I want to see if you have the skill! Duan Duan, go and exchange a few blows with her!”

Ming ChangYan sheathed the wooden sword, secretly thinking that this little princess had an awfully bad temper, just like the Ninety-Ninth Temple’s Young Prime Minister. Those who have a bad temper, all look so beautiful.

Duan Duan was precisely the gloomy and pale young man from earlier. Ming ChangYan cautiously looked at him, and could only think that this person wasn’t angry, the splitting image of an ice-cold and delicate porcelain doll. The young man’s face was expressionless, seeming to be in a bad mood. Ming ChangYan thought: I’m dressed up as a woman right now, he’s a big strong man, he wouldn’t go this far to cause trouble for me, right?

Unexpectedly, the longsword was unsheathed!

Ming ChangYan recoiled a step back on reflex, the entirely black longsword struck the spot a hair’s breadth away from where he was standing. A strand of hair on his forehead was cut off, Ming ChangYan lifted his sword to face the other, but the wooden sword broke upon contact. The young man didn’t hit his mark in the first strike, in an instant, the second strike came down with a gale following after it, Ming ChangYan shook his sleeves, three needles promptly fell out.

“CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!”

In three quick sounds, the needles shot out like a rainbow, resisting against the longsword’s overbearing swings. Ming ChangYan was startled, with every strike he retreated backward, the two fighting hand to hand, he discovered that the other party wasn’t an idiot raised in the imperial palace: This person’s martial arts is brash and fierce, his moves deadly and cold as ice. Even in Lin’an, there wouldn’t be necessarily anyone who would be able to face him. Ming ChangYan almost couldn’t hold on for much longer.

Suddenly, his back abruptly bumped into someone, his shoulder was suddenly grabbed by them, a muddled fragrance assailed his nostrils. Ming ChangYan’s right hand subconsciously moved back for support, his hand brushing against a sword’s handle. This sword had a matchless familiarity towards him, and without even thinking, he unsheathed the sword.

In a split second, malicious energy vigorously rushed into his body. The sword was extremely overbearing, the sword was pulled out, colliding with the young man’s longsword. A-Jun’s complexion changed, yelling, “Duan Daun!”

Duan Duan jolted and took 4 to 5 steps back, Ming ChangYan had already vomited a mouthful of blood. At this moment, the back of his hand was grasped by an ice-cold hand, together he led his right hand and returned the sword back to its scabbard.

Zhao XiaoLan’s pupils shrank, his lips quivering, he was in shock as he said, “She, she just now, pulled out The Common People’s Order!!”

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 17

Chapter 17: Gentleman on a Roof Beam* – Part 1

(TN: “梁上君子”; translates to a gentleman on a room beam but means thief)

In gathering darkness, surrounded by silence, with high winds blowing in the black night – this was exactly the time for skulking about.

Suddenly, a pair of whispering voices could be heard coming from the depths of an alley between the palaces. The two were speaking with lowered voices, acting extremely cautious.

One of them said, “Yan jie-jie, are you done changing yet, it’s really dark here, I-I’m a little scared, let’s get going already.”

Ming ChangYan said, “You’re afraid of the dark? You can’t be the best fighter in the country if you’re afraid of the dark, you know.”

Zhao XiaoLan immediately changed his tune, “I’m not scared, I’m just worried you might be scared!”

Ming ChangYan slowly walked out, still tying his belt, “This outfit you got me sure looks familiar.”

Zhao XiaoLan smiled cutely, and said in an excited voice, “It’s a replica of Ming ShaoXia’s night walking outfit that I bought from LingLong Pavilion. I’ve never let anybody else wear it before, but I’m letting Yan jie-jie because you like Ming ShaoXia!”

Ming ChangYan could feel a tiny headache coming on, thinking to himself that though this Zhao XiaoLan was certainly great at earning affection, he had a real one-track mind, always Ming ShaoXia this or Ming ShaoXia that; it was both funny and extremely embarrassing.

Zhao XiaoLan had a wooden sword strapped to his waist, which swayed back and forth as he walked; Ming ChangYan traveled with him as they headed down the palace halls. He swayed his way down the straight and empty hallway with all the calm of someone taking a walk through a garden. Zhao XiaoLan, meanwhile, was totally immersed in the mood, hiding behind flower pots, crawling forward on the floor, “sneaking” all over the place with boundless energy. Every gust of wind or whisper of grass was treated like the appearance of some great enemy, prompting him to pull out his sword in defense.

Ming ShaoXia truly couldn’t watch any longer, grabbing him with one hand, “What are you hiding for!”

Zhao XiaoLan was as startled like a rabbit from the sudden movement, “It said in 《The Noble Gentleman Way》! When going out at night you shouldn’t just walk around right out in the open, you’ve got to avoid the opponent!”

Ming ChangYan pointed a finger forward and back, “The spot you picked doesn’t have anybody around for a hundred meters, it’s so desolate there aren’t even birds, where’d these opponents of yours come from?”

Zhao XiaoLan blushed, mumbling, “I, I’m just worried, is all.”

Ming ChangYan patted his back, “Stand up straight and walk properly.”

At his chiding, Zhao XiaoLan dejectedly replied, “Okay…”

After they’d walked for around an hour, leaving the brightly-lit Daming Hall far behind them, the Ninety-Ninth Temple slowly began to emerge before their eyes.

This palace was situated in the loneliest corner of the Imperial City; surrounded by overgrowth, the towering palace seemed so tall as to reach the clouds, so high one might feel like they were flying if you climbed to the top. Facing the palace, Zhao XiaoLan was overcome with a poetic urge, and standing with his legs apart, posed as he recited, “On a dangerous house a hundred feet high, my hand reaches out to grab the stars. I do not dare to raise my voice, fearing I will frighten the heavenly beings.”

Ming ChangYan pulled his arm, “Alright XiaoLan, no more reciting. The Ninety-Ninth Temple is so high, where are we supposed to enter it from?”

Zhao XiaoLan motioned with his hands, “I came here before when I was little, follow me!”

Ming ChangYan said, “Don’t go too fast, I can’t see the road.”

Surrounded on all sides by pitch-black darkness, Ming ChangYan’s eyes hurt, his head swelled, and he walked in twists and turns. After coming to the Imperial Palace, he’d been going through tremendous personal torment, afflicted with countless ailments, like now: As soon as night fell, his eyesight suffered a devastating decline.

Zhao XiaoLan quickly pulled a night pearl from his shirt, shocking Ming ChangYan as he said, “We can use this to light the way.”

Ming ChangYan: “That’s such a big pearl, XiaoLan-xiong, you sure are rich.”

Zhao XiaoLan looked embarrassed, “It’s not that I’m rich, this was a present from my elder sister.”

Ming ChangYan had heard Zhao XiaoLan’s history before – his paternal aunt was the empress, plus he was the son of the first wife of the head of the influential Zhao family, so his social status was naturally out of the ordinary. But it was rare to find a person born in such an illustrious position who still managed to be so pure and innocent; Ming-shaoxia truly admired that.

As the two crossed through the courtyard, both dressed head-to-toe in black, Ming ChangYan said, “Why aren’t there any guards around here?”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “The Ninety-Ninth Temple has never had guards. Huai Yu-gege’s the only one who lives here. He had them when he was little though, layers and layers of them – they’d always turn me away when I came to play with him.”

Ming ChangYan was astonished, “When he was little? So he’s been in the Imperial Palace since he was a kid?”

Zhao XiaoLan, “When I first met him, he was already living in the palace. He rarely came down, just spending all day by himself. So Aunty Empress often told me and A-Jun to come keep Huai Yu ge-ge company. A-Jun thought this place was too boring, so she only came a few times and then gave up and ran off to the academy to find Teacher Liu instead. But I don’t think the academy is very fun, either.”

Ming ChangYan mentally froze, blurting out, “Isn’t this basically just imprisonment?”

Zhao XiaoLan cautiously continued forward, “I wouldn’t say it counts as imprisonment. Minister Chang and I can go in and see him, and Huai Yu ge-ge gets to come out and play every new year too. He’s got a cold attitude though, so he can’t really manage to play with us.”

Zhao XiaoLan had a simple mind, obviously unable to handle the high-level difficulty that was thinking and walking at the same time; he stopped moving, considering for a moment before he said, “Minister Chang returned to the palace when Huai Yu ge-ge was eight years old. Afterwards, the minister stayed to teach him through all his studies, and after that, Huai Yu ge-ge became the Young Prime Minister.”

Ming ChangYan said, “What’re you stopping for, move faster.”

Zhao XiaoLan promptly ran ahead a few steps, leading Ming ChangYan to remind him again, “Ai, wait a minute, don’t be so loud, be careful carrying that night pearl. Oh forget it, the light’s too bright, bring it over here.”

Zhao XiaoLan handed the night pearl over to him, and Ming ChangYan tore a piece of material off his clothes to cover the light. The two nervously and furtively ran up the stairs, and just as Ming ChangYan’s legs were beginning to lose sensation from all the climbing, Zhao XiaoLan quietly spoke, “We’re here, this is Huai Yu ge-ge’s bedroom.”

Ming ChangYan thought to himself: This little brat really is supernatural, it took almost an hour just to get up the stairs!

Zhao XiaoLan lowered his voice to ask, “Where does Huai Yu ge-ge put his waist pendant?”

Ming ChangYan thought for a moment before replying, “It should probably be in the inner room. You stay here, I’ll go in to look.”

As he softly and quietly pushed open the door, Ming ChangYan’s senses were assaulted by that subtle fragrance he’d been smelling on and off since he came to the palace.

Ming ChangYan tiptoed around the extremely sparsely-decorated room, dodging and hiding as he went; soon after, upon the spotlessly clean desk, there suddenly appeared a well-defined pair of hands. This pair of hands groped about the desk for a moment, failed to find the waist pendant, then skirted the edge of the desk until they reached the tea table.

Zhao XiaoLan bent down, shuffle-crawling over to Ming ChangYan’s side, and used the quietest whisper he could manage, “Yan jie-jie, have you found it yet?”

There wasn’t a sliver of light in the area. Zhao XiaoLan, worried the light from the night pearl would give away their location, had decided to add another piece of black cloth over it and wrap it up tight. Because of this, Ming ChangYan could only rely on touch as he searched for the waist pendant.

“Nope, let’s split up to search. Give me the night pearl, I can’t see a thing without it.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Yan jie-jie, are you blind?”

Ming ChangYan’s hands groped about until they found his face, and before Zhao XiaoLan could react, flicked his forehead as hard as he could.

Zhao XiaoLan almost cried out in pain, but Ming ChangYan said in a quiet and deadly-serious voice, “No yelling!”

Zhao XiaoLan could only cover his mouth, tearfully nodding his head. Ming ChangYan then took the night pearl and snuck over to the west side of the bedroom.

Suddenly, someone put a hand on his waist. Ming ChangYan at the moment was concentrated entirely on searching for that waist pendant, and quietly said, “Didn’t I tell you to go search the south side, what’re you running to my side for?”

The other didn’t reply, so Ming ChangYan went on carelessly rummaging through everything, sighing aloud, “The brat’s not half bad at hiding things.”

He rummaged a little too hurriedly, and the night pearl – which hadn’t been placed carefully enough when he shoved it in his bosom – rolled out onto the floor, letting out an astonishingly loud noise. Ming ChangYan’s heart skipped a beat as he hurriedly and awkwardly crawled over to grab it. Who would have imagined that at this moment, he’d trip over the bookshelf next to him, shaking it hard enough that the books all fell onto his head; immediately following, the bookshelf became unable to support itself, and fell over with a loud bang.

Ming ChangYan mentally shouted a single line: Heaven strike me down!

In his rush to get out of the way, he grabbed the person behind him and rolled to the side, stopping once they’d rolled three times: Ming ShaoXia had sprained his ankle.

No matter, ever since he climbed out of the YanBo River if he didn’t have a hundred ailments head to toe he had at least eighty, so getting a sprained ankle was just adding flowers to the brocade. He let out a sigh of relief, then hurriedly turned his head to ask, “Did you get hurt anywhere?”

Ming ChangYan was currently blind as a bat, and totally unaware of the situation. Although his eyes were opened quite wide, the only thing he could see was pitch-black darkness.

Still, he said, “He’s got to have woken up after all that noise, we should get out while we can.”

Ming ChangYan thought yearningly of that priceless night pearl, and decided to try searching for it before he left. Unexpectedly, just as he was about to do so, ‘Zhao XiaoLan’ suddenly reached out and pulled off his shoe.

Ming ChangYan said, “Ssss – what’d you pull my shoe off for, ow, don’t touch it, is it broken, it really hurts.”

‘Zhao XiaoLan’ didn’t say a word, ice-cold hands touching his ankle and quietly pressing on it. Ming ChangYan’s legs were perfectly straight, his feet elegantly attractive with a full instep, his skin pale enough for the veins beneath to be visible. Consequently, the red swelling on his ankle looked particularly frightening.

Ming ChangYan felt around in the darkness, and touched upon the corner of a square box. There was a complicated decorative design on the box, and as he felt his way onwards, a hidden snap button jumped into his hand. Ming ChangYan was quietly surprised, energetically feeling around some more. No good, better pull the whole box into his lap to search it.

He couldn’t see well, but his actions were still quite serious. As long as the object was a precious one, Ming ShaoXia, who is used to being destitute and dejected, could pretty much always feel it out. This sandalwood box, regardless of whether it was the decoration or the material, was all top quality. What could be stored inside such a nice box as this?

His heartbeat sped up uncontrollably. Fu Ling’s words suddenly leaped up in his head: The Young Prime Minister was always given precedence in choosing rare and priceless herbs given as tribute from foreign lands.

Who was the Young Prime Minister? Huai Yu. Where would he put the herbs he picked? In the Ninety-Ninth Temple! Moreover, if you didn’t keep such a treasured object as the Immortal Grass in an even more treasured box, what could possibly suit that high-quality herb! What would a treasured box look like? Regardless of whether it was the fine wood quality, or the fancy decoration, or the number of snap buttons, or the heavy weight, it had to be the box in his hands, no doubt about it.

Ming ChangYan gulped, forgetting even the pain of his injured foot, and hurried to open the button. The sandalwood box opened with a snap, and inside was a little dried herb lying quietly on a layer of silk. Ming ChangYan only touched it for a second, then closed the box again, inwardly coming to a conclusion: This had to be the Immortal Grass!

Having now gotten his hands on the Immortal Grass, Ming ChangYan temporarily pushed all thoughts of waist pendant and clothes to the back of his mind, saying, “Xiaolan, let’s get out of here, we can come back tomorrow night-”

He hadn’t finished speaking when Zhao XiaoLan’s voice suddenly came from the west side of the room: “Yan jie-jie, how’re you making so much noise over there? Good thing I just found out there’s nobody in Huai Yu ge-ge’s bed, or else we’d definitely have woken him up by now.”

Hearing that, Ming ChangYan froze in terror!

If Zhao XiaoLan was over there, then-then who was the person grabbing his ankle!

Zhao XiaoLan called out, “Yan jie-jie? Are you listening to me? I’m coming over!”

Ming ChangYan immediately used both hands and legs in tandem to stuff the box into his bosom while frantically crawling backwards. Unluckily, when that bookshelf fell and the two had gotten pressed together, Ming ChangYan’s hair was trapped under the other person’s hand. His moving tugged his hair, leading to Ming ShaoXia letting out a long whine, “Ssss-it hurts!”

Zhao XiaoLan pulled another night pearl from out of his shirt, and in an instant, a large portion of the room was lit up.

Now, having finished yelling in pain, Ming ChangYan subconsciously fell back down, just in time to smash into the head of the person under him. With the two of them knocking their heads together so enthusiastically, Ming ChangYan let out a brief shriek, putting his hands over his head as he rolled over to the side.

“It hurts!”

Zhao XiaoLan was so scared that a shiver went through him from head to toe, as he guiltily called out, “Huai Yu ge-ge….”

Huai Yu was dressed in white pajamas, a gloomy expression on his face, his complexion not good at all. There was a red mark on his forehead, a contribution from Ming ShaoXia.

At the same time that Ming ChangYan was crying out in pain, his mind was ferociously crying out in sorrow! Entering somebody’s house as a thief, only to get caught red-handed, how was he supposed to get out of this! He snuck a furtive glance at Huai Yu and saw a face as grave as a coffin, the surrounding temperature seeming to have dropped by a startling amount; he’d obviously been woken by the noise, and was very, very angry!

He thought back to Huai Yu’s rich-girl temper of a few years back, both easily annoyed and difficult to please. Ming ShaoXia lamented so hard he could die over the futility of it all, yelling about how his head hurt; aside from the outward hurt, his heart was practically killing him with worry as well.

Zhao XiaoLan said, “Yan jie-jie…”

Ming ChangYan rolled around on the spot, putting all his energy and effort into trying to garner some sympathy, “Oww! My head hurts, my foot hurts…what if my leg’s broken!”

Huai Yu sat quietly for a long time, then finally sucked in a breath, seemingly putting an enormous effort into controlling himself as he asked, “How much does it hurt.”

Ming ChangYan paused a moment, peeked his eyes out from under his hands, and tried to sound well-behaved, “It’s fine, I’ll put some medicine on it when I get back to the palace, Young Prime Minister need not accompany me, I can walk on my own. XiaoLan!”

He stood up, resolutely hopping out on one foot with his disabled body. He hopped a few steps before realizing he’d left his shoe and sock behind him, turning back around to put them on. But as soon as he touched the swollen area, an unbearable pain spread out in all directions from his right foot.

Zhao XiaoLan didn’t dare look at Huai Yu’s face as he volunteered, “Yan jie-jie, I’ll carry you!”

Just then, Huai Yu, who’d been watching from the sidelines, spoke up, “A child and a cripple, are you two planning to crawl your way back?”

Ming ChangYan said in shock: Who the hell’re you calling a cripple?

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 16

DChapter 16: The Small Gentleman – Part 1

Translated by: Ritpoppy

Edited by: Ren

“Huai Yu ge-ge!” Zhao XiaoLan yelled, “Speak of the devil, and he’ll come!”

Ming ChangYan suddenly turned around, raising his head to take a look, Fu Ling and Peony’s bodies were already crouched down in a greeting, “Young Prime Minister.”

Fu Ling lightly tugged on the hem of Ming ChangYan’s sleeves, Ming ChangYan awkwardly laughed as he promptly crouched down, “Good afternoon, good afternoon.”

His posture while crouching was extremely amusing, Zhao XiaoLan laughed, “Yan jie-jie, all the other woman are graceful and delicate when crouching, why do you look like you’re in a horse stance?*”

(TN: “扎马步” This is too funny. https://gss0.baidu.com/9vo3dSag_xI4khGko9WTAnF6hhy/zhidao/pic/item/b7003af33a87e950f4465b7d10385343fbf2b44a.jpg )

Ming ChangYan half-heartedly said, “I have long legs, it’s too inconvenient to crouch down.”

He constantly glimpsed at Huai Yu, but the other party didn’t even spare him a glance, and was instead completely concentrated on the bowl in his hand; Throwing fish food into the pond, his gaze fixated at the carps that were chasing each other around in the pond.

Ming ChangYan suddenly felt that the atmosphere was rather relaxed, and tried finding an excuse to escape, but was dragged back by Zhao XiaoLan.

“Huai Yu ge-ge, meeting you here really was a coincidence! I just ran into a very interesting imperial concubine, she says she wants to meet you, I’m bringing her over!”

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan’s mind was met with great momentum, using the small fan in his hands to smack the hand Zhao XiaoLan was using to pull him and causing Zhao XiaoLan to cry out in pain.

“XiaoLan! Zhao XiaoLan! Let go, let go!”

Zhao XiaoLan this person was exceptionally warmhearted, even though it hurt, he nevertheless endured the pain. Though tens of thousands of trails, he dragged Ming ChangYan in front of Huai Yu.

Ming ChangYan suddenly closed his eyes, praying in his heart: Amitabha, this shaoxia is currently dressed like this, he shouldn’t be able to recognize me.

Compared to the well-regarded Noble Gentleman from two years ago, the current Ming ChangYan’s height has shortened a chunk, but regarding his outward appearance, even his gender has changed. Although this Young Prime Minister had seen his appearance before, it’s already been two years, he should’ve already forgotten it right!? Ming ShaoXia himself wasn’t very skilled in recognizing people’s faces, so he used his own self-evaluation of the human face to convince himself that Huai Yu wasn’t good at recognizing other people’s faces either. After absentmindedly comforting himself, he opened his eyes, imitating Zhao XiaoLan’s tone of voice, showing off his obedience and said, “Hello Huai Yu ge-ge.”

Huai Yu moved the bowl from his left hand to his right.

Hearing this, Zhao XiaoLan said, “Why are you copying me?”

Ming ChangYan said, “How do you call this copying you, we’re of the same generation. If you can call him ge-ge, then why can’t I?”

Zhao XiaoLan thoughtfully nodded his head, lowered his voice and said, “But you sound too childish.”

Ming ChangYan thought: My bad, my bad. I overdid it.

Zhao XiaoLan said again, “Huai Yu ge-ge.”

Ming ChangYan followed suit, “Huai Yu ge-ge!”

The more he called, the more smooth it sounded. He was determined to create a good relationship, so that it would be more convenient for him to roam the imperial palace and find the Immortal Grass. As a result, he might as well just toss his shame away, it didn’t matter if it scared Fu Ling and Peony till their gallbladder breaks, each minding their own business as he walked forward, “Is ge-ge feeding the fish? What kind of fish are you feeding?”

Huai Yu didn’t spare him a look, Ming ChangYan then confirmed that this person didn’t recognize him.

It would be normal if he didn’t recognize him, being able to recognize him would be abnormal! Don’t even mention the fact that he’s been discredited right now, he’s accustomed to being shameless, it didn’t matter to him if he hit rock bottom. If Huai Yu had recognized him, and lifted his skirt in front of everyone to see, and with a single look: ShaoShi is actually a male!

It would be completely preposterous!

He took advantage that Huai Yu wasn’t looking, and sneaked a few more glances at him.

Ming ChangYan happily smiled, “When I see Huai Yu ge-ge, I have this feeling that you’re a friend that I’ve met from a foreign land. I feel like we have a very deep relationship, it may be because Huai Yu ge-ge and I are brought together by fate!”

Zhao XiaoLan squeezed his book and asked Fu Ling, “Is Yan jie-jie always like this? She really doesn’t seem like a woman.”

Fu Ling’s eyes were seeing black, she wished she could just faint and die.

Peony said, “She, ShaoShi is lively and cute in nature, she’s always been so….”

Zhao XiaoLan smiled, “Then that’s very interesting!”

Huai Yu scattered some more fish food, repeating, “Friend that I’ve met from a foreign land?”

Ming ChangYan nodded his head, reaching his hand into the other’s jar and grabbing out some fish food, and scattered the feed into the pond wildly like a woman throwing flowers. With pieces going east and west, it provoked the carp, making them flee around in dismay.

He patted his hands together, extremely curious, “What kind of fish are these, why have I never seen them before?”

Huai Yu indifferently said, “Didn’t you say that you were brought together by fate?”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “Brought together by fate, brought together by fate! I’m brought together by fate by the one above and by the one in the water!”

Huai Yu said, “The fish in the Imperial Golden Pond were gifts from a foreign nation.”

Ming ChangYan said, “With the tone of your voice, it’s like you can speak to the fish. Huai Yu ge-ge has really outstanding strong points.” He asked before thinking the matter though, “What are these fish saying to you?”

Huai Yu was calm as he paused for a while, before saying, “It’s raining outside so why aren’t you heading back home?”

Ming ChangYan was dazed, he reached his hand out, catching small droplets of rain as they collided with his palm. He glanced at Huai Yu in astonishment, thinking: Is it possible that this person really is a god?

Zhao XiaoLan said, “There’s a pavilion on the side, let’s go in to avoid the rain!”

Entering the pavilion, just as they sat down, two people emerged from the rain. The two individuals were tall and lofty, dignified and solemn; Upon seeing this, Fu Ling and Peony immediately saluted, “Eldest Prince, Third Prince!”

Zhao XiaoLan cupped his hands together, “Eldest Cousin, Third Cousin.”

Fu Ling softly reminded Ming ChangYan, “ShaoShi, quickly make your salutations!”

Ming ChangYan was stunned for a moment and while he was saluting, the Eldest Prince didn’t pay attention to him at all. He replied to Huai Yu, and nodded his head at Zhao XiaoLan, before sitting on the stone stool with a hard to understand expression.

The Third Prince stood beside him as he soothed, “Huang-xiong*, restrain your grief and accept fate.”

(TN: “皇兄”; Xiong means older brother or a term of address you would use to someone who’s close to you. Huang is just what they addressed to people in the Imperial family, but it can also be used as a surname. They’re using Huang because saying there real name was forbidden and considered taboo.)

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, any repost of this is stolen and if steal our work, I’m going to go feral on you.

The Eldest Prince, “I know. I…Young Prime Minister, the hauntings within the palace, are they really by Ming ChangYan?”

Ming ChangYan interjected, “How could it have been him!”

The Eldest Prince turned his head around, Ming ChangYan stared at his face, after looking at it from left to right, he concluded that he didn’t have any memories of this face. Two years ago in the YanBo River, this person lead troops to come purge him. Ming ShaoXia looked at him and thought that he wasn’t pleasing to the eye, yet he unexpectedly changed his tone, promptly saying, “Yes! How could it not be him!”

The Eldest Prince said, “What palace are you from?”

Ming ChangYan waved his hands around, “You don’t need to know about that. There are so many people dying in the palace, and there are those that haven’t died, yet they seem to only be killing people related to you. If I say that you don’t have any enemies, would you believe me?”

He continued to scare them with frightening words, “The Wang ShaoShi that shared a courtyard with me saw it with her own eyes, Ming ChangYan’s ghost hanging in midair, formidable-looking and with an imposing aura.”

The Eldest Prince was subjected to the emperor’s influence, his superstition on ghosts was even greater than the emperor himself. He unnaturally changed his position, even neglecting the fact that Ming ChangYan wasn’t following proper conduct, directly asking, “Ming ChangYan has already died, his corpse which was salvaged out of the river looking like a steamed bun, so how could his ghost look formidable-looking? Could it be that your friend saw wrong?”

Ming ChangYan drank a cup of tea, and impartially corrected, “Well then he’d be a formidable-looking steamed bun! Even when being a steamed bun, the Noble Gentleman is still very handsome and distinguished. Let’s not talk about this, Eldest Prince, don’t tell me you don’t know how the people in the palace died?”

The Eldest Prince weakly said, “Needles…”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “Yup, needles! May I ask, with the palace under such strict precautions, besides ghosts, who could enter freely without obstructions? Who would be able to enter through restricted areas without anyone stopping them?”

The Eldest Prince’s expressions swayed, looking towards Huai Yu, “Young Prime Minister, what do you say?”

Huai Yu let out an earnest sigh, “Her words are rational.”

Ming ChangYan inclined his head to the side, secretly looking at Huai Yu; His heart was somewhat nervous, one moment he thinks the other party recognized him, and the next he thinks the other hasn’t recognized him. He was kind of depressed, the splitting image of a young maiden in love. He followed after Huai Yu and let out a sigh, sentimentally looking at the other party, but at this moment, Huai Yu was also looking in his direction.

Ming ChangYan, who had drunk some water, immediately coughed it back up. Fu Ling instantly stepped forward to help him wipe his chest, but Ming ChangYan refused, carelessly wiping it off himself, his heart was gloomy: Does he really not recognize me?

If he recognized him, Ming ShaoXia thought it would be embarrassing.

If he didn’t recognize him, Ming ShaoXia felt a bit sullen: This shaoxia is so good-looking, but you forgot me in just two years, that’s really hateful. To think that back then, I even saved him, if it was switched to a woman…

While he was letting his imagination run wild, the Eldest Prince finally couldn’t sit still any longer, he stood and circled the pavilion a few times, “Then wouldn’t the next one he looks for be me?!” He suddenly turned around, looking at Huai Yu, he pleaded, “Young Prime Minister, you must save me!”

The Third Prince said, “Huang-xiong, no need for you to be so nervous. It’s because Father is worried for you that he summoned you to the palace, the forbidden areas in the imperial palace are guarded by the 13 Guardians, and you also have the Young Prime Minister here, so you can be at ease.”

Ming ChangYan laughed out loud, “Yes! Rest assured, the 13 Guardians were unwittingly a bit careless, accidentally letting 3 people die, I’m sure they’re normally very on guard and will defend one’s property till death! At most, if we’re not careful enough, a few more people will die, but the imperial palace already has so many people, even if they die in one round it wouldn’t necessarily be brought upon your head.”

Hearing this, the Eldest Prince looked a bit angry, “Enough, enough, they’ve already arrived.”

At this moment, the rain stopped.

Huai Yu stood up to take his leave, the Eldest Prince bid him goodbye.

Ming ChangYan looked at him leave without wading in the mud and water, even the Eldest Prince has to give him some face, his heart couldn’t help but sob. Two years ago, when he came back from Tokhara, he had thought that Huai Yu had already left. Who knew he was living in TianQing even more ease than him. Only after asking did he find out that Ming Yue and YuLou had fought again, and the two rolled down the mountains, both of them breaking one of their legs. Huai Yu stayed behind to treat their injuries, delaying his time till he returned.

After that, he and Huai Yu were on good terms with each other, apart from how the other party would tend to display his small temper. Excluding his conceited disposition, he didn’t have any other faults. He didn’t think too much at that time, but now it seemed like having him stay at TianQing was a waste of his talents, he didn’t expect for him to be like a fish back in it’s waters in the imperial palace.

Naturally, he would be more indifferent and cold. Ming ShaoXia was drinking tea, saw that Huai Yu didn’t even turn his head around, and began to groan and reminisce about the little brat that used to follow behind him. Sure enough, when a man grows up, no one would recognize them even after changing their face, Ming ShaoXia sighed: Nobody in this entire world except for his wife would be able to bear this little ancestor’s temperament!

Just as the Eldest Prince found his way out, the imperial bodyguard beside him wittily said, “Master, I say that this is actually a blessing in disguise. Although there are rumors springing up from everywhere in the palace, it might not necessarily be someone who’s trying to deceive us. The emperor specifically assigned you to the Eastern Palace, the Eastern Palace has always been where the crown prince dwells…”

The Third Prince also said, “Huang-xiong don’t think too much, even if Ming ChangYan’s vengeful ghost is haunting the imperial palace, if you could kill him once, then don’t tell me that you can’t kill him a second time!”

After a few more flattering and fawning, the Eldest Prince’s heart was much more at ease and, for a moment, he felt that he could kill ghosts.

Within the pavilion, Ming ChangYan stood up and was about to leave as well, and just as he took two steps forward, he was stopped by Zhao XiaoLan’s yell, “Yan jie-jie!”

Ming ChangYan’s footsteps came to a halt, looking at him. Zhao XiaoLan stepped forwards, his smile dazzling, scratching his head he said, “Yan jie-jie, didn’t you say you were going to teach me martial arts.”

Ming ChangYan suddenly realized, “Ah, I just remembered. You want to learn how to use needles? Unfortunately, you’ve only completed one of my conditions. I wanted to see the Young Prime Minister, now that I’ve seen him, there’s only one more left.”

He said, “Egret Academy.”

Zhao XiaoLan, “It’s not hard to bring you to Egret Academy, it’s just that we’re on a holiday right now, even if we go there’d be nothing good to look at. Furthermore, the flowers have already scattered, the trees bare, it’s quite ugly.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Sigh, those words are wrong. I’m not going there to look at the flowers, I’m going there to look at the people.”

Zhao XiaoLan said, “The people aren’t that good to look at either! All the good-looking people are in the Depths of the Flowers, the academy is full of a few bossy and indulged woman with sly temperaments; always making fun of me. If I go now, I’ll definitely meet A-Jun, she always uses me as a way to amuse herself.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Don’t you have a very powerful friend, tell him to hit her back!”

Zhao XiaoLan, “A-Jun is a princess, how can I hit women? Ming ShaoXia has said it before, gentlemen must not punch other women.” He took out《The Noble Gentleman Way》from his bosom, “It’s written on page 32 of《The Noble Gentleman Way》, look.”

Ming ChangYan didn’t even look as he said, “He’s already dead, what are you abiding by his words for!”

Zhao XiaoLan fumed, “As long as the Common People’s Order hasn’t been pulled out by anyone yet, even if he’s dead he’s still number 1 in the entire world! I don’t like hearing the words that Yan jie-jie just said.”

Ming ChangYan could only half-heartedly say, “Okay, okay, okay, I didn’t say he was bad, Ming ChangYan’s the best, the most handsome! Alright, XiaoLan-xiong, if you bring me to Egret Academy, I’ll teach you some of the TianQing six sword techniques!”

Zhao XiaoLan’s eyes glimmered, raising his voice, “Okay! It’s a deal!”

He rolled up the book, facing Ming ChangYan and said, “With your appearance, you wouldn’t be able to enter Egret Academy.”

Ming ChangYan lifted the edges of his skirt, “How? These clothes are so expensive, don’t tell me I still can’t get in?”

Zhao XiaoLan shook his head, “That’s not it, if you’re dressed like this, how are you supposed to leave the Imperial Palace. At night, I’ll bring you a set of men’s clothes, disguise yourself as a man, and then leave the palace together with me!”

Ming ChangYan paused for a moment, before he suddenly burst into loud laughter, laughing till he was out of breath. He took Zhao XiaoLan’s shoulder and said, “Okay, okay, okay, I’ll disguise myself as a man!”

Zhao XiaoLan didn’t know what he was laughing for, but he followed his actions and began laughing as well, continuing, “There’s another thing, entering or exiting the imperial palace requires a passing token. But this passing token is something that you and I are unable to get out hands on.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Does my little friend XiaoLan have any other methods?”

Zhao XiaoLan mysteriously beckoned him over, Ming ChangYan approached his ear as he whispered, “Yes. Besides the passing token that allows anyone to enter and exit the imperial palace as they please, there’s also a person who’s able to freely enter and exit the palace as they please. As long as we get a hold of the pendant that hangs by his waist, we won’t have to worry about people not letting us out!”

Ming ChangYan shared a look with him as the two said in unison:

“Huai Yu!”

“Huai Yu ge-ge!”

The two looked at each other with a gaze filled with profound mystery, after consideration, they decided to go to the Ninety-Ninth Temple – to steal.

Zhao XiaoLan thought of a plan for him, telling Ming ChangYan that after stealing the pendant by Huai Yu’s waist, he should steal his clothes along with it, so that he could disguise himself as the Young Prime Minister and leave the palace. This method, after Ming ShaoXia dressed up in woman’s clothes, was the second most clever rotten idea that he’s ever got.

Chapter 15: A Noble Gentleman – Part 7

Translated by: Kestrel

XiaoHe Market, GuiLin Inn.

Ming ChangYan had been softly and quietly placed on the bed. Huai Yu sat at his bedside, taking the opportunity to press on his right wrist; after a moment, he gave his verdict, “He’s been poisoned.”

Yan YuNan and the others turned pale–but before any of them could speak, Ming ChangYan suddenly sat up in bed, “I’m poisoned!?”

Everyone jumped up in fright.

Ming ChangYan promptly rolled up his sleeve, checking the wound, “I was wondering why it was hurting more and more, I can’t believe they actually put poison on that dart.”

Zhong YuLou was speechless for a moment, before he said in an aggrieved voice, “Da shi-xiong, I thought you were unconscious…”

Ming ChangYan said, “I was tricking them!”

Zhong YuLou said, “You had me scared to death.”

Earlier, when Ming ChangYan suddenly fell on the ground, out cold, everyone at the scene went into great disarray as TianQing drew their swords for a fight. The person from Mimi Valley who used poison darts was frightened out of his wits, not daring to believe that he could have actually injured the Noble Gentleman. Wan QianQiu tried to mediate with both sides, though it was incredibly difficult to properly conduct himself when trapped in the middle. The Zhaoyao House shaoxia knew that Ming ChangYan had great ambition but a nasty, naughty personality, and loved more than anything to tease the courageous fighters of the martial circles; with how much stock he put in his pride, there was no way he’d let everyone here get away with putting him at a disadvantage like this.

The Zhaoyao House shaoxia promptly yelled out, “Whose concealed weapon was that!”

The others were luckily quick-witted, immediately evading responsibility as they answered, “Mimi Valley’s!”

The Zhaoyao House shaoxia scolded, “You have the cheek to ignore what’s right or wrong and actually hurt Ming ShaoXia! Unbelievable! Mimi Valley, you guys better give a good explanation for this!”

Everyone from Mimi Valley knew perfectly well that the Noble Gentleman was not to be trifled with; immediately a few pairs of eyes turned to look at the dart-user. The Immortal Miracle Doctor thought to himself: Sorry, if anyone’s going to take a beating, the alternative is the whole sect gets taken apart. DongQi Temple just happened to use needles like the Noble Gentleman, and he totally wrecked their place. He’s clearly the kind of person who’d get revenge just for you looking at him wrong, not a nice guy at all. You’ll just have to take one for the team, brother!

He turned his head, and felt obliged to yell out, “Who said you were allowed to attack him! You deserve a beating! Brothers, Mimi Valley will take care of its own sect, and beat him!”

Not until they’d beat up the helpless disciple, did Zhong YuLou and the others sheathe their swords. Wan QianQiu managed to calm everyone down after some careful meditation, and led them to XiaoHe Market.

Ming ChangYan had purposely taken the hit from that dart in order to calm down the chaos at the scene, but hadn’t expected the dart to be coated with poison. He straightened up, turning his head to speak to Huai Yu, “I was injured, and got poisoned too.”

In the blink of an eye, he’d dumped it all on his head, and was trying to make him take responsibility.

Huai Yu said, “You ran into it on your own.”

Ming Changyan, “Where’s your conscience, brat, do you know who I got hurt for!”

Huai Yu stood up, sat himself down at the table, pulled out brush and paper and wrote out a prescription, which he handed over to Yan YuNan, “Get the ingredients on this list, and have him drink the medicine once it’s done boiling.”

Yan YuNan looked over at Ming ChangYan, who waved a hand at him, “Go on.”

Huai Yu folded his arms and leaned against the window. The window was open and faced XiaoHe Market.

XiaoHe Market had gained its name from being situated by a famously run-down river. And GuiLin Inn was the most famous restaurant in XiaoHe Market. Below it one could see crystalline water, horses, carts, and boats all moving back and forth, making for a very lively scene.

Ming ChangYan asked, “How are Wan ShaoXia and the others?”

Zhong YuLou was resting his chin on both hands, listening to a storyteller weaving stories downstairs, and took the time to say, “They’re all resting downstairs. Wan ShaoXia said once Da shi-xiong is awake to go find him. I don’t want to look for him, they’re all super annoying.”

Just then, a knock sounded at the door.

“Honored guest, would you be interested in hearing the national daily news!”

Hua YuLing slid off his stool, “I do, I do!”

He opened the door, and a man dressed like a Confucian scholar pulled a newspaper from his book basket. Hua Yuling paid him two copper coins, closed the door, and said as he looked over the paper, “The whole thing at BanPo Village only happened yesterday, and it’s already in today’s news. Egret Academy sure gets their news fast, even LingLong Pavilion can’t keep up.”

Huai Yu poured a cup of tea, saying, “Egret Academy is a government-controlled intelligence network, their financial and physical resources aren’t anything a common school can hope to reach.”

Ming Changyan half-leaned against the bedside, lazily saying, “What does it say, read it out loud for me.”

Hua YuLing flipped through it front-to-back, then said, “There’s nothing important, they just exaggerated what happened at BanPo Village by a little bit. The writer was Lord Qin Yue, he always loves writing exaggerated stuff like this. Last time he wrote that thing about heartless playboy Tong XiaoYu making private transactions and getting chased for many miles by an angry LingLong Pavilion. How come he still hasn’t fixed that bad behavior of his?”

Ming ChangYan burst into loud laughter, accidentally pulling his injury, and sucked in his breath with a hiss.

Hua YuLing said, “Another massacre happened over in YinZhou – the number of dead isn’t as many as the last few incidents this time around, but how they died is scary as ever.”

Yan YuNan said, “Is it still like that, where everyone was killed with needles? There’s a lot of people in the country who use needles, but there’s only so many who use them well. The methods they used for these massacres were really merciless. They might also use needles, but their tricks aren’t like Da shi-xiong’s…but that difference is so small that nobody can tell.”

Hua YuLing pointed at the paper, “Look, they mentioned TianQing Sect again.”

Ming ChangYan could tell what was written on that paper without even needing to look. Ever since he’d taken control of the Common People’s Order, TianQing Sect’s reputation had taken a serious and devastating dive. During that time, more and more massacres emerged that used needles like him, clearly aiming to place the blame on his shoulders. He didn’t want to be the sucker getting taken advantage of here, but there were always people who refused to let him off easy. Everyone lusted after the Common People’s Order, there was no way he could hold it in his hands and still maintain his personal integrity.

Yan YuNan grabbed the newspaper, quickly folded it up, and shoved it into his sleeve, “I’ll throw it out later.”

Ming ChangYan said, “Do you care that much? Us upright men don’t fear gossip. As for what’s on the paper, aside from the national paper, is LingLong Pavilion’s paper out yet?”

Hua YuLing said, “I didn’t see any scholars selling LingLong’s on the road.”

Ming ChangYan said, “If Xiu LingLong found out about this incident, it’d probably have spread all over the country by now. Once YuNan comes back, have him write a note to pass to her.”

Zhong YuLou said, “Why do we need to write to her?”

Ming Changyan said, “I’ve got my own plans, children shouldn’t ask too many questions.”

Zhong YuLou wasn’t angry at having gotten brushed off so easily, continuing to listen with rapt attention to the storyteller in the lobby. Hearing the strike of a magistrate’s block, Ming ChangYan turned his head and noticed that Huai Yu was also listening very seriously.

The person telling stories in GuiLin Inn was Lin’an’s widely renowned ‘Poison Mouth’ Old Qin. This man had a sharp personality, a penetrating voice, an absolutely beautiful way with words, the tales he told all endlessly interesting. He was incredibly down-to-earth when telling his stories, not bothering to speak like some pedantic scholar, and in fact, had a vocabulary overflowing with obscenities. His performances were enjoyed by scholars and lay-people alike and were beloved by the common people.

The story he was telling now, was that of HuaTing county’s Zhuang family massacre of eight years before.

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, and repost of this is stolen work and if you steal my work, I’m going to make you drink bitter medicine.

Ming ChangYan said, “HuaYing’s Zhuang family? Is that one of the three big influential families? How come I’ve never heard of them?”

Hua YuLing liked reading about other places, so when he heard Ming ChangYan speak up, was quick to answer, “The Zhuang family disappeared years ago. Da shi-xiong, back then you hadn’t come to the central plains yet, there used to be four big families. The Zhuang family was pretty famous back then, but in the end, they were burned clean away. Now the only ones left are Lin’an’s Zhao clan, YingTian prefecture’s Qin clan, and CangWu’s Liu clan.”

Old Qin pinched his beard, his mouth emulating the burning sounds of a huge fire, his detailed depiction almost seeming to bring the scene to life; the vividness of it made his listeners’ hair stand on end, as if they themselves had been placed at the scene of the fire, unable to run away. He said, “…The great fire burned for a day and a night. After it died out, HuaTing’s government office sent around a hundred men to go collect bodies from within the house. They found a total of one hundred and forty-one people: close family, distant relatives, anyone with a name and surname, all had died in the conflagration. Except for one!”

Zhong YuLou was totally engrossed in the story, and leaned out the window to yell, “Who was it! Were there still survivors!”

Old Qin said, “Survivors? None. This person wasn’t really alive and wasn’t really dead either. They disappeared!”

Cold air seemed to blow across the audience, all of them thinking: Did they turn into a ghost?

Zhong YuLou repeated, “Disappeared? How’d they disappear? Don’t tell me they burned so hard there wasn’t anything left!”

Having just reached the climax of his story, Old Qin paused a moment, then cupped his hands and said, “If you want to know what happens next – please listen in next time for the resolution!”

Just then, Yan YuNan pushed open the door, having returned with the medicine.

Zhong YuLou automatically volunteered to go boil it, and asked GuiLin Inn to let him borrow a small back garden. As he headed down the stairs, the boys of Mimi Valley came looking for Ming ChangYan’s room, handed him an antidote, and gave him an apology.

Ming ChangYan quickly put on his hat, as Wan QianQiu entered and said, “Young Master Changyan, are you feeling any better?”

Ming ChangYan said, “Perfectly fine, I’m still alive and kicking!”

Mimi Valley’s Immortal Miracle Doctor finished apologizing on behalf of his sect, and having done with the proper etiquette requirements, promptly began diplomacy measures.

“Ming ShaoXia, please don’t blame our Mimi Valley for being suspicious in that incident. The Gou family guards did in fact die to needles, and when it comes to using needles, none but the Noble Gentleman have reached the pinnacle of skill. I heard your young TianQing sect friends say that the second head of the Gou bodyguards is resting at your esteemed school; if possible I would like Ming ShaoXia to lead us to TianQing sect, so that we may speak to him in person and better resolve this misunderstanding.”

Ming ChangYan said with a laugh: “Why should I take you to TianQing sect, and why should I bother explaining myself to you?”

These words were obviously showing off, and arrogant to an extreme degree – but unluckily for them, he actually had the ability to back it up. The Immortal Miracle Doctor’s expression changed as he tightly gripped his sword.

Wan QianQiu said, “Don’t be rash, fighter Cui; though Young Master Changyan and I have not known each other for long, I have great faith in his moral standing. I swear on my life that Young Master Changyan would never do such an insane and vile crime as this.”

The Immortal Miracle Doctor said, “I never said it was him!”

The Mimi Valley members behind him began to whisper, “All we want is to get a confrontation with that second family head and it’ll prove his innocence, but he refuses to let the guy go – he’s gotta be hiding something!”

“If the second family head really is at TianQing sect, all he has to do is bring him out. What’s he acting guilty about it for?”

Wan QianQiu was unsure how to continue, “This is…”

Suddenly, Huai Yu’s figure moved, catching a carrier pigeon at the window. This carrier pigeon had a bow sloppily tied to its leg, just as if it had come from Ming ShaoXia’s hand. Sure enough, Yan YuNan said, “It’s Little Eight!”

Huai Yu let go of the pigeon, and with a shaky flap of its wings it flew over to crash into Yan YuNan’s embrace. It could be assumed that TianQing had been quite generous in its care of Little Eight; it had a round belly and fat body, its color glossy and smooth. Yan YuNan pulled the note from the pigeon’s leg, his face paling slightly as he read it.

He looked over at Ming ChangYan, who waved a hand, “I’m tired, so I’m going to sleep. Everybody out.”

The Mimi Valley people didn’t dare insist on staying, and after sharing dismayed looks with each other, resignedly left the room.

Yan YuNan gave Huai Yu a look as well, but Ming ChangYan simply said, “What does the letter say?”

Yan YuNan said, “The second head of the Gou family guards is dead.”

Ming ChangYan starred in surprise, “He died?”

Yan YuYan nodded, “Er shi-xiong called Lady Hua over to look at him. As soon as she left Small Pavillion Terrace, the second head died. The letter says he died from excessive blood loss.”

Ming ChangYan said, “He sure picked a great time to die.”

Yan YuNan was at a loss for ideas, worriedly looking at Ming ChangYan, “Da shi-xiong, what are you gonna do?”

Ming ShaoXia fell back on the bed, staring upwards, “What do you mean what am I gonna do, I’m gonna take my medicine of course! Your Da shi-xiong is dizzy and light-headed right now, I don’t have the tiniest bit of energy in my body, I’m nearing the end, I’m clinging to my deathbed, I’m about to die!”

At that, Yan YuYan hurriedly rushed downstairs to see if YuLou was done boiling the medicine yet, and before long was carrying in a bowl of pitch-black medicinal soup.

Ming ChangYan’s poisoning wasn’t serious, and he’d eaten Mimi Valley’s antidote earlier, so the truth was he was already mostly recovered by this point. Just as he was about to reach for the medicine, he caught a glimpse of Huai Yu standing by the window with a cold expression on his face, and was struck with sudden troublemaking inspiration.

“Ouch, my hand hurts.”

Yan YuNan nervously said: “Da shi-xiong, I’ll feed you!”

Ming ShaoXia winked at Yan YuNan, who stared blankly as he listened to his Da shi-xiong go on in a plaintive and sorrowful voice, “What a thankless little wretch, I got this injury for nothing, getting put in a state like this, I’ve lost strength in my hands, there’s no strength in my body, and somebody doesn’t even know to thank this shaoxia, or put a little hard work into showing some hospitality.”

Huai Yu said, “Are you talking to me?”

Ming ShaoXia gave a crafty smile, “I am in fact talking to you. Come over here, I can’t eat this medicine, so I’m reluctantly giving you a chance to repay me.”

Huai Yu didn’t move.

The more he didn’t move, the more annoying Ming ChangYan became, straightforwardly lying on his back and beginning to howl, “You’ve got no conscience! No principles! This shaoxia hero saved a beauty and fell to a state like this, and yet somebody’s being cold-blooded and heartless, ignoring me, not willing to even feed me medicine!”

As he yelled, he also watched Huai Yu with a silly smile on his face.

Huai Yu suddenly moved, walking directly towards the bed. Ming ShaoXia had gone overboard with the jokes, and frightenedly scooted backwards half an inch.

Taking the bitter medicine from Yan YuNan’s hands, Huai Yu sat at the bedside, scooped up a spoonful, and held it out towards Ming ChangYan, “Open your mouth.”

Ming ShaoXia was the spitting image of a gecko, backing up six or seven steps in succession, sticking himself to the wall, entirely lacking that dissolute countenance from before; he dully said, “I was just joking with you.”

Huai Yu’s smile didn’t reach his eyes, “I wasn’t joking with you.”

Ming ChangYan had absolutely never imagined: the other person would actually come feed him.

Now, he didn’t dare complain that his hand hurt or his head was spinning. He grabbed the bowl, downed the medicine in one gulp, wiped off his mouth, and hurriedly changed the subject, “YuNan, do you have anything sweet, the medicine’s bitter.”

Yan YuNan took back the empty medicine bowl, then pulled a red bean mooncake from his shirt, “When I was coming upstairs earlier, I saw they were selling mooncakes on the second floor, so I bought a few.”

Ming ChangYan took a bite, “It’s almost the Mid-Autumn festival.”

Yan YuNan asked: “Da shi-xiong, are you still not spending Mid-Autumn with us this year?”

Ming ChangYan paused a moment, then smiled, “Wait another year.”

Just then, YuLou and YuLing entered the room; as soon as they heard his words, they knew that Ming ChangYan was going home again.

Ming ChangYan wasn’t a native of the central plains; having first come at the age of fifteen, he’d gone around fighting and touring simultaneously, and somehow came out famous for it. Afterwards, he’d been given an invitation from the chief of the TianQing sect, entered the Great Homage Feast, and made the Common People’s Order recognize another master after tens of years without, thus making his name known throughout the country.

He took over TianQing Sect for a number of years, usually never leaving XiYue Mountain; it was only every Mid-Autumn Festival that he always, without fail, disappeared for two months. Once he’d eaten the mooncake, Wan QianQiu came up to discuss things with all the sects, and after repeatedly vowing on Ming ChangYan’s behalf, the people of Mimi Valley – for the sake of saving Wan Qianqiu a bit of face – promised not to bother Ming ChangYan anymore, for the time being.

Before the party returned to TianQing, Ming ChangYan expressed his thanks to Wan QianQiu by arranging for the TianQing and GuiFeng sects to train together at XiYue Mountain in four months’ time. TianQing’s Six Sword techniques were world-famous, so being given the chance to learn it made Wan QianQiu happy beyond words; he immediately expressed utmost thanks on behalf of GuiFeng Sect.

On XiYue Mountain, all the TianQing disciples were reluctant to part. This bunch of half-grown children clung to Ming ChangYan every year, asking him all sorts of questions, and this year was no exception.

YuBao loved acting like a spoiled child; having calculated that there was only a month ‘til Mid-Autumn, and known in his heart that Ming ChangYan was going to leave on a journey, he at once started loudly crying, “Da shi-xiong, don’t go!”

Ming ChangYan flicked his forehead, “I’ll be back in two months.”

Zhong YuLou said, “Da shi-xiong, who do you go to visit every year anyway?”

Ming ChangYan said, “My family.”

Yubao said, “Why don’t you bring your family to TianQing Sect?”

Ming ChangYan laughed as he answered, “I told you already, wait another year.”

LiMin-Jun packed him some simple luggage; he shouldered his pack, not staying a single day extra, drank a bowl of tea and left. Before he left, he gave notice to Huai Yu, telling him he could stay or go as he liked.

If you followed the road east from the central plains, traveling a month without rest, you’d be able to see the vast ocean. Looking from here, the moon was both huge and magnificently round, its image reflected on the water, almost as if this moon had risen up from within the sea itself; this sea was therefore called FuYue* Sea.

(TN: “浮月”; floating moon)

On the shores of FuYue lay a tiny country situated between the mountains and the sea; this country was called Tokhara, and was Ming ChangYan’s homeland.

Chapter 14: A Noble Gentleman – Part 6

Translated by the wonderful Kestrel

The head shaoxia was around 5’6”, in white clothes and a feathered hat, thick brows nearly vertical as he yelled, “Alright! So you guys were the culprits, huh!”

Yan YuNan stood up, pulling YuLou and YuLing behind him, and whispered, “They’re guys from Zhaoyao House and a few other sects – you two don’t move, stand behind me.”

Ming ChangYan straightened his body; the moment the Zhaoyao House’s shaoxia saw his bamboo hat and black veil, his look changed drastically, and he jumped backwards as quickly as he could, “I-it’s the Noble Gentleman!”

“The Noble Gentleman? Ming ChangYan? He’s here too?”

“The dead were all killed with needles, do you think he did it?”

“No way, what would he kill people for, have you lost your mind!”

“If you ask me, these guards were probably purged by the ‘Rain Column’!”

“You’re just trying to scare us!”

“How do you know that?”

“Going as far as using old legends for your stories, there’s something wrong with you! There’s never been a so-called ‘Rain Column’ among the three troops. You’re just spreading lies!”

“Who can really say, what if Ming ChangYan is the ‘Rain Column’…”

The aforementioned Three Columns were troops within the army directly subordinate to the Central Plains’ Imperial Court, called the Mountain Column, Fire Column, and Earth Column. They and the Thirteen Guardians each did their own separate duties, two separate squadrons protecting the imperial family in darkness and in light, carrying out secret missions, etc.

As for the ‘Rain Column’, it was a famous legend: an organization used by the imperial family to intimidate martial circles around the country.

It was difficult to use official law to judge homicides among martial circles in the Central Plains, meaning it was nearly impossible to handle murder and arson cases…and so the legend of the Rain Column came to be. If a martial sect overstepped their bounds, willfully slaughtering the innocent, they’d be purged immediately. When the ‘Rain Column’ purged a sect, it was often accompanied by pouring rain; killing people in the rain, leaving not a trace of their arrival, was also how the Rain Column had got their name. As long as you were targeted by the Rain Column, your only future was total extermination – there had never been any survivors. People’s opinions around the country were therefore widely divided, and no sect dared to overstep their bounds. In the end, whether or not the Rain Column really existed was a mystery that no one had ever solved.

In other words, if the Rain Column really existed, then they were bound to be exceedingly powerful, above all martial arts in the land; otherwise they wouldn’t be able to so effortlessly exterminate sect after sect the way they did. Someone with that level of power—who bragged the most about having it? The answer was obvious.

The Zhaoyao House shaoxia let out a forced laugh, cupping his fist in his hand, “A misunderstanding, we hadn’t realized you were friends from Tianqing Sect.”

Ming ChangYan offhandedly cupped his hands, counting that as having returned the greeting.

“What a rude guy! Just look at how he’s acting towards us!”

“Ai, it’s not like you don’t know what he’s like; if you’ve got the skills then let’s see you try being number one in the country.”

“If you ask me, he might actually be the one who did it. Who else in the country’s this good at using needles?”

“Alright alright, stop arguing!”

A lot of whispers, fearing Ming ChangYan might be hearing-impaired, were spoken incomparably loudly.

Ming ChangYan moved, his hand pressing lightly on the Common People’s Order; at once, there was absolute silence.

Hua YuLing jumped out, saying, “What’re you putting all the blame on us for, everyone just got here, for all we know maybe you’re the murderers!”

Seeing that his shi-xiong had started talking, Zhong YuLou promptly put away his hostility, put a truce on their little conflict, and joined him in facing the enemy, “The big influential sects sure are unreasonable! Showering people in insults the moment you show up, you think I can’t insult you back!”

Yan YuNan warned them, “Don’t say any more, you’re making things difficult for Da shi-xiong.”

The two boys indignantly shut their mouths.

TianQing Sect had gained fame too quickly, taken too much of the limelight, and had an unsteady foundation, leading to them being ostracized by the older and more experienced sects. Usually most people around the country were incredibly resentful of TianQing, believing the sect was overly indolent and unrestrained. Of course, they were particularly resentful of Ming ChangYan Ming ShaoXia. But because he had the Common People’s Order in his hands, the martial circles couldn’t actively show their dissatisfaction towards him, instead gossiping behind his back and secretly sharing their loathing of TianQing. Ming ChangYan had never shown the least concern for such little things as this, which made it seem as if TianQing was easy to bully.

It wasn’t the first time a scene like today’s had occurred.

Zhaoyao House’s shaoxia spoke a few words, Ming ChangYan didn’t answer, and the atmosphere immediately froze.

“Young Master ChangYan.”

Another man stepped out from within the crowd. This time, when Ming Changyan saw him, he actually gave a proper greeting, “Wan ShaoXia.”

This was Guifeng Sect’s first disciple, Wan QianQiu; his relationship with Ming Changyan was generally rather good, and in recent years, his sect was the only one willing to work closely with TianQing Sect. Wan QianQiu had a gentle and honest personality, straightforward and upright in his actions, and was the esteemed model example of a shaoxia among the martial circles, making a distinct contrast to Ming ShaoXia’s wanton and unrestrained way of behavior.

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, any repost of this is stolen and if you steal our work I’m going to drown you in the Yanbo River

Wan QianQiu said, “Now isn’t the time to talk about the past. Everyone, though Young Master Changyan may be skilled with the needle, the needles he has used have never once been left on the bodies of the deceased. Moreover, the needles on the Gou bodyguards are silver needles, not moondrop needles.”

Someone spoke up, “Who knows what kind of needles he uses? Besides, if you want to kill someone, why would you use your usual needles!”

Wan QianQiu smiled, “And who are you, good friend?”

The ‘good friend’ introduced himself, “I’m Mimi Valley’s Immortal Miracle Doctor, Cui ChengSheng!”

Wan QianQiu awkwardly thought for a moment, probably never having heard of any Mimi Valley or Immortal Miracle Doctor, yet still felt obliged to save the other’s face, forcing himself to say, “So you’re the Immortal Miracle Doctor – I’ve looked forward to meeting you.”

Unexpectedly, Huai Yu very rudely laughed aloud.

The Immortal Miracle Doctor said, “What are you laughing at!”

Huai Yu was matchlessly proud in appearance, sharp as wind and graceful as jade, and whose relationship with Ming ChangYan surely wasn’t shallow based on how closely they stood together; no one dared to overlook him.

“Why do you care about what I’m laughing at.”

The Immortal Miracle Doctor knew he was laughing at him, and so couldn’t suppress his anger, sticking out his neck as he said, “So what if I care!”

Huai Yu had been playing with a hair tie; he twisted it a few times around his forefinger, and was about to speak when Zhong YuLou spoke up instead, “Usually it’s wives who worry about their men, what’s a big guy like you being so sensitive for!”

He suddenly thought back over what he’d just said, remembering the tiny bit of news he’d heard from his fellow TianQing disciples the day before, and angrily blurted out, “Even Da shi-xiong hasn’t–mph! Mmmph!!”

Yan YuNan covered his mouth, laughing nervously, “Household matters, don’t mind him.”

Ming ChangYan’s body went rigid, having realized where the little blockhead’s thoughts had gone, and said, “I did in fact come here from XiYue Mountain to investigate the mass murder of the Gou bodyguards; has Wan ShaoXia heard of The King of Hell Adorned in Wedding Dress before?”

Wan QianQiu’s face changed slightly, “…I have.”

Ming ChangYan said, “That is who killed the Gou family guards.”

The Immortal Miracle Doctor said, “Nonsense, these people were stabbed to death with needles! Ming ChangYan, do you have no shame!”

Ming ChangYan was getting tired of this guy, but he couldn’t just go ahead and beat him up in front of all these people, and therefore had to continue enduring it. He answered, “They were poisoned to death.”

Huai Yu pulled a needle straight from Ming ChangYan’s shirt, and used it to prick a corpse’s philtrum and all ten of his figers. Sure enough, unpleasant-smelling, dirty black blood flowed out from within.

As everyone covered their noses and backed away, Huai Yu said, “Constricted pupils, purple lips and tongue, swelling and putrefaction of the limbs—they’ve been afflicted with Buddha-Hand Red Lady.”

Wan QianQiu spoke up, “I’ve heard of this poison before; those afflicted with it will have their hands swell up like a well-rounded Buddha’s hand, which is how it got the name.”

The Immortal Miracle Doctor’s face turned bright red as he noisily argued, “Of course I know he was poisoned! The needles must have been coated in poison!”

Huai Yu indifferently said, “The poison was on the strings.”

The Immortal Miracle Doctor seemed almost to stop breathing, the anger caught in his throat as he continued furiously speaking, “Bullshit! I don’t see any strings here!”

Ming ChangYan whispered, “This guy’s really annoying, somebody shut him up.”

Huai Yu lifted his hand, tore a few pieces off a small flat cake he’d bought earlier, poured his internal energy into them, and threw them into the Immortal Miracle Doctor’s mouth.

His mouth suddenly stuffed full of cake, the Immortal Miracle Doctor became greatly agitated, thinking he must have swallowed some sort of secret deadly weapon; he swallowed it without thinking, his face deathly pale, “You despicable creature! To think you’d actually use concealed weapons, and ones that….actually it tastes pretty good.”

After he swallowed it, he froze for a moment, belatedly realizing what he’d just said, and immediately felt regretful enough to slam his head against the ground.

Having met with humiliation of this level, everyone from Mimi Valley turned to Wan QianQiu and complained in unison: TianQing Sect is bullying people!

Ming ChangYan drew back their attention with an earnest, “I have something to day – he isn’t part of our TianQing Sect.”

There was no way Mimi Valley would believe him, and they all clamored for Wan QianQiu to take charge and demand an explanation.

The Immortal Miracle Doctor was currently in a fit of anger; seeing how arrogant Ming ChangYan was being, and not caring that the man before him was the best fighter in the land, he let out a bellow of rage, grabbed a pair of iron hooked chains and, spinning them around with formidable might, came charging straight forward.

Against a jack-of-all-trades like him, Ming Changyan simply pulled a single needle from his bosom, sending it flying out before the man could retaliate; he’d yet to reach Ming ShaoXia when he collapsed to the ground, violently spitting out a mouthful of blood.

The Immortal Miracle Doctor wasn’t the only one here from Mimi Valley, and seeing that Ming ChangYan had moved first, it was unreasonable for them to simply watch their fellow disciple come under attack; they promptly rose up to join the fray, surrounding Ming ChangYan from all sides.

Before Wan QianQiu could recover from his shock, Ming ChangYan had already exchanged seven or eight blows with the Mimi Valley fighters.

With every needle he threw out, another person kneeled. Ming ChangYan threw eight needles in total, and immediately Mimi Valley was laid out sprawling all over the ground.

The Immortal Miracle Doctor still had a strong will despite his disabled body; despite being unable to move due to the needle, he still had the strength to curse loudly, “Ming ChangYan!! You’re bullying people just because you’re great at martial arts! You bastard son of a bitch, you shameless skunk!”

Wan QianQiu put a hand to his forehead, then hurried to drag everyone apart, “If you have something to say then say it properly, gentlemen use their mouths, not their fists. Let’s first resolve the issue of The King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress before handling any personal grievances.”

The Immortal Miracle Doctor had suffered great losses, and refused to back down even an inch, “No! I won’t stand you speaking for him either, Wan QianQiu! Anyone with eyes can see how Ming ChangYan treats us, this isn’t just a matter of one or two days. Don’t tell me you don’t know how many chivalrous fighters in the martial circles have been humiliated by this guy! I want to right wrongs in accordance with Heaven’s decree, today!”

The scene immediately exploded into chaos.

Some unknown person from within the crowd shot a hidden dart towards Huai Yu while his guard was down. Ming ChangYan moved sideways to strike it down, but unexpectedly this flying dart was a revolving one; it turned around and came flying right back at them.

The scene at this moment was really in extreme disorder; Ming ChangYan had never anticipated a situation like this, and the dart cut open his skin, drawing blood.

The three from TianQing Sect all drew their swords in unison, pointing them straight at the people of Mimi Valley.

Wan QianQiu had no choice but to stand alone against the three, hurriedly saying, “A misunderstanding! This is a misunderstanding!”

Yan YuNan said, “Mimi Valley was first to provoke us, and now they’ve injured my Da shi-xiong, there’s no way I can forgive them that easily!”

YuLou and YuLing rested their swords on Wan QianQiu’s shoulders, putting in a tiny bit of force as they closed in on his neck.

Ming ChangYan said, “Ai, what are you doing, all of you put those swords away.”

Huai Yu pinched his arm with a frown. Ming ChangYan said, “It’s just a scratch.”

As the three indignantly sheathed their swords, Wan QianQiu said, “Young Master ChangYan, this incident today…”

Ming ChangYan said, “I don’t have the time to bother with looking into these guys. The second head of the Gou family guards is currently recuperating at TianQing; we asked him for details the moment he recovered. The King Of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress affair was originally none of my business, but now that their second head has come to our TianQing Sect, I’m going to have to start caring.”

Wan QianQiu let out a sigh of relief at that, “Of course, nothing would be better than to have Young Master ChangYan be willing to help us. I’ve already secured lodging at GuiLin Inn over at XiaoHe Market, if Young Master ChangYan and the others would come with me.”

Zhong YuLou jogged over to Ming ChangYan’s side, “Da shi-xiong, your wound isn’t serious, is it?”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “If you took too long to call the doctor, the wound would probably be healed before he even got here.”

He casually grabbed the other half of the cake from Huai Yu, “Let me have some, I’m starving.”

At the news that it was a small injury, Zhong YuLou patted his chest, breathed a sigh of relief, then tilted his head and asked Huai Yu, “Huai Yu ge-ge, what was that hidden weapon you used earlier, that was really cool!”

Huai Yu pointed at the cake in Ming ChangYan’s hands.

Ming ChangYan was happily eating away as he thoughtlessly asked, “When did you buy this anyway, what’s it called, it strangely tastes really good?”

Huai Yu slowly and deliberately said, “Wife cake.” He paused, then asked again, “Didn’t you say you weren’t afraid of people seeing what you look like? Don’t tell me you’re afraid after all.”

His mouth was full of cake crumbs; when he heard this question again, his expression turned somewhat dull, his hands suddenly seeming to be grasping a thousand-catty weights.

Yan YuNan and the others turned to him with a strange look in their eyes.

Ming ChangYan absent-mindedly took a step forward, not answering a word, and fell flat on the ground with a thump.

Chapter 13: A Noble Gentleman – Part 5

Ming ChangYan lowered his teacup and once again cursed LiMin-Jun eight hundred times in his head. It was obvious that because he was the other’s elder that he went forth and took advantage that he had just met Huai Yu to make fun of himself. Now that the younger generation is learning from their elders, he was afraid that the little guys will now follow the other’s examples.

Ming ChangYan could only explain, “I was just playing around with your Huai Yu ge-ge.” When he finished, he gave LiMin-Jun a threatening gaze.

On the way from the pavilion terrace to the Jeweled Canopy, Huai Yu once again regained that cold and indifferent expression. Ming ChangYan didn’t react much to this scene, but he found it as an excuse to ask, “Ai, did you get angry? What’s wrong?”

Huai Yu continued to wear that stiff face, pretending that he heard nothing.

Ming ChangYan this person was the least afraid of people giving him an austere expression, he had a thick face, if one sentence wasn’t enough, he’d say another sentence.

“Was my way of welcoming you not to your standards? What are you walking so fast for, it’s still raining! Hey!” He softly cursed: This little brat!

Huai Yu stopped as he harshly replied, “You seem to be very confident about your cultivation skills. When I leave TianQing sect, I’m going to reveal your appearance to the public.”

Ming ChangYan cheerfully smiled and supported an umbrella for him, “I’ve already said, this ShaoXia isn’t afraid of this. I’m beautiful, why should I be scared of people seeing me!”

Huai Yu grunted, Ming ChangYan said, “Don’t be angry, why is it that no matter how much I coax you, you never seem to be happy?”

Huai Yu heard this, his face once again looking displeased, replying, “I’m not a child, don’t coax me like you would with a child.”

Ming ChangYan paused for a second before erupting into loud laughter, “You’re upset about this? What’s there to be angry about, from the looks of it, you’re only 17, no more than two years older than YuNan. Why can’t I coax you?”

Huai Yu answered, “You’re also only a few years older than me, what are you doing pretending to be my elder.”

He paused for a moment, his voice muffled as he emphasized, “I’m almost 19.”

Ming ChangYan twirled his umbrella around, the raindrops around the two spread apart to form a small circle. His brows and eyes were curved as he laughed, “You were born good-looking, I like you, I think that you and I were brought together by fate. I just coaxed you, if someone else asked me to coax them, I wouldn’t even answer!”

Ming ChangYan’s form of “like”, refers to the general sense of being fond of someone. He never bothers with formality when speaking, his words dissolute and unruly. Unfortunately, it startled Huai Yu, his foot slipping, nearly causing him to fall down.

Ming ChangYan quickly helped support him, “Do you not look below your feet when walking?”

Huai Yu paused for a second, replying, “You, you…”

He thought for a while but didn’t know how to answer, so he shut his mouth, unwilling to say too much.

Ming ChangYan thought that his young boy’s temper was so cute that he couldn’t help but tease him a few more times, causing the receiving party to become ashamed and angry at the same time.

“You shut up! If you say another word, I’m going to kill you.”

Ming ChangYan placed his hands on his chest like he was scared for his life, “Wow, I’m so scared.” He smiled, “What? You said so earlier yourself, you’re my man. Now that I want to get closer to you, you suddenly say you want to kill me, I feel so wronged!”

His manner of speech when talking to Huai Yu was comparable to when he would tease little children. Huai Yu was restless after being provoked by him, suddenly grabbing the other’s hand, pulling him closer to his face.

Ming ChangYan leaped up and jumped down, his teasing and provoking courting disaster, it was almost impossible to prevent. His face was suddenly closely met with another face, their breaths sticking together, only a hairsbreadth apart, the two lips almost meeting.

Ming ShaoXia’s eyes widened, his mind suddenly becoming blank.

Huai Yu saw that he’d suffered defeat, his heart was pleased with itself. He raised the corners of his lips and said, “Just so-so, humph.”

He loosened his grip as he took the umbrella away from Ming ChangYan’s hands, and began to walk down the mountain and towards the Jeweled Canopy. Ming ChangYan was soaked from the rainwater, he abruptly turned around, the sound of his beating heart filled the sky, he promptly yelled, “Hey! That’s my umbrella! I’m drenched in the rain!”

Hearing this, Huai Yu slowed down his steps, allowing Ming ShaoXia to catch up to him, squeezing himself under the umbrella.

___

At dawn the next day, Yan YuNan kicked open the door, saying, “Da shi-xiong, the guy woke up!”

Ming ChangYan sat up from his bed, put on his clothes, and walked to the small pavilion terrace.

Just as they entered the room, the man on the bed began to frantically try to escape, even wanting to kneel on the floor for him. LiMin-Jun supported him up, saying, “Don’t move, your wounds are reopening, don’t kneel don’t kneel! No one wants you to kneel!”

The man let out two coughs, shedding tears as he cried out, “The Gou family is looking for Ming ChangYan, Ming ShaoXia!”

Ming ChangYan took a step forward, asking, “What are you looking for Ming ChangYan for?”

The man wiped off some of the blood on his face, his voice quivering uncontrollably as he continued, “I’m the second head of the Gou family guards , three days ago I was making a trip from RunZhou to Lin’an with some goods, but as we passed by ZhouShan, we met, met, met…”

He seemed to be extremely afraid, even after tying his words together ten times, he still wasn’t able to properly get the words out of his mouth.

Ming ChangYan patiently stated, “Who did you meet? No need to rush, you’re already under TianQing sect’s doors, you have me, ah, you have Ming ChangYan here. Who in the heavens would dare to even touch a single hair on you.”

The second head of the Gou family guards covered in blood unconsciously shook a bit, swallowing down some of his saliva, “King of Hell…a feast created by the King of Hell!” His eyes were bloodshot, almost seeming as if he was about to pass out, “It, it was that King of Hell, the wedding dress! The King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress!”

LiMin-Jun held up a bowl of medicine, he and Ming ChangYan casted glances at each other.

He said, “The Joyful King of Hell?”

Ming ChangYan nodded his head, reciting, “‘The King of Hell holds a feast, in the gates of Hell, none along the Yellow Springs turns their head to take a look.’”

Yan YuNan asked, “Er shi-xiong, what’s ‘The King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress?’”

LiMin-Jun set down his bowl, replying, “The Joyful King of Hell is The King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress. They’re a strange person who’s withdrawn themselves from worldly affairs two years ago in Jianghu.”

Yan YuNan questioned, “In what way were they strange?”

Ming ChangYan said, “They’re strange because even though they’re dressed in wedding garments, they commit horrible crimes like wiping out a person’s entire family.”

LiMin-Jung said, “This King of Hell Adorned in a Wedding Dress doesn’t appear often. They often cause mischief on forest trails along the mountains, before the person even arrives, you’ll be able to hear their voice, followed by the joyful beat of the drums and cheerful music of the dead. Along the path, two figures would appear, one in a crimson wedding dress, the other draped in mourning clothes. The red dress would roll around on the ground, while the white dress would flutter in the wind. Paper money would fly across the sky like silk, as a palanquin and a coffin were seated side by side to one another. It’s an extremely unusual sight to behold, and had a very eerie aura to it.”

Huai Yu stated, “Merging weddings and funerals together is an extremely wretched, sorrowful, and terrible thing to do.”

Yan YuNan’s body trembled.

LiMin-Jun continued, “This strange person frequently waits for the troops at the border of the mountain tops while holding onto a guqin. If they want you to die at midnight, then you won’t even be able to live till 5:00 pm. As a result, they earned the title of The King of Hell. Every single sect that have come across them, none returned alive, the entire group wiped out. Consequently, whenever they commit homicide, it’s called the King of Hell’s Feast. If the King of Hell invited you to have a meal, wouldn’t it be the same as being gone forever and never returning!”

Yan YuNan asked, “But they’re standing on the mountain tops, how would they kill people?”

LiMin-Jun, “Who knows? Currently, no one’s ever made it back, you’ll have to ask him.”

Everyone’s eyes fell on the man seated on the bed.

The second head of the Gou family guards, who had just finished drinking the medicine to ease his nerves, was startled by the gazes, and could only slowly say, “I don’t know how they kill people…”

Ming ChangYan was silent for a moment.

The second head of the Gou family guards seemed to have suddenly remembered something, elliptically shouting, “It was with paper dolls! I remembered…they used paper dolls to kill my fellow apprentices! They’re a demon, a monster! They used the paper dolls to take away everyone’s lives!!”

The man became erratic, his mouth leaving behind traces of saliva, “It’s the King of Hell…it’s the King of Hell…they aren’t human! Only monsters have the ability to make paper dolls move!!”

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, any repost of this is stolen and if you steal my work, I’m going to hunt you down with my paper dolls.

LiMin-Jun saw that the situation wasn’t good, reaching his hand out at once to jab at the pit of the guy’s stomach, the man’s strength was suddenly removed from his body as he passed out on the bed.

LiMin-Jun, “I saw that his words were getting obscure, so he might as well just stop talking. The accident occurred 1000 meters from the Brook Market, at BanPo village. It’s right here, I think we’d better find a few people to check it out just to be sure.”

Ming ChangYan didn’t listen to him, he stroked his chin as he asked, “What kind of cultivation has the ability to make paper dolls move? Have you guys heard of it?”

LiMin-Jun chuckled, “Ming ChangYan, you should kill this intention of yours. You’d even want to learn these sorts of dishonest practices when there are so many cultivation techniques in this world. It can’t be that you want to know them all?”

Ming ChangYan replied in an inevitable fashion, “If you’re able to learn it, then learn it. Otherwise, how would I be the number one in the world?”

LiMin-Jun picked up the bamboo hat draped over with a black veil from the table and threw it at Ming ChangYan’s chest, “Yes, yes, yes, number one in the world, go to BanPo Village and check how many people have died.”

Yan YuNan immediately grabbed his sword, raising his hand and said, “Da shi-xiong! I’ll come with you!”

The Zhong YuLou and Hua YuLing that had been eavesdropping by the doorway for a long time simultaneously began to squeeze themselves into the room.

“I want to go too!”

“I want to go too!”

Hearing this, Zhong YuLou widened his eyes, “Why are you mimicking my words!”

Hua YuLing let out a world-shaking humph, patting his clothes as he said, “You have no sense of shame, who would want to mimic you?!”

Ming ChangYan put on the bamboo hat while walking out of the room, “Your legs aren’t attached to my body, it’s not like I can stop you guys from coming along.”

After hearing this, everyone was in high spirits as they followed behind.

As LiMin-Jun saw that Ming ChangYan had grown a new strip of small tails following him around, he couldn’t help but smile, thinking: He just loves to pamper these little things.

The Brook Market was located on Lin’an’s northern side, three of its sides are surrounded by water, while the last side is leaned against the mountain. The market was chaotic and unusually lively.

As soon as they arrived, he brought everyone a tanghulu, blocking up the little children’s chattering mouths. When he wanted to hand Huai Yu one, Huai Yu had his hands on his arms, his head leaning to the side, “I’m not eating, I’m not the same as them.”

Ming ChangYan cheerfully said, “Yes, yes, yes, you’re not the same, you’re more beautiful. Alright, quickly eat, when you’re finished, we have to hurry on.”

Huai Yu paused, took the tanghulu and sniffed it a few times before immediately coming to a conclusion, “Distasteful.”

Ming ChangYan, “You didn’t even eat it yet, let me try it!”

He tilted his head and took a bite, leaving only half of it on the bamboo stick. Ming ChangYan chewed it for a while before he swallowed and said, “It’s very good, it’s just that you’re too picky.”

Huai Yu held the tanghulu and walked a few steps forwards. Ming ChangYan was still teasing and having fun with Zhong YuLou, never getting tired of it. His heart wavered for a short period of time, and in the end ate the remaining half of the tanghulu, coming to the conclusion that: Not only was distasteful, it stuck to his teeth.

As he finished eating the tanghulu, they had already arrived at BanPo Village.

They haven’t even stepped into the village gate when they picked up a heavy odor of blood coming from within the village. Zhong YuLou pinched his nose, his voice muffled as he said, “Da shi-xiong, this place is so disgusting.”

As they moved forwards, below the remains of half the hill in BanPo Village was a mountain of dead bodies. All the people were freshly killed, but because runoff caused by the storm yesterday, blood and it’s plasma were mixed together, condensing together to form clots of blood. A lot of the bodies were washed away farther away. Every three steps, Ming ChangYan would run into a corpse, this whole scene was really like a hell on Earth.

Yan YuNan used his sword to poke at the corpse’s clothes, Zhong YuLou immediately grabbed onto the other’s sleeve as he cautiously hid behind his body.

YuLing snorted, “Just look at your squeamish state!”

Yan YuNan, “Knock it off,” he turned to Ming ChangYan, “Da shi-xiong, it’s just like the other guy, there’s not a single piece of good flesh on their bodies.”

Ming ChangYan observed his surroundings with rapt attention for a moment when he suddenly pulled out a needle from the body of a male corpse.

At this time, the mood changed unexpectedly. From the surrounding woods, ten people crashed through and unexpectedly appeared.

In this split second, Ming ChangYan laid down the black veil and covered up his face.

A Seductive Gentleman Chapter 12

Chapter 12: A Noble Gentleman – Part 4

Translated by: Ritpoppy

Unedited (cause my sister is being a b*tch)

One day early in the morning, after the Colored Lantern Flower Festival had ended, Huai Yu was awakened by a soft knocking on the window sill.

He hesitated for a moment before walking to the window sill. Just as he was about to open the window a single branch of peach blossoms was thrust in front of his eyes. Behind the blossom was an attractive and charming face. Ming ChangYan smilingly looked at him, “The peach blossom trees on the mountain had just bloomed, I went to go pick some, the branch even still has some dew drops on it. Come, come, come, stick this in a flower vase.” Pausing for a moment, he reached into his bosom and took out another branch of peach blossoms, handing it to Huai Yu, saying, “I’ll give you another one.”

Haui Yu stared at the peach blossoms pressed against his chest, asking, “What is this?”

“Eh? Aren’t they just the flowers I gave you? But don’t go flaunt that I gave you more than them, or else they’ll start bugging me again.”

After he finished speaking, he turned around and entered into the corridors running in the direction of the bedroom next door. After a short period of time, Huai Yu heard the voice of Zhong YuLou coming from next door.

After Ming ChangYan finished delivering all the flowers one by one, breakfast had already been served. Qin YuBao entered the dining room, and using his dog nose, he declared, “Da shi-xiong made breakfast today!”

Ming ChangYan replied, “If you know then why don’t you come over here and eat?”

When Huai Yu entered, LiMin-Jun was already spreading out his chopsticks. When he raised his head and saw Huai Yu, he turned his head around to wink at Ming ChangYan, “Hey! Ming ShaoXia, your man’s here!”

Huai Yu’s paused his footsteps.

Ming ChangYan scooped up some of the soup and saw that LiMin-Jun still hadn’t let the bet from back then go, his face full of self-righteousness. It was extremely hateful, but he was too lazy to care.

Zhong YuLou and the rest of the inner disciples all rushed in, sat in order, finished their food. Ming ChangYan opened his mouth and said, “Did you guys recite the core teachings I told you to recite yesterday?”

Qin YuBao swayed his legs around and carefreely replied, “Recited!”

Ming ChangYan took out a ruler, saying, “Good, since Mister Zhou isn’t here today, I’ll be inspecting your writing. Everyone go wait for me in the library.”

The distance from the dining area to the library only took about half an incense of time, after everyone arrived, they all began to diligently write from memory. Only Huai Yu had nothing to do, sitting by the sidelines lost in thought. After a quarter of an hour passed, Zhong YuLou halted his writing brush and blew away the remnants of the ink marks. Not soon after he set down his pen, the others had finished their writing as well. Since Zhong YuLou was the most distinguished among the inner disciples, the other disciples all one by one came up to take a look at his test paper.

“YuLou, what does this mean?” asked Yan YuNan who was the oldest and the most earnest among the inner disciples.

Zhong YuLou replied, “I recently found some new sword foundation techniques, I wrote my thoughts about it on the paper! When Da shi-xiong comes, I’m going to show it to him!”

Ming Yue had a stiff expression on his face as he said, “We all learned our sword techniques from TianQing, why should we change it if you tell us to change it?”

Zhong YuLou craned his head to look at him, and inexplicably said, “I never said that I wanted to change the sword techniques, I just said I thought of a better way.”

Ming Yue crossed his arms, sneering, “Do you really think that yours is the better one? Shi-xiong just praised you a few times, yet you have the audacity to alter the sword techniques.”

Zhong YuLou frowned, pushing YuBao aside, and questioned, “First of all, I’ve already told you that I’m not changing the sword techniques. Second of all, Ming Yue, why do you insist on arguing with me?”

Ming Yue raised his voice, “Who wants to argue with you! With your high talent and early start, you think everyone is just beneath you. And now you can alter the sword techniques as you like, in the future, wouldn’t you think that if you want to become the sect leader, you can just become sect leader? All it is, is a new technique, in what way is it so amazing?”

After being stabbed by his words, Zhong YuLou yelled, “You’re right, I’m just so amazing. If it wasn’t me, then do you think it would be you? Shi-xiong hasn’t even said anything yet, so who do you think you are to lecture me?”

Immediately after, he deliberately sized up Ming Yue, smirking, “But…do you even deserve to lecture me?”

Ming Yue was aware that his innate talent isn’t comparable to him. This matter just so happens to be his sore point, at once he retorted, “YOU!”

Yan YuNan saw that things were getting out of hand, he immediately soothed, “Stop arguing, we’re all disciples under the same sect, still considered family.”

Zhong YuLou jumped up and said, “Who’d want to be family with this little two-faced person! Wearing this face as if somebody owes you eighty thousand taels! All you know how to do every day is to just be an eyesore with your assorted way of speaking! I’ve known for a long time that you were out of the sorts!”

Ming Yue’s complexion was deathly pale, his eyes bloodshot as his entire body trembled, cursing, “And what are you supposed to be?!” He suddenly pointed his finger at YuNan, “And you, you’re in it together with him. You think you’re so cool, what right do you have to scold me! You’re nothing but a worthless piece of trash that doesn’t have any face, hiding behind Zhong YuLou to try to reconcile with him! Your talent isn’t even comparable to Qin YuBao. You’re the oldest yet the most useless!”

Zhong YuLou made a threatening expression, adopting a posture that seemed like he was about to begin fighting. Ming Yue coldly unsheathed his sword, “Who’s afraid of who!”

With such a huge commotion, it finally caught the attention of Ming ChangYan. He pulled the two apart, giving each of them ten slaps with a board, inquiring, “Why are you guys fighting?”

Zhong YuLou ferociously wiped his face but didn’t utter a single word. Ming Yue also stood by the side, his head lowered and silent.

Ming ChangYan continued, “Do you see Huai Yu sitting over there moving, he’s the same age as you guys but more well-behaved than any of you.”

Zhong YuLou turned to look at Huai Yu like everyone else, the other party was sitting there watching the conflict transpire in front of him, and hadn’t moved an inch. The TianQing youngsters were all flustered, each one apologizing, “Da shi-xiong, we were wrong.”

Ming Yue hatefully glared at Huai Yu, closed his eyes, and stopped speaking.

After Ming ChangYan finished giving them a whip, he coaxed them a few times and collected the youngster’s papers to examine. When Zhong YuLou saw that he had left, he said, “Such bad luck! I’m going to go down the mountain to walk a lap to dispel my anger!” He turned to face Yan YuNan, “Little shi-xiong, wait for me to bring you something tasty when I come back. Inform Da shi-xiong about this, I’ll be going!”

This was translated by https://poppyscanlations.video.blog/, any other repost of this is stolen work and if you steal my work, I will punish you in the name of the moon.

Yan YuNan responded, “Be careful on the road, remember not to pick up random stuff you find on the road!”

Zhong YuLou had already sprinted out of sight, only his voice could be heard, “I know, don’t worry, I won’t!”

Who knew that as night fell, XianYue Mountain began pouring with rain as Zhong YuLou showed up at TianQing Sect’s doorstep carrying a man dripping with blood.

With the birth of this unseen event, Ming ChangYan set down the teacup in his hand, abruptly ending the conversation he was having with Huai Yu.

Zhong YuLou tried several times to explain, but in the end could only hesitatingly say, “Da shi-xiong…I brought a person back!”

LiMin-Jun arrived from the west room and saw the situation. He blanked out for a while before roaring, “Zhong YuLou! You brat, what the fuck did you pick up this time!”

Zhong YuLou pursed his lips, feeling extremely wronged as he uttered, “I…”

LiMin-Jun pinched his ear and dragged him inside, “Did your mother send you here to TianQing to learn martial arts or for you to collect junk? Eh?! If you’re so good at collect this stuff, then why don’t you go join the Qixi Festival gang? Their entire group is known to gather rubbish. Looking at your level of skill, just by going there once, you could be their leader!”

Zhong YuLou cried, “Er shi-xiong! My ears hurt!”

“It hurts? If I don’t pull on your ear till you learn from your mistakes, then my surname might as well not be Li. Picking up a few rodents here and there would’ve been fine, but now you’re venturing out and picking up humans?!” LiMin-Jun continued to twist his ear as he proceeded to shove Zhong YuLou into the water basin, swearing while he gave him some honey locust.

Ming ChangYan and Huai Yu crouched down, observing the passed out man on the floor.

Huai Yu reached out his hand, landing on his wrist to check the other’s pulse. After contemplating for a while, he said, “Poisoned.”

Ming ChangYan used his fan to poke the other’s clothes, “There’s not a single piece of good flesh on him, his wounds look like he’s been cut by some sort of thread.”

He cast a glance at Huai Yu, abruptly asking, “You’re experienced in the art of healing?”

Huai Yu didn’t answer.

Ming ChangYan continued, “Can he be saved?’

Huai Yu replied, “Yes. If it was someone else, then no.”

This sort of reply meant that this youngster’s ambition was quite high, clearly confident in his skills.

Zhong YuLou washed his hands, popped his head cutely from behind and let out a mischievous giggle, “Da shi-xiong, can he still be saved?”

Ming ChangYan flicked his forehead, “Who allowed you to pick up these kinds of dubious people, what have I told you?”

Zhong YuLou diffidently answered, “TianQing sect is isolated from the other sects, we mustn’t stir up trouble and stay true to one’s duty…”

LiMin-Jun let out a cold snort, Zhong YuLou said, “I, I saw that he was pitiful so I brought him back! It was pouring so hard outside, if I had just ignored him, he definitely would’ve died!”

Ming ChangYan said, “We’ll discuss this matter later. The rainfall today is rather heavy, let’s bring him back to small pavilion terrace first and let Lady Hua give him a medical prescription.” He looked at Huai Yu, “It’s better if you don’t leave tonight, the mountain roads are slippery, I’ll have someone to clean out the Jeweled Canopy.”

On the way to the small pavilion terrace, they ran into the YuMao and YuMi who were coming over to take part in the commotion. The one accompanying the two was Yan YuNan.

Yan YuNan said, “Da sh-xiong, I couldn’t stop them.”

Ming ChangYan said, “I know, these two small ones have never had to worry before. Ming Yue didn’t come, right? If he comes over and starts a fight with YuLou again, I’ll be irritated.”

Yan YuNan replied, “Nope, Ming Yue went to sleep. Da shi-xiong, let me help you carry him, this guy’s covered from head to toe in blood, it’s dirty.”

Ming ChangYan responded, “Forget it, you’re wearing white, if you get it dirty, it’ll be hard to wash out. Give me some peace of mind, I don’t feel like washing your clothes today.”

In the early years, back when TianQing sect was still managed by Ming ChangYan, using the phrase “so poor that they couldn’t even eat a pot of white rice” was already praise. Forget about a pot of rice, they didn’t even have a pot! In addition to this, there were several little mouths that needed to be fed, this really was like a hero trying to solve a problem that would only cost a penny*, making the gentleman worry.

(TN: “一分钱难倒英雄好汉”; I really hate translator notes, but I couldn’t find a good enough description of this. Basically means when someone that’s capable is helpless when facing a small problem and how people can’t do anything without money even if you’re the most powerful person in the world.)

Ming ShaoXia in those years: He was no more than 17 to 18 years of age, but held the duty of being their father figure every day. They lived frugally, robbed the rich to help the poor, carried out assassinations in different sects, and killed all kinds of figures for work. Because he was being dragged down by a family he had to feed, in the daytime he was chivalrous, but at night he was using the needle repair clothing. He could only ever settle for temporary methods but never any fundamental solutions. Only after six years, was he able to raise TianQing sect to become the world’s most powerful sect.

Therefore, the few inner disciples that he had raised since they were small all heavily depended on Ming ChangYan, to the point that without him, they wouldn’t even be able to take a single step forward by themselves.

A group a people walked through the stone steps paved from bluestone slabs, passed through an arched door. Walking down, the arrived at the small pavilion terrace.

The small pavilion terrace was located at the waist of XianYue Mountain, neighboring the West Lake. There were lush hills and clear, transparent waters. It was gracefully tranquil while lotus flowers bejeweled the surface of the lake and a pleasure boat floated on the jade colored waters. The building depended on the mountain to keep it steady. Huai Yu took advantage of the dim lights of night as he gazed at the scenery around him. When he couldn’t see the road ahead of him anymore, Ming ChangYan reached out his hand to pull him along. When his hand suddenly fell into the other’s palm, Huai Yu gave him a blank look. Ming ChangYan said, “When first coming to the small pavilion terrace, a lot of people don’t see the roads on the lake and by the shore, causing them to always fall in.”

Huai Yu was still being pulled by him when he calmly asked, “Why are you pulling on my hand.”

Ming ChangYan smiled, “I’m already pulling, you think I’d hurt you? It’s the middle of the night and not to mention the roads are wet and slippery. If I don’t pull you along, do you think you won’t fall in?”

Ming ChangYan pulled Huai Yu up onto the steps, reaching out to pull Yan YuNan up as well. The latter was used to being taken care of, obviously accustomed to it, his complexion steady.

Huai Yu saw this, twisted the corners of his robe, and let out a soft grunt.

The lights around the small pavilion terrace glistened in the dark as a single boat swayed over. Aboard the boat was a crimson clothed young lady, she smiled delicately, “Lady Hua’s body was feeling unwell today so she has already gone to bed. She instructed me ahead of time that if Ming gong-zi was to pay a visit to the small pavilion terrace, I must not hesitate to bring you in. Everyone, please follow me.”

LiMin-Jun handed the medicine in his hands over to the crimson clothed young lady, “Xiao A-Chai, give this medicine to your Lady Hua, tell her not to just secretly throw it away, it was quite hard to find.”

Xiao A-Chai asked everyone to board the boat, hanging the paper lantern on the bow of the ship, smiling, “Lady Hua does not like to take medicine, Xiao A-Chai thanks ChangYan gong-zi’s hospitality.”

Ming ChangYan asked, “Has she coughed up any blood recently?”

Xiao A-Chai replied, “No blood, she’s just unable to catch her breath. Old problems, nothing to worry about.”

Ming ChangYan sat at the back of the boat, his legs crossed and sticking out, “Her sickness has dragged on for 10 years yet there have been no signs of improvement. When seeing her every two days out of three, she always looks as if she’s about to be parted by death.”

Xiao A-Chai lowered her head and smiled, but didn’t say anything.

Finally arriving at the small pavilion terrace, several servant girls stepped forward and hauled the half-dead man onto a bed. Huai Yu took a step forward, stretching the man’s eyelids open and analyzed the odor on the tip of the guy’s nose.

“Is there a needle?”

Hearing this, Ming ChangYan took some silver needles out from his bosom. Huai Yu took the needles, and on the patient’s philtrum, using his ten fingers, he pinned eleven needles in. After getting punctured, thick, blackened blood oozed out from his flesh like silk, falling onto the floor.

Huai Yu said, “Is there medicine?”

Ming ChangYan pointed to his left, “Go in and take a right, there’s a small medicine cabinet, some commonly used medicines should be in there.”

After he finished mixing up the medicines, Yan YuNan finished feeding the medicine to the wounded man, carefully laying him back down. His expression changed as he bashfully looked towards Ming ChangYan.

The Ming ChangYan who was lost in thought was brought back to reality. He saw Yan YuNan’s expression, who looked like he was trying to make a good impression by showing obeisance, was clearly waiting to be praised. But since his actions were such an ordinary thing, Ming ShaoXia pondered but couldn’t think of anything to praise, so he could only insipidly say, “Good job, good job. YuNan has become more and more earnest.”

When he finished praising Yan YuNan, the YuMao, and YuMi who were in the same room as they gazed up at him with eyes filled with expectation. The two had carried basins of water over a few moments ago and didn’t do any less work. Ming ShaoXia’s head ached, he racked up his brains and said a few words, “You guys did good as well, very good, sensible.”

He turned his head around once more. Ming ChangYan looked at Huai Yu and thought he might as well praise this person as well, “Little Huai Yu also did a good job, so youthful, yet so informed in the art of medicine. In the future, you’d definitely become a very capable person.”

Yan YuNan who was waiting to be praised was very happy. Only Huai Yu, who was just praised by Ming ShaoXia, expression changed, his face taking on a look as cold as ice and frost.

Ming ChangYan was stupefied.

Huai Yu said, “What are you looking at me for, change the water, we still need a few more stitches.”

YuMao was young but very quick-witted. Hearing Huai Yu’s orders, he proceeded to stride off on his short, stubby legs to fetch some water back. He then, together with YuMi, sat cutely on a stool. After Huai Yu completed the last few stitches, YuMao suddenly blinked his eyes like he had just realized something, asking Ming ChangYan, “Da shi-xiong, who is he?”

LiMin-Jun just now remembered, YuMao was homesick for a period of time and had asked his mother to bring him back home to stay for a few days. He had only returned to TianQing just this evening after the Flower Festival had ended, so naturally, he wouldn’t have recognized Huai Yu.

He answered, “Oh, I forgot to introduce him. This is one of your Da shi-xiong’s friends, called Huai Yu. You guys can call him… can just call him ‘ge-ge’”

Huai Yu heard this and suddenly said, “Friend? Aren’t I his man?”

After hearing this, the Ming ChangYan that had been sitting aside drinking tea suddenly sprayed out the tea in mouth and onto the table.
